I don't get it. Is it supposed to be an origin story - without Spidey? Makes no sense. I mean, I haven't read the Venom comics either, but does ol' Eddie Brock get the symbiote under his tree one Xmas morning or something?

Although most of Venom's solo works took the much different lethal protector standpoint of him protecting innocents and eventually working for the government, there were still some pretty awesome stories, especially the ones, as mentioned, involving his symbiote's offspring Carnage and many times intertwining with many other of the Marvel Universe's denizens including Wolverine, Punisher, Ghost Rider, Daredevil, etc.
I personally would rather see a much darker take on the character and not the early 90's mullet toting cut off t-shirt wearing Eddie Brock. But hell, anything would be better than Topher Grace's version which in no way resembles any interpretation of the character except the sick cancer ridden suicidal Eddie Brock from just a few years ago.

well in spiderman 3 you see peter parker stop a bit of venom on doctor connors table with a glass and connors says you better not get any of that on you peter.

maybe connors kept the remaining venom that was left and studied it for a while, and there was a freak accident in the laboratory and the venom was mixed with physical body inhancements with inner rage serum from oscorp and it divided into 2 unstopple forces venom and carnage.

When are people going to learn that spin-offs don't work? I literally can't think of a single successful spin-off from a successful franchise. Oh except Caravan Of Courage: The Ewok Adventure. That was frickin' awesome. Neechawawa!
