Film School Rejects: Wolverine May Spawn Spin-Offs for Real

  • GyPirate09 · 6 months ago
WOW!! I would still like to see Gambit in the Spin-offof Wolverine again in the sequel. But to put Gambit into a self made movie would be a bit hard. I wouldn't mind to see the villain Mr. Sinister on screen and maybe bring back Mystique in the picture as well. But a romance budding with Rogue in sometime future would be impossible since she is in X-Men Trilogies and the 'First Class' is in the works. I guess we can spawn a different love interest in the movie as well. Either way I would love to see Gambit in the big screen again but the question is how?

I am a big Gambit fan, but I don't think a movie based solely on him would be any good. He's like a great supporting character. You want him in there for a quick quib or smart ass comment and then kicking someone's ass.

Honestly, I think the X-Men are always at their best (in both comics, films, and even the animated TV series) when they work as a team and there's an ensemble effort going on, otherwise it runs the risk of alienating some fans. Personally, I couldn't care less for Gambit (and even Wolverine isn't that interesting on his own) but stick a bunch of the mutant together and then I'm interested.

Sell the rights for Deadpool back to Marvel and have them do it. Bam, practically guaranteed better.
  • HappyPalooza · 6 months ago
Whoa, why was I rated down? You'd rather have Fox do a Deadpool movie than Marvel?
  • Rhys Paine · 6 months ago
I want spin-offs, I just don't want them done poorly.
  • Jules · 6 months ago
    Ditto.
  • Chille · 6 months ago
How can they do a Deadpool spin-off if they completely ruined him by giving him laser eyes, an adamantium skeleton, and teleportation?
  • Amanda · 6 months ago
I'd love to see a Deadpool spin-off, for sure. I was really pleased with Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool. And, say what you will about Gambit's solo stuff... I would totally go see a Gambit movie. Actually, I daresay that any X-film with Gambit in it will get a great response from the female fanbase. We uterus-bearing folks tend to be quite fond of him, you know. (That's definitely one thing I can say for the XO:W; it wisely gave the female fans some greeeeat fanservice.)
  • _Christopher_M · 6 months ago
I really think Gambit has the best chance to get made...you're right about the lady factor but that just means they really did cast Remy perfectly....I mean Remy has always been the heartthrob of the series and easily appeals to the female fanbase...Gambit always had some sort of love story along with tons of action and villains....it would have that Spider-Man appeal for both sexes...let's just hope Fox can convince Bryan Singer to direct and also bring back David Hayter (X2, Watchmen) to write....
  • GuiltyTrace · 6 months ago
I know a lot of people who had been Gambit fans since the animated series aired on Saturday mornings. Cyclops was a bitch and Gambit was the shit - it was the same story with everyone I asked. On the other hand, with Ryan Reynolds a part of the franchise now, it's hard to say what would net more cash: a Gambit story or another X-Men flick with Reynold's face all over it. I can practically smell all those wet panties if the studio went with option B.
  • RobertFure · 6 months ago
Don't get me wrong, I love Gambit. He was always one of my favorites. It's just a lot of his solo adventures sucked. But I'd totally see it.
  • _Christopher_M · 6 months ago
what about his inovlement with Mr. Sinister and the mass murder of the Morlocks? he ended up killing tons of mutants alongside Sabertooth and Mystique ...that could be an interesting movie

the simple fact is that Fox is losing the blockbuster race against Warner Bros. and Marvel/Universal...if they want to keep their profits up they are going to need make a certain amount of comic books movies a year...since they only have the rights to a limited amount of Marvel characters they're are going to have to use up all the characters from X-Men since they are the most known and cherished..compared to say Daredevil and Fantastic Four
  • RobertFure · 6 months ago
The Morlock story was good, but it wasn't a solo tale. It was Uncanny X-Men #350. I still have 2 copies of the special cover in bags in storage. =)

But all he did was break into the tunnels, he didn't actually kill anyone. I don't think Fox, or anyone, can justify a $150 million Gambit movie. If you see spin-offs, you're probably going to see much smaller movies, like $60-80. They won't be aiming for Blockbusters. As cool as Gambit and Deadpool are, neither are names that resonate with non-comic fans.
  • _Christopher_M · 6 months ago
I didn't end up reading the Gambit series, did you? because I'm sure there is some material in there that could be a starting point for a good movie...even if it's a 80 million dollar one...they really need to get "good" screenwriters they can make almost any movie if there is a great script...Gambit has a selling point because he resonates with X-Men fans...theres is a name recognition for anyone who watched the many cartoons or comics...kids know who Gambit is even more so with the movie..Deadpool not so much, yet there is a solid story with Deadpool...

you're right Fox more than likely will make a lower budget film maybe on the same level as the first two Blade movies...speaking of Blade, you'd think that since Warner Bros. finally owns a Marvel character they'd get work on Blade 4
  • RobertFure · 6 months ago
I read all of Gambits solo titles. They were all pretty weak because they always involved New Orleans instead of cool shit.
  • _Christopher_M · 6 months ago
do you have any confidence that David S. Goyer or David Hayter could develop a decent Gambit script even if they have to barrow or create a bigger/better story for Remy? I mean they have a massive rouges gallery of villains in the X-Men universe...personally I'd love it if he went up against the Sentinel program, Omega Red or even Apocalypse ...if we never see a fourth X-Men film Fox might as well use the amazing villains that went unused....hell they could even use the mutant plague
  • LittleMovieMan · 6 months ago
Ryan Reynolds was perfect for Dead Pool
  • Amanda · 6 months ago
I'm not sure I'd say Gambit has the best chance at getting made; I actually see Deadpool as more of a possibility, mostly because I've been reading more about that than about any other possible spin-off from this. I think Reynolds' vocal willingness to participate in a Deadpool spin-off makes it a strong possibility, too.

I do think Gambit has a chance at being featured in more X-men films now, even if they don't give him his own spin-off. (I'm not saying for a moment I don't want to see such a thing come about; I just don't think it's as likely as a Deadpool flick.) I hope the studios got the message when the fanbase reacted so strongly to Gambit's absence in X3. A lot of fans had been waiting for him to show up ever since his name appeared in that database in X2.

As for Singer and Hayter... I'm right there with you on that if they go for a solo flick. I was fairly pleased with Kitsch as Remy, but I'd love to hear him take on a little more of the accent. I know in XO:W they gave him the Ultimates sort of Southern/Cajun hybrid, but... It's a thing, for me. I wasn't crazy about the eyes, either. Remy's eyes have always been a key trait of his, and I was hoping they'd stay a bit truer to that. Oh well. Minor things, pick your battles, etc. When all's said and done, I'm pleased enough with the way Gambit turned out in this one that I guess I can forgive the little things.

Though I would rather see a Gambit spinoff, it's most likely going to be Deadpool first, as Ryan Reynolds is a much more known actor than Taylor Kitsch (who is great in Friday Night Lights). They could recast Gambit if they wanted, but I liked Kitsch as Gambit, though it was too brief.

    Dennis
  • _Christopher_M · 6 months ago
I really hope they don't recast Gambit because they might end up doing that ....so they can have an older actor in the spin-off and possibly in X4....Taylor was great he seemed to know what the character was about and even learned how to handle the cards like Remy....Fox could make a decent action star out of Kitsch and give them their own new leading man...not a bad idea since others would ask for a lot more money to play the role

to be honest I really didn't know much about Deadpool before Wolverine and it's mostly because I didn't notice him in a majority of the comics..I knew the back story somewhat but the average moviegoer isn't going to know who he is...Gambit on the other hand is very well known X-Men member and fans have been dying to see him since the first film..I don't think there were as many people asking for a Deadpool movie
  • ThinkHero · 6 months ago
The question is if FOX is willing to put that much money into a potential side franchise with Gambit on a relatively unknown actor.

I also liked Kitsch as Gambit, just not sure if FOX is willing to take that gamble.

    Dennis
  • _Christopher_M · 6 months ago
there is always the chance of recasting Gambit but did enjoy Kitsch's performance....Fox always has the right to recast since Kitsch isn't proven yet...like with Fure was saying Fox more than likely won't give these two spin-offs any sort of huge budget...more like in the 80million range...I think it's safe to say if the budget is lower Taylor will stay as Gambit... I mean if they can put Chris Evans and Jessica Alba in a 100million dollar movie I think this idea is less than a creative gamble....we all agree Taylor did a great job, besides the accent nobody really has been bashing the guy

    Spin-offs Fox Wants:
Magneto is on hold until they can get David S. Goyer off his high-horse wanting to direct it....I really doubt it's going to get made anytime soon...X-Men: First Class is the one the studio is eager to make because it's starring a ton of small/unknown actors, so they can make it for a lot less....I really think it would end up X-Men super-lite the same level of awful as X3....it's more than likely going to end up looking like some crappy CW show along with the same acting talent...instead of developing another franchise with Gambit and Deadpool...they're going to make a film similar to what we saw with Dragonball or Chun-Li because they don't know the properly formula to make these movies work... I really doubt that fans want to see X-Men: First Class...it's just an excuse not to make X-Men 4 which everyone would rather see

    Spin-offs Fans Want:
Gambit is the best bet for the film "fans" actually want to see, myself included...if they do it properly if could be their next franchise...some of the better Gambit stories involved him joining Mr. Sinister's Marauders trying to find a way to control his powers...he ends up along with Sabertooth and Mystique causing the mass murder of the Morlocks...it would be a lot darker than what we've seen...they could along with the Thieves Guild making it a massive mutant gang war flick....if that doesn't work they could always use the Sentinels or Omega Red as the villains... I mean if they can get Singer for Gambit that would be the greatest thing ever and expect it being epic...David Hayter needs to return and write a decent script because they've been slacking on the quality of the writing

when it comes to Deadpool they'd have to completely re-tell the story of Wade Wilson and give the character the respect...he's one of the better and more interesting characters in the X-Men universe...it's just going to be the film they make after a majority of the others...I hope to see more Scott Adkins along with the fast talking of Ryan Reynolds

they really should be focusing on developing Wolverine 2 thats what the biggest point is from this weekend's box office
  • ThinkHero · 6 months ago
Unfortunately though, because of the success of Wolverine, it gives FOX more reason to not concentrate on story or character development for Wolverine 2 and possible Deadpool or Gambit spinoffs.

Why try, if you can make tons of cash without writing a decent story or characters?

    Dennis
  • _Christopher_M · 6 months ago
well they did mention approaching Singer and Donner could make it happen....I don't think they intentionally make bad movies I just think they hired people on the cheap or who are inexperienced with the material....you get what you pay for...like I mentioned if they at least hire someone like David Hayter (X2, Watchmen) who understands the characters to write the screenplay it wouldn't end up so jumbled and questionable....also hiring an experienced action director think something between J.J. Abrams and Bryan Singer....it could be a great movie if Fox gives it the creative breathing room....I mean they're giving a lot of space on Predators for Robert Rodriquez...why not Gambit or Deadpool who don't already have an established franchise yet?

I doubt that they aren't trying to improve character development for Wolverine 2...Fox approached the Slumdog Millionaire screenwriter, that's at least start in the right direction...along with the possiblity Zack Snyder could direct the sequel
  • ThinkHero · 6 months ago
Hopefully you are right, but I'm not too optimistic. Studios tend to start thinking too much about the $$$ and begin ruining franchises. For example, look at the Batman and Spider-Man Franchises. Eventually they hit a point where too much money is at stake and start taking creative control away from the people who have it.

If they bring back Bryan Singer that would be great. JJ Abrams or Zach Snyder as a director would give me hope as well.

    Dennis
  • _Christopher_M · 6 months ago
Gavin Hood was a replacement for Zack Snyder who optioned to make Watchmen instead...so I do expect Snyder to at least be asked for Wolverine 2....

when it comes to Singer, I'm doubtful he's going to be asked back for another Superman...J.J. Abrams might end up taking over....Singer loves X-Men I just think he was tired of directing the same movie...if they do offer him Gambit or Deadpool I think he'd take it because the material hasn't really been done and it's a different superhero outlet for him...Deadpool could end up very cool with Singer behind it
  • _Christopher_M · 6 months ago
Deadpool is one choice but I don't think Fox is ready to make such a different and wacky type of comic book movie...they don't do humor and action well...look at Fantastic Four, Deadpool could end up just as disappointing... I mean I enjoy the character but you'd really need people who stick with the comics and don't take liberties again

when it comes to Remy's eyes I'm sure they could end up making the red more apparent with contacts..similar to the somewhat cool effect in Dune....I think his increased power from Mr. Sinister could have a role in it...also be kind to Kitsch he is a Canadian actor who more than likely isn't exposed to that accent on a daily basis...most Americans can't even do a Cajun or Southern accent properly
  • LittleMovieMan · 6 months ago
I think Dead Pool should get his costume on and kick som ass in his own movie
  • LittleMovieMan · 6 months ago
oh im not sure that any one has seen my other rants buy my idea im trying to spread is getting some notice, for a wile i've been suggesting movies that I would love to see, and alot of others think so as well... Now here me out, "Versus", they could make so many movies like that, heres an example.. lets say Mr.X sees a strong alien presence in New York city, and sends wolverine to investigate, when he gets there he stumbles upon Venom fuckin givin birth to Carnage! BOOM Wolverine Vs Venom and Carnage! How sweet would that be, maybe some cameos from spiderman and x-men BOOM, you got a kick ass movie...
  • _Christopher_M · 6 months ago
the problem of that would be that Ryan's face would be covered up with a mask
