Film School Rejects: Warner Bros. Unsure About Where to take the Man of Steel

  • William · 1 year ago
A fresh perspective would be nice, since Singer adhered to Donner too much. And the kid was just a terrible idea.
  • Johnny Boy · 1 year ago
They should do a complete reboot of the franchise. New actors, new director, brand new
film. They should take the Batman Begins approach... basically do a Superman Begins
film, except call it something else... like maybe Superman: The Last Son of Krypton.

And they need to make Clark Kent as interesting as Superman. Perhaps they should
focus on his need to fit in rather than just making him a clumsy nerdy disguise for
    Superman.

We've been getting SUPERMAN BEGINS for... what? Ten years now in the form of SMALLVILLE. I don't think we need a SUPERMAN BEGINS. Everybody knows where he came from and what is goals and ambitions are. Just find a compelling Superman story and shoot it. No kids. No islands made of kryptonite. No creepy peeping tom-ism. And for God's sake, no angst. Superman kicks ass and takes names and then he puts the names on tiny scraps of paper and burns them to ash with his heat vision and then he kicks more ass and chews bubblegum, except without the bubblegum.

Warner should drop Singer and let the writing/directing duties for the next Supes film go to ME! I can make this sucker.

Smallville is so stupid. How is that Superman begins?
  • Mister Hand · 1 year ago
Johnny Boy said: "Smallville is so stupid. How is that Superman begins?"

No argument--I'm not a big fan of the show. I'm just saying that there's no way anyone could have missed the SUPERMAN origin story by now. We don't need another one. Skip it. Get to the story of Superman crushing bad guys with his arms of steel and then blowing freeze breath on them until they FREEZE and then crumble into bits. And then burn up the bits with his heat vision. And then proceed to kick somebody's ass clear to Pluto, which is still a planet, dammit.

4 words= ditch the theme tune. I know it's John Williams and it's amazing but so was the
Batman one and they changed that. They must start anew, at the beginning if they want.
New theme, new suite, a total change of direction that does not reference or hark back to
Donner in anyway. Even give Kevin Smith ago just keep it away from the following people=

    Josh somthing the Buffy guy
    Nic cage
    Brian Singer
    McG.

we don't need anything, this movie only came out 2 years ago for christ sake.

but no doubt the studio wants to cash in, so if they do a new movie, please no reboot. i'm tired of rehashing old ideas.
We definitly don't need an origin, the first superman movie accomplishes that already, just get a new director, and make a new superman movie, it doesn't have to be a reboot in order to improve on the last one.
how about a movie with the death of superman storyline, bring in Doomsday to kill off the stupid Superkid from the last one right off the bat and then go from there
  • SUPERJUNK · 1 year ago
    Give it to Mark Millar

Do we really want an Incredible Hulk do-over, relaunch, remake, re...whatever. Sure, Singer's superman sucked but can we wait a little longer before Hollywood goes and screws up Superman. How about giving it to Guillermo Del Toro...or Peter Jackson, or Zack Snyder..he's free right?

im tired of the boring old formulaic superman kryptonite blah blah..lets have a different take on the story. of course the main elements should be maintained; his origins et all but im pretty sure theres a nolan-esque director out there who can bring a whole new look to this ready to milk franchise!
  • Vin · 1 year ago
WTF is wrong with you people? Seriously, naming off random directors that fit well in certain movies to take on one of the biggest characters in the past 150 years is quite dangerous. Why would del Toro be a good fit? Or Zack Snyder? Do you really see them accomplishing anything, given their style and taste? It's crazy what can happen in Hollywood because of people's animal instinct for familiarity. Singer did a great job by combining the two aspects with his casting- Brandon Routh was an unknown, yet he held an eerie similarity (looks wise) to the original actor. That's GENIUS.

If Singer doesn't have the direction that the studio wants, then sorry, he needs to move out of the way. If people are still crying about artistic merit and integrity at this point in time, we have all but lost any chance of good big-budget cinema. Like any business, a Hollywood company has executives and board members looking for the best way to make money. No matter how great a story a writer/director may have, if it isn't deemed successful than sorry, you need to rethink it to their standards, maybe fighting a bit, but not biting the hand that feeds. But if the two collide and we have a box office smash and good/great/excellent movie (e.g Dark Knight) then perfect!

At this point, complaining about Superman Returns doesn't bring us a great new Superman movie. Once again on the familiarity topic, L.A is FILLED with people trying to make a name for themselves, and if not of those people have a good idea for a Superman movie, then what is that town good for? It's because of the strive to keep only the known and prosperous in Hollywood around that creates this terrible amount bad movies. Bring in outsiders, whether it be a film school reject (an actual one, but maybe Neil Miller has a kick-ass supes script that needs to be unleashed) or one of the thousands of writers/artists in the comics biz. Brad Meltzer (who is also an author) penned one of the best mini series in a while with Identity Crisis, if he could bring that magic to a nice screenplay we would all be talking about how much we can't till mm/dd/yyyy not "OMG BRIAN SINGER IS GREAT" "NO HE'S NOT, HE RUINED SUPERMAN AND IS TERRIBLE, DIE SINGER".

    *Heavy Breath* I'm done.
  • Johnny Boy · 1 year ago
I'll say it again cause it needs repeating. A COMPLETE REBOOT OF THE
FRANCHISE... new actor, new director, new everything. Just start the
Superman franchise fresh without any association to the previous films
within the franchise, just like Batman Begins did with the Batman franchise.
  • Johnny Boy · 1 year ago
by the way, did anyone notice that Superman has super hair also? When he's
flying his hair is messy, and then when he comes in for his landing, his hair
is perfectly combed. That's another thing that's got to change in the
    Reboot... Messy hair for Superman!

    Nipples on Superman.
  • mijj · 1 year ago
whatever they choose to do ..

... FFS ...PLEASE .. enough with the annoying, intrusive, distracting background music filling every goddam second of the flick.
  • Sebastian Z · 1 year ago
Was I the only one that really liked Singer's Superman Returns?
  • Douglas · 1 year ago
Sebastian, there are some of us out there. It doesn't seem like there are very many of us though.
  • Dengar · 1 year ago
MILLAR!!! Friggin Brilliant, he can do it, at least for the writing aspects.

Its sad, I thought Singer would have something, but I am tired of the Donner Crystal
superman. We need a new approach.

Kevin Spacey was pretty dope, but we need Brainiac!
  • Dengar · 1 year ago
Oh and I didn't hate Superman Returns, I just felt that the action was lacking, although what
action there was was breath taking. I see it almost in the same way I see the Ang Lee Hulk
movie. Just not enough true superman action, and too much lovey dovey Lois Lane bull
    crap.

And what about that friggin kid?!! what the hell was that?! That added nothing and in my
opinion, this whole focus and worship of Dick Donner and Chris Reeves needs to end
    already.
  • Brian Rodden · 1 year ago
Singer is great and I think needs another chance with Superman. The script needs to be awesome though and Kate Bosworth cannot be Lois Lane.

San Dimas High School Football Rules!

    Christian Bale rules as well.
  • Mister Hand · 1 year ago
Singer's good, but he's no ME.

I'm telling you, I'm the guy to make this movie.

    Picture this:

Worst person on the face of the planet, worst most vile supervillain you can imagine.

Superman pounds him, crushes him, and then smashes his bones into coal, and then into diamonds. And then he flies out into space, spins the Earth's rotation backwards to reverse time, and does it again.

    NOW THAT'S a Superman movie.
  • Cole Abaius · 1 year ago
I had to spin the Earth's rotation backward to reverse time when I was working on my master's thesis. I had worked for hours on this chart and then accidentally erased it! Instead of starting from scratch, I figured it would be easier to fly around the planet. Because that's how time travel works. Seriously.

I would find out years later that I could have just pressed Ctrl-Z. Crazy computers!
  • Aleric · 1 year ago
One of the greatest action heros of all time and they have him standing around looking angst and worried over a girl.

Here's a novel concept, bring in a villian with comperable powers to Superman or a host of villians, ala Darkseid and then have Superman go to town. Hell pick up any of the comics from the last 20 years, pick a frigging compelling story line and make it. How hard is that when you have it right in front of you?
  • Nathan · 1 year ago
I didn't like Superman Returns at all, save maybe the always amazing Kevin Spacey. He is about the only thing from that movie I would consider bringing back although honestly, I can't even remember how that movie ended, just that I wanted to leave. Just replace everyone and try again I guess.
  • Supernetuser · 1 year ago
Did everybody forget to mention a by-gone TV-show, Lois and Clarke: The New Adventures of Superman, which was out long before Smallville ever became Smallville. Vin, familiarity does not lend to creativity, take it from a writer - I mean the real aspects of creativity are what makes something ORIGINAL. Familiarity is boring, many of us right now in this climate of remakes feel tired of the remakes, we want something never-before seen that will become embedded in our cultural references. Don't forget, Star Wars was once unknown. Movies used to be original, but remake central is getting boring. In the case of Superman, yeah, I need messy hair too. If his hair is blowing in the wind, we need him to land with messy hair. He's way too perfect unless he has a comb hidden away in his tights somewhere. I don't need to be in the heart of Los Angeles, almost the den of evil in some ways, (no that could be Vegas), to feel I need to make a name for myself in writing. I went to writing school but I almost double-majored in film school which would have taken longer, though a year later, I found my way here, the most refreshing blog I write on. I'm dirt poor right now with a few ideas floating around in my head for novels, a novel on the way, and a few movie ideas in fact. So yeah, I'm one of the many who wants to get somewhere, without having to re-vision or re-make a found movie with found imagery. There is something to be spoken for originality or the lack thereof we are facing in the movie world right now.

Superman Returns ROCKED. Come on WB, give us a direct sequel (Man of Steel) - let Singer
go X2 on it's ass and get moving!!!!
  • Aravind · 10 months ago
Reboot is a MUST. Throw out Singer and Routh. Give superman a "down to earth" approch just like christopher nolan did to Batman. May be bring Tom Willing as the new Superman.
