Film School Rejects: The Watchmen Lawsuit: A Tale of Two Letters

Someone needs to stand up to that bully called Fox! This looks like a job for..? Truly they are in the right and Fox is only whining like little babies. They wouldnt be doing this if it was a straight-to-dvd release would they?

Fox could have stepped in and asserted their rights any time during pre-production or production. They only made noise when they saw it has the potential to be a blockbuster. Execs at Fox can't play dumb and say they had no idea it was in development at WB until the release became iminent. WB should fight it on principle, but due to my entirely selfish motives, I think they should just offer Fox a cut of take for better or worse. Better, presumably, due to the stink this lawsuit has raised.

Sorry to be a buzzkill, but Fox asserting its rights only when they see a possible blockbuster makes them assholes. It doesn't make them wrong.

Turnaround is a vicious loophole, but it's still a legal point. Fox is well within their rights. Even if that makes them jerks.

That's right. It is definitely not a cool thing to do, but it is their right to do it. Now the best thing for Warner Bros. to do is bite the bulllet, pay up and get the movie out so the fans, the true victims of it all, can see this story on-screen.

The following is a transcription of a conversation Fox had with it's attorney over the Watchmen property very, VERY recently.

Fox - "Wow. This Watchmen movie is gonna be big for Warner Bros. Good for them!"

Attorney - "Um, Fox, you actually have the rights to make a movie based on Watchmen."

Fox - "I do? Really? Since when?"

Attorney - "Since the early 1990s, sir."

Fox - "Hmm. Must have forgotten about it. What's Watchmen about, again?"

Bingo that is more then likely the common sense they have at Fox, this whole lawsuit is just Fox trying to get a cut out of a for sure cash cow movie. Watch it turn up in a few years or so that Fox is lying about the whole thing (of them still having rights to the watchmen)

Yet another reason to give 2 letters to Fox... F.U.

First I need to simply get a couple words off my chest. FUCK FOX.
Now that that's out of the way I believe that the current legal situation is another example of a gargantuan movie studio once again taking advantage of a film project that has the potential to truly amaze its fans, and attempting to toss it into the shitter if the project doesn't directly benefit them. I understand that ideally, this film will see the light of day no matter what the legal outcome, however that does not mean that the loophole that is currently being exploited by Fox is in any way just. Especially after the incredible amount of resources that Warner Bros. has already invested into the project. While I know that it is not a real legal possibility, this is how I would personally love for the dispute to be settled: In exchange for half the money that WB has already shelled out, and/or still plans to shell out; Fox may purchase 50% of the rights to the movie. Furthermore, Warner Bros. may retain the right of creative control over the movie. However, Fox will be entitled to half the movie's gross earnings.
It's not perfect, but its a hell of a lot better than a multi-million dollar version of a schoolyard bully looking for lunchmoney.
