Film School Rejects: WTF: I’m Offended by ‘The Fatties’!

  • Jay S · 1 year ago
Seriously I hope you are kidding about this otherwise you need to lighten the fuck up if you're gonna bitch about this, then you should retro-actively boycott the Nutty Proffesor movies for christ sake.
  • STLLER4PRES · 10 months ago
i AGREE WITH JAY S! tROPIC THUNDER WAS THE BEST DAMN MOVIE IVE EVER SEEN AND TAKING THE FATTIES OUT SCREWS UP EVERYTHING

No one cares about making fun of fat people. We are just the next step in the Health Gestapo's never ending war to force the country to assimilate to their way of life and thinking. First it was smokers, and now it's fat people, tomorrow it will be someone else, don't think that anyone is immune to people who feel they have a right to tell you how to live your life.
  • tokyomonster · 1 year ago
I see what you did there!!
  • Bill Brasky · 1 year ago
fat people (by that I mean medical definition of 20% over ideal body weight) are the majority ... skinny people are the rare minority anymore
  • white slave jew · 1 year ago
i think its hilarious... fat people need to stop eating fast food. WORK OUT AND EAT BETTER
  • Paul · 1 year ago
wow this article went right over the head of a few people it seems
  • maumau · 1 year ago
GET ON A DIET AND FAST, ITS NOBODYS FAULT YOU ARE A FAT ASS AND DON'T TRY BLAMING A MOVIE FOR MAKING U FEEL BAD FOR ALL THOSE HAMBURGUERS THAT U HAD LAST NIGHT. START COOKING HOME AND EAT LOTS OF VEGETABLES AND I DONT MEAN FRIED VEGETABLES.
  • Kison · 1 year ago
    @white slave jew:

Kudos. It's not that tough to start eating better and becoming more active.
All I got out of that article was cry me a river of lard.
Obesity is mainly only a problem cause lazy Americans don't want to change their lifestyles. Although I guess they could all stay fat, seeing as how they could survive longer once the Zombies take over....then again they'd be just as slow as said Zombies.
  • andy · 1 year ago
I, being a fellow fat person, understand your concern with the trailer but I don't see it as an insult to anyone. I personally have come to terms and very almost literally embraced my 'fat-ness'. I don't see it as a weakness and I don't acknowledge any offense to it so I believe that you shouldn't either. It will relieve you of stress and insecurity.

    cheers.
  • Pam · 1 year ago
Hmm, this is a very interesting article you've got here. But seriously? Whatever.

"Think of what happens when young children see Tropic Thunder… or even the trailer that features this sequence. The message is delivered to them that it’s okay to ridicule anyone who does not fit the appropriate body image set forth by people like Ben Stiller. How long until kids start chanting “Fatties! Fatties! Fatties!” on the playground?"

This movie is rated R. Any child that goes to see it would probably ridicule children unlike themselves anyway, as their parents more than likely will not have sufficiently provided the children with tolerance.

I'm sure this movie is extremely offensive. I'm a black woman, and I think it's off the wall that there's a modern film with a prolific actor of our times in black face. There are many racist references made in films, and rarely are they laughed off.

Regardless- In a society that is more and more concerned with not offending every group, and obesity becoming more and more commonplace. Should we focus on the homes that encourage appropriate behavior via rewards made of cakes, pies and ice cream?

Are we not addressing that being overweight due to overeating is simply an addiction, it's rarely a genetic issue due to not being able to process carbohydrates appropriately? Obesity and depression or other necrosis are often linked very closely, and recovery of the mental disorder often results in weight loss.

There are two roads to each street, and unlike race, cognitive issues, height or religion, weight is a reversible issue just like alcoholism. In short, I have little or no sympathy for this topic, as the Nutty Professor films made the all the same jokes you described. America laughed at these jokes, and no one wrote articles about how it was offensive.

Perhaps this movie made you wake up about how you're being underhandedly ridiculed in films released wide without controversy?
  • Robert Fure · 1 year ago
Just to spell it out - Kevin Carr is being sarcastic. Check the above linked post to see his other thoughts on all this Tropic Thunder hubbub.

    "...a sizable minority..."

    Nice. Subtle, but nice.
  • Kevin · 1 year ago
Well then, I guess his sarcasm was poorly done, wasn't it?

    "People, time to lighten up."

I see what you did there.
  • Nevernude · 1 year ago
Motherf**ker! I am hugely fat offended! I am a fat, retarded black person and all this black comedy movie does is set out to ridicule ME! Im soo retarded pissed off with this article im gonna have to eat a hamburger to reduce my heart rate and stop myself losing any weight from getting so worked up! Motherf**ker!
  • CapKwik · 1 year ago
I think that Kevin Carr did an excellent job in pointing out the UTTER STUPIDITY of the arguements against Tropic Thunder. And all of you that said his arguement is stupid and makes no sense just helped to prove his point. Thank you Mr. Carr and thank you everyone else.

If You Don’t Get the Jokes in ‘Tropic Thunder,’ You Don’t Deserve to Laugh

What in hell? How did people NOT catch the sarcasm in this piece, which happened to be very nicely done. Good one, Kevin! If anything, at least we have confirmation that people hate fat people apparently.
  • Aaron · 1 year ago
I'm new to visiting this site and as opposed to just skimming the post through my google reader i read the whole article. i was pretty surprised you were offended by the trailer.

i'd hate to reiterate it but....does this mean the nutty professor was ok then? i havent seen tropic thunder but please stop taking things so seriously. its a MOVIE. a comedy movie for that matter. please lighten up.
  • kaela · 1 year ago
    this is a joke right?

i kept waiting for the punchline but it never came.

and as for your question about child molestors in a movie: kevin bacon in the woodsman. the father of kaylee in the butterfly effect. every other episode of law and order SVU. patrick wilson in hard candy.

and i honestly can't think of a single one with a fat pedophile in it. so check your facts next time. and its helps your statement if you don't give an example of the opposite and then say that it doesn't count (jackie earle haley)
  • Robert Fure · 1 year ago
I feel like Pruitt Taylor Vince played a fat pedophile several times. And in any historical piece there is always like a fat Roman emperor licking chicken grease off his fingers and touching a young boys face or something.

Also, in Law and Order SVU, its either a Preppy High Powered Lawyer or a Fat Guy with a Beard. 50/50 chances.
  • Ed · 1 year ago

I'm fat and I lovedthe movie. I'm a pathetic mess because I dont lose weight, and I should stop eating like a pig and exercise more. I'm fat. I'm fat. I'm fat. I'm fat. Who's offended? Stop pretending to be offended.

Read this first: http://tinyurl.com/JSModProp. You all need a history lesson in sarcasm.

Then come back here and re-read this article.

Everything wouldn't be so offensive if people would just stop being so easily offended.
  • Cameron A. · 1 year ago
I'm offended that you used this post to shill a website and point out that you liked Tropic Thunder. What happened to hating for hate's sake? Damn kids and their GTube and their YouMail and such.
  • Jeff · 1 year ago
The vast majority of obesity is caused by overeating. You can blame metabolism and genetics all you want, but it just means that you have to discipline your diet and exercise regimen more. It's not fair, but it's doable.

I know; I've been obese for 20 years of my life, but have spent the last 8 years at below average BMI simply by rigorously controlling diet and exercise. Metabolism is changeable.

Obese people should be able to take flak for their lack of discipline and eating habits.
  • Chris · 1 year ago
Wow... the entire point of the frame tale trailers/actor backgrounds was satire against
actual films that exploit these types of cliché/offensive situations. The sarcasm in it was so
strong that I won't believe that it flew over your head... surely this article is just another
    layer of sarcasm?
  • BlackPrincessMelis · 1 year ago
Wow. Most people did NOT get this article.

    ahahaha. Now, THAT's funny.

Man, you sound like a fattie.

Hahaha hilarious, Carr you truely have the sense of humor to appreciate a film like tropic thunder. The rest of you guys, he's just joking in a Hunter S. Thompson style, calm down. No one on here is THAT much up their own ass haha.

Seriously - shut up. It's obvious that he was making fun of the movie Nutty Professor and not fat people who are prone to gas trouble. Jeez. I'm fat. Like, I seriously get winded going up a flight of stairs. I don't give a shit. I thought the trailer was priceless. Get a life. It was a harmless poke at Americana and ridiculous movies that people will actually go pay to see. Yea, obesity runs in my family. I farted. So what? You jealous? If you can't handle being fat. Then lose some weight. If you can, then put on your ratty Big Dog t-shirt and let's go to the kitchen.
  • KW · 1 year ago
If you are gonna write a satirical article, please learn how to use sarcasm so it is apparent.
  • Kyri · 1 year ago
I thought this trailer was the funniest part of the whole movie.

There are a lot of ways you can lose weight (put that piece of pizza down as you read this, dammit!), please don't try to elicit pity when your state is caused by your laziness.

That said, where would we be if we can't learn to laugh at ourselves?
  • jeff · 1 year ago
I looked at your profile and noticed you're fat. So I can see why the sensitivity.
    However, you're retarded.

Me and my roommate, who is overweight, were cracking up at the farting.

I wasn't sitting their thinking, "OH THEIR ALL FAT >...HOW HILARIOUS !!!"

    I mean seriously.
  • K · 1 year ago
"Wooooow, the insecurity level with you guys[...]"

Please. Now that everyone knows how the stupid "retards" are getting away with protesting as well as some African Americans, you feel you can pull the "fat" card now? Why don't the gays go after "Satan's Alley" then? Or better yet, how about the morons who love Steven Segal & Co. get on "Scorcher 1-19328292?"

So you're fat, get over it. Fatty.
  • Adrian · 1 year ago
"This isn’t the first time that Stiller has made callous fun of obese Americans. In the film Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, he plays the villain who used to be morbidly obese."

Honestly, that was your example? DODGEBALL? He's really not making callous fun of obese americans in that role. That's the best you could do? You've never seen HEAVY WEIGHTS? I mean, if you're going to write something condemning an actors career of callous, bigoted humor, at least do some homework. Fattie.
  • Ozmodius Maximus · 1 year ago
Exactly....key word 'used to be' do you need to write a follow up article about the malicious treatment of the formerly obese?

You're argument is needless and utterly flawed. I myself clock in at 18 stone on the scales and have no problem with this movie's jibes at being overweight.

I could blame upbringing/genetics or whatever you want but to tell the truth if I layed out a weeks worth of food on a table it'd probably break in half. I could half it, hell I could quarter it if I had to but I don't because I like food but I don't sit and whimper about it. If I want to lose weight I stop applying food to mouth and in the meantime I'm gonna keep on laughing at films like this because they are funny.

Futhermore as a sidenote I think you've seriously missed the angle of the jokes anway. The parody is, more than an attack on fat, an attack on the lame standard of Eddy Murphys terribly terribly unfunny body humour flicks of recent years.

Before you ask for an apology you might think about asking the rest of us if we want one.
  • Ahriman · 1 year ago
If you are not genetically predisposed for obesity (and even then there are remedies) then the only person to blame is you for being overweight! Too much "human rights" jinnerish about protecting overweight persons feelings or whatever... Get off you fat ass and exercise, fattie! Eat properly, do some physical work and instead of complaining and eating from fast-food establishments try to use your brain and body to find a way of fighting the "obese epidemic"...
And yes, families should be made fun of, because is their fault, after all, that the child is fat... if the parents are fat and used to complain about how they are treated while they stuff the child with junk and fat food, there is very little chance for the child to be a sport star... or a normal human being!
  • Allen · 1 year ago
Though I respect your right to be offended by "The Fatties: Fart 2" trailer, I think you've missed the point. All three trailers that were shown before the movie were meant to provide background on the three actors, portrayed by Stiller, Black and RDJ. All three were, in my opinion, the highlight of the film.

The "Fatties" trailer in particular, was not poking fun at fat people. If anything, it was making fun of the ridiculous movies that are being made that DO make fun of fat people (basically, every movie that Eddie Murphy has done for the last ten years -- "Norbit" comes to mind, ugh).

"Tropic Thunder" is satire, and it's gone over everyone's head for some reason. Lighten up. I'm fat too, but I'm not pissy about it.
  • Julie · 1 year ago
I will be incredibly depressed if any of The Fatties trailer is missing. It was hilarious. And Allen is right, it wasn't making fun of fat people, it was making fun of The Klumps and Norbit. Just relax and laugh with everyone else.
  • Kelly · 1 year ago
Well I'm not going to be immature like 80% of the people above me, but I do believe you are being a bit too harsh. You cite Eddie Murphy's roles, which are the exact same thing but with a black family instead of a white one. There is no difference, and that generated no controversy, so what is with the hatred towards this? People can make fun of minorities, religion, politics, eating disorders, mental disabilities, but WOAH got to stop it at fat and flatulence jokes? No, there is always going to be comedy that you disapprove of and offends someone, but writing in your little blog about it only generates more interest in the movie and that type of comedy. Think about that before you do something like this again.
  • Northie · 1 year ago
Here's a hint: Put down the fork, FACE!
  • Caulfield · 1 year ago
If you have a sophisticated sense of humor, this movie wasn't that funny. The first 30 minutes was solid but then it melted away and the whole Robert Downey act got old. I don't like Ben Stiller and Jack Black to be honest, so that's maybe why i wasn't too keen on it. Also, to those people getting offended - Calm the f*ck down. Grow up and don't be so damn touchy. People who are offended by the "racism" in this movie need to get their head out of their ass. Tropic thunder had no racist undertones and the whole Robert Downey Jr. playing a black dude was just a joke.
  • SouthBoy · 1 year ago
Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhh.......... Get over it. It's just a joke. Grow up.
  • Omar · 1 year ago
It is perfectly acceptable to laugh at obese individuals, they've done it to themselves. They
have control over what they consume, no one has a gene that just makes them fat. It's all
just another bullshit excuse so someone can sell their sob story, grow a sack and deal with
life. Unless this is all a joke, I'm pretty sure I hate you.
  • Cait · 1 year ago
I just want to point something out... of ALL the things to get offended at in this movie,
    you get offended at that????!

What about their making fun of mentally retarded people?? What about their making fun
of gays? What about their making fun of African Americans, pyromaniacs...? I mean,
come on. They make fun of EVERYONE.

Personally, I felt that "The Fatties" was more about making fun of how stupid Hollywood
has gotten-- all fart jokes, etc. "The Fatties" I definitely felt was geared towards pointing
out how dumb Eddie Murphy's "Norbit" and "The Klumps" were.

The "Simple Jack" thing was far more offensive in my opinion.
  • Cait · 1 year ago
    Hahahahah WAIT...

    I feel like an idiot....

    This article was a joke.

    LOL! Sorry.
  • Nathan · 1 year ago
What a ridiculous article. Are you in 8th grade or something?
  • b3ar · 1 year ago
The joke is on all of the people who commented here without actively thinking for thirty seconds. Perhaps Mr. Carr would be kind enough to reprint Swift's 'A Modest Proposal' and see what reaction results.
  • MrLoudTrousers · 1 year ago
This film doesn't make fun of fat people (or people with disabilities) at all. This film satirises the way hollywood deals with these subject matters, by making spoof trailers for a film about an over-the-top fat family and a mentally challenged farm-hand. If anything, you should be offended by the 'The Klumps' or 'The Ringer' which are just the kind of shit they're satirising.

I'm suprised by how many people don't seem to think about what's offending them, and ask themselves a question. 'Am I offended because whaat I'm seeing reminds me of myself?'
  • Jersey Mom · 1 year ago
I see nothing positive in a satire aimed at overweight individual. Sadly, more and more Americans are classified as "obese" every year. Not hard to see in a "supersized" society that doesn't like to be held accountable for anything. Schools today are afraid to send letters home to the parents of obese kids, many of whom are equally large. The "upside" if you want to call it that, is that fat kids aren't being made fun of as much anymore, since there are more and more of them in each class. Parents are to blame, since many encourage their overweight child to keep piling on the food and the calories. The majority of kids today are sedentary, which only compounds the problem. Parents need to lead by example. Weight loss is a good place to start, and "fat satires" don't get the message across.
  • Frank · 1 year ago
Settle down, have a cheeseburger and chill the hell out.
Obesity is not a disease, it's not an affliction. It's an excuse. Obesity is a simple case of lacking self control.
  • Bee · 1 year ago
    So censorship is okay?

This politically correct thing has gotten completely out of control. I saw no reference in that spoof that indicated all obese people fart, blah blah blah.

It's called a parody for a reason. Did you gripe about DUMB AND DUMBER because it made a parody based on simple dog groomers? Was the dog grooming community up in arms over the portrayal of a couple of dimwits? Did that represent dog groomers worldwide?

Piece of advice? Find a real cause. Perhaps you could think of a solution to the failing global economy instead of whining about some politically correct cause-celeb. Because it's useless, annoying, and smacks of censorship.
  • kenny · 1 year ago
When I first saw The Fatties Fart 2 fake trailer on the movie I wished it was a real movie. It was humorous, it (in my opinion) was funnier than many of the scenes for Nutty Professor.

I honestly never found this movie (tropic thunder) to be offensive, it was simply a bunch of people expressing their views the way they see things. Sure there might've been a few racial things going on, it was all light hearted, it wasn't serious to the point where a certain group of people will jump on the band waggon to get the film destroyed and Stiller a lynching.

Personally I think this is one of the best movies I have seen. It's about time somebody had the balls to make a movie where they wasn't afraid to speak their mind.
  • kenny · 1 year ago
I forgot to add, many of your complaints regarding Stiller are not founded. Does it mean that fat people should not be allowed to be in movies? Does it mean that people cannot become fat people for movies? If you think this way then I'm sorry, it is YOU who is being bias towards overweight people.
  • fat ass janelle · 1 year ago

you can't be serious! it's a comedy movie. in my opinion if you can make fun of one thing, you can make fun of anything. i can't believe you are serious about this and not the whole 'simple jack' 'you went full retard' thing. i consider myself to be quite desensitized by the vast amount of horrible things i've witnessed or seen on web, but i think the 'retard' thing would be the thing to be offended by. fat people with gas is just funny dood.

for the record, i consider myself overweight for my age and height, and i am actually very self-conscience. i do however think that however overweight i may be or think i am, i would still find this funny. its not even really a joke about fat people, its a joke on the nutty professor (which i love btw) for sure.
  • Chris · 10 months ago
I'm gonna have to say you are not only FAT but DUMB. This fake trailer was making FUN of the Eddie murphy movies and how they portray fat people as doing nothing but eat and fart.

Do you understand what sarcasm is?

You should be applauding Jack Black for showing the world what Eddie Murphy's career has boiled down to, fat and fart jokes.

  • robertdchavez · 3 months ago
I'm fat too. Get over it, it was funny. If anything i think it was more of a stab at Eddie Murphy than fat people. All the trailers were there to represent big hollywood actors. Over dramatic. Too many sequels. Ridiculous product placement. And the desperation for the spotlight in playing too many characters. And yea fat people are funny. I'm freakin hilarious. It's a movie. If it offends you then don't watch it. And especially don't waste your time trashing it.
