Film School Rejects: Ugetsu

Ugetsu didn't hit me so hard as I watching it, but shortly afterward, as it all started to sink in, I was really blown away. That shot near the end (no spoiler alert) when the camera prowls through the house, goes outside, and comes back in is virtuosic! Mizoguchi, a longtime favorite of the French Cahiers crowd, is due to get his just dessert one of these days. I didn't realize so little of his stuff was available, or I would've made a greater effort to attend the recent retrospective in NY. Whoops.

It honestly took me a little bit to get into it, but it kind of hit me all of a sudden, and I was really affected by it. That shot you're talking about is phenomenal, all of the cinematography is in this film. I think it was Godard that said Mizoguchi was one of the greatest of all directors. Hopefully, Criterion will keep up the good work and put more of his stuff out there.
