Film School Rejects: The Top Ten Oscar Contenders for 2008

  • Alex (FirstShowing.net) · 1 year ago
WHOA! Wall-E! I mean, hell yea, I would've said that myself, but Neil actually predicting that Wall-E will be a big Oscar contender - that's huge news! :)

Hell yea it will win! And with Ratatouille getting nominated for MORE than just animation this year, I'm hoping that Wall-E gets nominated for the sound categories, maybe even screenplay, who knows?! Go Neil!

As for the rest of these - hell yea, 2008 looks awesome, I can't wait (for these to start hitting theaters)!!

I hate Steven Soderbergh. His vision for the future of film makes me want to vomit. I hope he wins nothing.

Brad Pitt is starting to look like Karl Malone now, plunging himself into these Oscar bait roles ...as if to win something before its too late

"City of God" Director Franco Meirelles' "Blindness" is due out in late August, starring Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, and Gael Garcia Bernal

Anything DiCaprio does I will see. He's been granted that right after the Departed. Is "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" coming out this year? That's sure to be Oscar bait as well, seeing as all of Scorsese/DiCaprio movies have garnered, what, close to 30 Oscar noms?

Why do people hate Soderbergh so much? Hey, Fure, what is his vision for the future of
film? The last I heard, he was just experimenting with different methods of delivery. Does
that really want to make you vomit? Seriously? You love seeing movies in theaters with
audiences who, more often than not, couldn't care less about the story passing before
    their eyes?

I'm just wondering. I hear a lot of hate directed at Soderbergh online and I can't figure
out why. He's just plying his trade. Maybe there's some jealousy brewing in comments
like that. I don't mean yours, specifically, Fure, but in general.

Anyway, this looks like a good list of films.

I think it's gonna be a big year for Brad Pitt. A Coen's movie and a Fincher movie...he might be looking at that elusive Oscar.

I think Soderbergh is a hero. Anyone that claims to "hate" him or his work is just jealous. He has created something in nearly every genre imaginable--writing, producing, directing, shooting, editing--come on, how can you not respect that? Sex, Lies, and Videotape, Out of Sight, Ocean's 11, Full Frontal, Solaris, and Traffic are all incredibly well-crafted films.

The same goes for Rodriguez. You just can't deny that these guys are DOING it. Regardless of your opinions of the end-product, the fact that there are people this involved in the process and are finding a way to make it work with all odds against them...it's incredible.

We should be so lucky to live in an age where filmmaking like this is possible, and we should thank people like Soderbergh and Rodriguez for having the guts to do it the way they do.

I'm sorry, Neil, but this list, for the most part, failed.
