Kevin, i'm right with ya. The whole idea that puppets from sesame street in any way shape or fashion are dangerous just goes to show how ludicrous society has become. Monsterpiece theater was a spoof MEANT to be directed at the parents that was the whole point. good gawd! I remember seeing children literally RUN to OSCAR and Cookie and hug them to death! there was no fear, there was no anger, and there certainly was no ill effects placed upon their psyche. I remember and admit to laughing and laughing HARD at their antics. I suppose Bert and Ernie are now considered gay because they were roommates. geez why do adults have to go and destroy everything innocent and funny and just plain good humor.

This is the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard, I grew up with sesame street and I for am not a gluttonous pig from watching cookie monster scoff cookies nor do I smoke a pipe (or any other substance) As for poor old Oscar how could he not be a little grumpy he shared a garbage can with an elephant for gods sake. I think there are much worse things out there being a bad influence on our children, sesame street is the last thing we should be worried about them watching.

Why the hell bash Oscar or the Cookie Monster. Damn if you are gonna bash kid shows do it right and bash the hell out of Barney or Blues Clues. The shows we had as kids were 100 times better than what is produced for them today. The cartoons back when I was a kid were a hell of a lot better than what is on today. Like what is the deal with spongebob? a freaking talking kitchen sponge living the ocean?

My personal favorite was the school house rock stuff that was shown between cartoons on saturdays.

I don't see that this is all that bad. Yes it is a but stupid, but while the character's aren't dangerous, modern preschoolers may find them confusing. Think about it: how many kids characters are ever grouchy, or in any way unpleasant? From what I can tell without actually watching the show, Oscar has mellowed quite a bit. Seeing him be the dick that he used to be probably won't be so nice for kids used to Oscar 2.0. Same with cookie monster. He's basically turned into the poster child for healthy eating habits (despite appearing to be morbidly obese), so most kids won't understand why all he does on the old ones is pig out. Anyway, I don't understand why parents would buy old Sesame Street episodes; since they have exceptionally rapid audience turnover, they've been using essentially the same 3 seasons since the 70s.

Just read all they way through. The coddling of kids that is currently en vouge (sp?) pretty much comes from having parents who were hard asses. And it will in turn produce a generation upset with their parents for sheltering them, who will try not to do that. The pattern forms a wave.

I, too, read all the way through the post and the comments. I also felt constrained to comment, so here goes. I NEVER cared for Sesame Street, but to find the Cookie Monster and Oscar the Grouch 'harmful' in any way would likely mean there are a LOT of folks out there who are educated far, far beyond their intelligence. Then again, look at those in power...on all sides.

My Daughter-in-law and I have bought the old shows for my granddaughter. She loves them, and they don't drive adults nuts to have them on. I raised 3 kids who watched the old Sesame St. They are great adults and seldom eat cookies -- and are not afraid of grouchy people!

Are we kidding?? My son is 4, and he watches Semase Street.... and he would laugh, and laugh.... Cookie monster, and Grouch have been around forever!! I would love to meet the fucking idiots that say that they are bad for kids.... The whole show is about kids, and feelings... Cookie monster makes people laugh, the pipe he smokes it's just supposed to go w/ his jacket... IT"S a PROP!! What little kid is going to say HEY I WANT TO SMOKE...
