So...Moby Dick without all the elements that make it a classic, emotional tale that hits at the very core of humanity? Sounds fantastic! We can shelve it next to Troy in the rental store.

I think it's troubling right off the bat if Cooper thinks that an action-adventure revenge story is at "the core" of Moby Dick. That's actually just the framing device. The core of Moby Dick is a story about a man's obsession with failure, perfection and trying to become a living God by killing the one thing that proves dominant over him - a tragic flaw that leads to his downfall in the end.

Wake me up when they decide to make The Old Man in the Sea, but decide that the main character needs to be in his late 20s so that he's more relatable to the target market.

This is sickening. I hope they utterly fail. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, seeing that idiots in Hollywood have no clue how to appreciate a thought provoking story any more. I mean, they seriously think that Ahab would be better off as a charismatic good guy with leadership qualities. That's plain stupid. Ahab is the center piece of Moby Dick. And they want to change that? What? I love action as much as the next guy, but I think the pathetic people behind this movie need to take pointers from better movies helmed by better directors. Like Chris Nolan's "The Dark Night". An epic thought provoking film as well as a masterwork of exciting action. "Gladiator", "Braveheart", "Apocalypto", "The Departed". All great films with something legitimate to say, but at the same time, they were exciting enough to attract a large audience. I think the real problem is the way movie companies approach a story like Moby Dick. They think the only way to adapt it is to make it an episodic epic that spans three hours. If they were smart and they understood the material they would know this isn't true. They would know that the bulk of the action takes place in the last hundred pages. The story should take place there. During the last couple of chapters. And the characters would all be fully realized within this two hour tops movie. At the same time, there would be endless rousing action and special effects. Audiences would be on your side for the action and critics would be on your side for the drama and characterization.
