  • Christy Schultz · 1 year ago
I liked him in The Long, Hot Summer as Ben Quick. I like that movie because it is one of the first movies I remember seeing.
  • peter · 1 year ago
Well, coincidentally, my favorite Paul Newman role is as Luke in Cool Hand Luke. The way that each of his characters has carried a certain smugness, you know it will always get him into trouble at some point. Well in this movie he is already in trouble, being detained already, so I like the tenacity he shows to keep his spirits up.

And the egg scene is good fun, and classic cinema.
  • kelvin hobson · 1 year ago
It has to be Luke,he was made for this film, and the film itself is a classic!
  • Darren Perleberg · 1 year ago
Fast Eddie Felson in "The Color Of Money".

My favorite character is Henry Gondorff from The Sting. He is so smooth, he plays a drunk
very VERY well and he's funny as all hell. The relationship between him and Redford is
classic in that movie, the mentor and mentoree. He nailed that part.
  • Will C · 1 year ago
My favorite Paul Newman character is Cool Hand Luke, I love his acting in that film, and always having that slick grin on his face no matter what. That film is one of my all time favorites
  • April · 1 year ago
There are so many great Paul Newman roles, but I'd have to say my favorite is Henry Gondorff in The Sting. Paul was perfect in that role and I couldn't image any other actor playing a scoundrel quite as good as Paul did.
  • Sarah · 1 year ago
I think Paul Newman's best role was Brick in Cat On A Ht Tin Roof. He was amazing and the chemistry among the entire cast was perfect for the film. I've seen the play several times, but I still don't think anyone can beat Paul Newman's performance.
  • Tom · 1 year ago
Henry Gondorff in "The Sting". To this day I start my morning by plunging my face into a sink filled with icy cold water.
  • Matthias Galvin · 1 year ago
    Frank Galvin.
I find that Paul Newman's finest hour was in Sidney Lumet's The Verdict. Newman played the part with such subtlety and an quiet, unspoken dignity that it's one of his finest performances. I think that the collusion of things made his performance that much better. In addition to just having the right "fit" for the part, he was the right age, and had the right experience of enough of life to have (in some ways) identified with his character.
  • Linda N · 1 year ago
My favorite character is HUD. Such a sexy bad boy!
  • ddog · 1 year ago
favorite newman role for me was reg in slap shot him and the hanson brothers were fantastic and have always loved that film. my favorite sports film of all time.

I'M LISTENING TO THE FREAKIN SONG !!

ah the film has so many classic lines and newman was fantastic in the film.wish there were more movies like this nowadays.
  • marleenandlouie · 1 year ago
My favorite of all time? Wow, tough, but I'd have to say Fast Eddie, the Pool Player--playing against Jackie Gleason--what a performance by both of them!
  • Ken Robinson · 1 year ago
Paul Newman as Luke Jackson in "Cool Hand Luke"
  • Harold · 1 year ago
Butch Cassidy - it was the very first movie I've ever seen him in, and it was one of
    my favorites for a while.
  • Mike · 1 year ago
Hands down, cool hand luke. He had such strength and even more weakness all hidden
behind his eyes. a great performance that in my opinion holds its own against the likes of
brando. And newman makes one heck of a salad dressing...
  • Ethan S · 1 year ago
His role as Butch Cassidy is a favorite of mine. He was really memorable and the chemistry between Robert Redford and him made that film a classic.
  • danielle dipasquale · 1 year ago
my favorite has to be as luke in Cool Hand Luke~he's the classic American rebel with such character, his character never waivered to conform with the others...
love him in that film, but then again, there really wasn't a film I didn't like him in :)
  • Eva · 1 year ago
I liked him as John Russell in Hombre.
  • David Hollingsworth · 1 year ago
His performances in films such "Hud", "Cool Hand Luke", "The Verdict", 'Butch Cassidy", and "The Hustler" were absolutely iconic, but I always respected his beyond riveting portrayal of Rocky Graziano in "Somebody Up There Likes Me"; he just exuded the physicality, with a very rare ruthlessness, vulnerability, and truth that is extremely hard to come by these days. It was a very difficult part to play, but he nailed it perfectly, and you'd think that he would be terrible in giving the New York accent, but he pulls it off flawlessly, to the point that you could actually believe that he was from New York.
  • Jon · 1 year ago
Without a doubt, "Cool Hand Luke" is my favorite Paul Newman role. Especially since his bit with the soda cans was lifted for the film "Prison on Fire" (aka "The Prisoner").
  • Uber · 1 year ago

I still have yet to see many of his classics. One that I have seen is the Sting and it really stood out for me. He played the likeable con artist to a tee.
  • Wes · 1 year ago
Paul as himself- the founder of Newmans Own. His acting talent is obvious, but to create an organization that not only offers great product, but also provides incredible humanitarian benefit and $$ to less fortunate individuals. He is a true hero to mankind.
  • Sandy · 1 year ago
loved butch cassidy- he is so talented
  • Tyler Mann · 1 year ago
My Favorite Character that Paul Newman has played is Reggie "Reg" Dunlap the once great player/coach of the Charleston Chiefs. The way he led his team with those massive bloody fights on the hockey ring was hilarious. Followed by a close second with Cool Hand Luke. It is hard to beat Paul Newman full of 50 eggs about to pass out., but a think Reggie stole it.

Wow. I just went to IMDB, and I think the only Paul Newman movie I've seen is "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." Isn't that weird? So, I'd have to say Butch Cassidy. Or could I say that I prefer him in the role of my great-aunt's neighbor? Well, former neighbor. They both used to live on the same street in Connecticut, back in the 1970s. I don't know if they hung out, my I remember my aunt saying she really enjoyed watching him mow the lawn.

Fast Eddie in The COlor Of Money. This is when I began really taking an interest in actors and actresses in movies. Just coming of age and it wasn't all about the cartoons and entertainment value. He was incredible in the movie and really sent me to the video store to get the vhs of all his other movies. Hey, Cool Hand Luke, The Sting, Slapshot.....all great movies, but I have to credit THe Color of Money to introducing me to Paul.
  • Geoff K · 1 year ago
My favorite Newman performance was as Brick Pollitt in the 1958 adaptation of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" - Paul handles this complex Tennessee Williams character with ease, and the tense push-and-pull chemistry he had with Elizabeth Taylor was electrifying.

"What we've got here is a failure to communicate." — spoken by "Luke", from Cool Hand Luke. My favorite because I was given the nickname at 9 or 10 and it wasn't until years later that I saw the movie and understood it. Unfortunately, the name fit.

In contemporary usage the line is usually an illustrative mockery of the principle behind it; the allocation of blame or fault for refusal to agree with or accept a powerful nemesis. The phrase is often articulated with a Southern American drawl in imitation of the character who first delivered the line.

I saw Paul Newman in the audience at a New York play. There was more interest in him than the show. My favorite role of his was Henry Gondorff in "The Sting". The fun he had in the poker game on the train is classic.
  • Bridgette KolesarWilliams · 1 year ago
I loved him in: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The chemistry between him and Redford was electric. I remember watching an interview Redford was doing of Newman at Newman's house a few years back, and it was the funniest thing I had ever seen! You could see the mutual respect that they had for each other, and why they were friends to the end. I believe we have lost a true humanitarian, excellent
actor, and a friend for all mankind. Paul Newman you will be greatly missed
  • Carrie · 1 year ago
It's hard to choose but Luke because it changed the definition of cool. An anti-hero could be the lead character in a motion picture.
