Film School Rejects: The Seven Greatest Movies with Cop Out Endings

  • 790 · 1 year ago
    Just FYI:
In the Original "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" at the end they arrive back to earth 100 Billion years in the past. Before mankind.

And then discover that mankind was left behind on a spaceship that eventually crashes on Earth. (Dooming the Earth forever).

I'm sure Douglas Adams wanted to do that but because of time constrants he couldn't.

The original BBC version is on dvd I highly reccomend it.

"BPatPoA (as I’ve cleverly shortened it) "

Getting the initials right would have been more clever.

"Cop Out #2 is waiting on her heels as the Good Witch explains that she’s had the power to go home…the whole time!"

That's not a cop out; it's a metaphor. The characters didn't need the Wizard (God) to bring them happiness. They all had the power within themselves the whole time.

Jurassic Park? You've gone too far Cole. You clearly have no respect for dinosaurs. That is what every 12 year old in the theater wanted - T-Rex whipping dinosaur ass. Brilliant! Though I still haven't forgiven you for calling "Triceratops" a 'tri-horn.' You'll rue this day.

El Bicho is right. It's like Tony Danza in Angels in the Outfield. He didn't NEED the Angels to be great, just to show him the way...

Also when do they make out in Prisoner of Azkaban? I totally missed that.

    @ El Bicho

Just because it's a metaphor doesn't mean it's not a cop out. And it's not a very good metaphor: You don't need God to make you happy, you just need sparkly shoes? What are we teaching our children?

I also have little regard for accurate initials, but, yeah, duly noted and changed.

    @ Fure

    I rue most days.

Just a quick Correct, By Martin you mean Arthur Dent right?

    Rofl, well done.
But two of them I find a bit unfair. In Harry Potter, during the whole film Hermione frequently appears at places where she has not been the moment before, Ron usually being the one to pick up on it. It was done a bit dodgily in the movie though, in the book it's explained a lot better.
And secondly the Jurassic Park one, on the DVD there is a making-of in which Spielberg describes exactly the scene you mentioned above. They had some sketches of the raptors simply being entangled in the skeletons in the visitors centre to start with, which they decided seemed a bit cheap. Plus they wanted to give the T-Rex a proper finale, so he could scream so loud that the banner comes down.
Fully agree with the rest of them though, as far as i've seen them, for some reason i never got round to watching shakespaere in love, maybe i shall give it s try...
Thx for 10 minutes of fun and the chance to add my two pennies

While the ending of Shakespeare in Love is definitely a Deus ex Machina, it shouldn't be
considered a cop-out. Having a Royal show up at the end to make everything right is the
way Shakespeare himself ended several of his comedies. It was the perfect ending for a
    comedy about Shakespeare.

    Ah, well done.

    @ Kurth

Had they introduced the Time Turner early on, it wouldn't have been a cop out, and while I'm all for a huge T-Rex send off, it's still a cop out.

Anyone see the US version of "The Vanishing".
Total cop out ending compared to the UK version.

whats the difference from cop-out to cheesy?
  • Tron · 1 year ago
For Dodgeball, the filmmakers were forced by the studio to do that. Originally (its on the DVD) Dwight wins and thats the end. Its a story of the "underdog" and Dwight is actually the underdog. he's the one who was fat, got into shape and opened a successful gym. Peter is a lazy bum who deserves nothing. That was the twist and why it was called "A True Underdog Story." Unfortunately dumb America didn't like it and during test screenings they were forced to change it. That's why during the credits we see Ben Stiller in a fat suit and says something along the lines of "America doesn't like complexity in their films! They just want to be entertained!" The movie, while still very underrated, would have been such a better film if the original twist had been left in. Unfortunately, America is dumb

T-Rex is not a cop out! It is nature! Mother Nature!
  • D-Rock · 1 year ago
    Tron,

First off, there is no character in Dodgeball named "Dwight", is name is WHITE Goodman. He even spells it at one point in the movie "I'm White, W H I T...E", so this mistake is slightly inexcusable.

I also watched the "original ending" on the DVD, and while it is definitely more shocking and possibly more fitting, it just felt like a big middle finger to the audience. I thought the new editing, while sappy, was just more fun and fit better with the rest of the movie. Plus, how can you bag on a movie that openly admits to using Deux ex Machina?

    Signed,
    Your Superior

In the same scenario as Superman and Azkaban ... Galaxy Quest copt out with the push of a button and time is reversed 7 seconds ... lame
  • D-Rock · 1 year ago
In Galaxy Quest it was the Omega-13 which sent everything back THIRTEEN seconds. I have no clue where you pulled seven from...you're lame

I must admit that the brutal blood soaked French flick Haute Tension (High Tension) was scaring the shit out of me until the end, with a pointless "twist" that left me feeling cheated.

Actually, in POA, Ron makes several comments about Hermione just "showing up" out of nowhere and how she it taking too many classes for one person (two or three being at the same time). Also in at least one point of the film, you can SEE the Time Turner around her neck. I believe it's during the introduction of the hippogriff. Not a complete cop-out, but done much better in the book.
