Film School Rejects: The Princess and the Frog: Controversy or Innocence?

  • violadarby · 3 months ago
I am African American and I don't see anything wrong with this movie, The title or the name of the princess. I love it love it love it. My little girls can't wait for it to come out. The setting of the movie fits. You know Vodoo, New Orleans if people have a problem with it then would they have rather it been a black princess from Haiti where they do still practice vodoo. You should ask the critics dothey have another way to change a prince to a frog with out using vodoo, black magic or what ever? If not they should shut up.
  • BeautyistheBeast · 6 months ago
oh my god all of you who think the movie is racist are very ignorant, first it's not racist and the guy is not white i repeat THE GUY IS NOT WHITE!!!! so not only should we be proud that there is a black princess but also be proud it's not a white prince. As far as the other movies like mulan go i'm sure little girls that were not chinese wanted to be mulan and get saved by the chinese guy so shut your mouths people someones always looking for something to bitch about, your children just want to watch a good cartoon is that so damn bad? and lastly, the whole things about her being a chambermaid and people getting offended by it..... uuhhh..... cinderella was practically a slave, and mulan wasn't even rich, Belle was just one of those french village people, and well shoul i be offended??? no, you know why? cause they are classics just like this movie right here will be! soo to all of you that bitch get your shit straight before you talk

Once again, the public has gotten uptight over little things.
  • Rachel · 10 months ago
I agreed with you somewhat there, but you have to look at it from their point of view. People are critiquing this movie mostly because it is the first sign of victory of a long awaited battle and they just want it to be perfect. And Disney has been known to have very racist undertones in their cartoons, and whether people agreed with it or not cartoons show just as much social and political statement as any other media.
  • JJ · 6 days ago
Please are you for real? All these race baiters need to take a laxative...it's ridiculous that they had to make all these concessions in the first place...I mean should I be upset at how Cinderalla was treated? I mean it's a story not a diatribe! Please get a life and leave your racist ideas at home....it goes both ways!
  • berespectful · 1 week ago
I think people do not really understand how stereotypes have hurt Black people. In addition, Disney tends to be ethnocentric at best. They should have hired someone who had more knowledge about African Americans. But they don't care which means they continue their stereotypes on purpose; therefore, they are racist.
  • Taiya · 1 year ago
I think people need to calm down. Seriously dudes chill. Disney has made some pretty bad screw ups but I dont think they will sink their battleship on purpose. Disney has learned from past mistakes and I think this is a steep towards that. As for crocidile sidekick, i think that would be neat. Nice change from the demented crocks from rescuers. that = X_X
  • BlackPrincessMelis · 1 year ago
Oh, people are too uptight for fucksakes. It's about time Disney had a black princess. Do they have to complain about everything! JFC!
  • PRican · 1 year ago
I think that the concerns named at good concerns given that this is new territory for Disney and while I loved Aladdin and enjoyed Pocahontas...well those movies had a few ethnic issues. So I wouldn't call all critics "uptight".

I think changing the name from Maddie (The complaints I read noted that Maddie sounds a bit too similar to "Mammy"...and oh do we hate that stereotype) to Tiana is a good change. Tiana not only sounds more "ethnic" but also more regal and calls the image of a tiara, perfect for a princess.

I did not have a problem with title "The Frog Princess". I think that they were REALLY reaching for something to dislike with this gripe. But I do like the change of title though.

I doubt that any intentional racist statements will be made in the film. But there will be criticism, as seen with Aladdin. But overall, despite my slight apprehension, this is promising and damn it...these stills are GORGEOUS!

    So good luck to Disney!
  • Windstorm · 1 year ago
The Princess and the Frog will be a wonderful movie no matter what anyone says. And I think that Princess Tiana is simpbly gorgeous! I can't wait for the film's release in Christmas of 2009!
  • Dlawso · 1 year ago
I think that whatever Disney Studios or anyone else creates will always be roughly judged by people who don't really understand the time and effort it takes to complete such a masterpiece. I think people have the instinct to automatically "hate" or "defend themselves" over something new, or worse, pretend that they know what they are talking about. The only ones who can truly appreciate a piece for what it is are the ones who have gotten through a similar process, or understand what it takes to make it. The public is extremely harsh, maybe even impossible to please.
  • Shannon · 1 year ago
I am African-American and truthfully...I can't wait! I'm 20 and my only complaint is that I wish that they would have come out with this moive when I was younger! As for the title, I think it is referencing the frog she has to kiss that eventually becomes her prince.
  • sskanye · 6 days ago
I feel that you are side glancing all the issues of sterotypes in the movie..At first I was excited that there was actually a black princess, because the closest ethnic one was Jasmine, but look at how the characters act. I feel as if they are degrading the Black community, saying that we all act like this..
  • Vett · 11 months ago
I am African-American female, who longed to see postive fairy tale type images of an African-American young lady. I must say however, I was IMMEDIATELY taken aback by the title The FROG PRINCESS. Ok, just think of the titles, CINDERELLA, Sleeping BEAUTY, POCAHONTAS, ALLADIN, all sound fantastical, fun and light. (And who did "the Princess and the Pea? Was it Disney) Anyway, she wasn't called THE PEA PRINCESS. Uggh. The title THE FROG PRINCESS just didn't sound in any way beautiul, fun, glamorous soft or light. It sounds hard. Like dang. And then, of all the beautiful names in the culture - uh, MADDIE?? Dang. Kudos to Disney for listening. I've always enjoyed Disney movies and expect that I will continue to do so. Please everyone, don't be so quick to assume how others SHOULD feel. Unless you've walked in their shoes...
  • Haute_Mama · 2 weeks ago
For your information, Cinderella was meant to be taunting because she worked in the cinders all day and was always dirty. Pocahontas was the woman's actual name and Aladdin is the name of Princess Jasmine's boyfriend. I see no issues with The Frog Princess because, well, she does turn into a frog. Come on people, why let yourself get so sensitive?
  • Valerie · 11 months ago
I've seen the trailer to this movie and I'm not offended (I'm an African-American female). I can't wait to see it. I've always loved the Disney animated movies since I was a kid. I watch them for pure entertainment. People can be sure of this...there will always be criticism.
  • Aerii · 11 months ago
Movie should be called Frog Prince, like the story it was based off.

Bad decisions by Disney. Am I the only one who misses the old princesses? New Orleans is boring.
  • * * * · 11 months ago
What is wrong with the prince being black?? Why MUST he be anything but?? I don't want my daughter growing up with fantasies of a white guy "rescuing" her. It kind of seems that the "prince" in Disney movies is usually white though, even with the other "ethnic" "princesess". I was very excited about the movie until I found out that little tid bit...

Religiously and due to the negative connections most people make with it I think the voo doo thing is a bit much as well. Just stick to regular magic and it would've been just fine.

Other than those two things I would've been over joyed to see the movie.
  • steve · 8 months ago
The prince is not black he comes from a fictional coutry
  • Jonika · 6 months ago
I heard the prince is Indian... The "voodoo thing" really? like every other Disney movie hasn't blown up the little characteristics of the princesses hometown? You can't ignore that New Orleans makes a big deal out of the voodoo scene, just because Disney doesn't get all historic and delve into the Diaspora. Come on its a kids movie.
  • Monique · 6 months ago
First of all, you saying that you don't want you daughter growing up with fantasies of a white guy rescuing her makes you sound ridiculously racist. As long as your daughter grows up knowing how a man should treat her, no matter the race, is what you should want.

Secondly :Is there ever "regular magic?" What exactly do you mean by "regular magic." Nothing is "regular" in a Disney movie. Animals talking, people flying with or without a carpet, pumpkins changing into carriages, a kiss that pretty much brings you back from the dead. Tell me what is "regular" about those things. Don't answer, because nothing is regular about it. They are all a part of this fantasy world that usually only children or open minded individuals enjoy. Voodoo is a way of life. It can't be ignored just because people like yourself don't agree with it. A Disney movie HAS to have some sort of magic and it turns out that voodoo has yet to be touched upon. There are certain things that NEED to be brought up so that people are informed in a more positive way.
And as for New Orleans. I'd like it if people stopped thinking about Hurricane Katrina and started thinking about how historical the place is. Yes, we can't ignore the fact that the city was destroyed. But, its history wasn't. Aren't we working on rebuilding and bringing it back? If that's the case, we shouldn't be complaining about it getting recognition in a movie.
  • AK2009 · 10 months ago
Ashley Demma, all of your points are baseless, because all those movies you named were meant to have a Eurocentric point of view. The Princess and the Frog movie will be no different, it will have an Eurocentric point of view just like every Disney movie.

Case in point why is a white man playing the role as the prince (fog)?

A Black man has never played the love interest in an Disney movie to a white woman, because white people don't want their children thinking that a black person is a prized catch.
  • Quel · 5 months ago
Ak2009 you are on point! Yes, say that.
  • Kevin McFadden · 10 months ago
From what I have read, the Prince is not of African-American descent, but is actually Latino. If o, would this mark the first time that disney has paired an (ahem) interracial couple in one of it's animated films other than Pocahantus - which was not a fairy tale. I am not a racist, however, I do wonder if the are trying to kill two birds with one stone. To date, there have been no latino animations out of the disney camp. Again, if this is true, I am sure that a lot of African-Americans would be upset at not pairing the main character with someone of the same race. COMMENTS ANONE!
  • Nat · 10 months ago
Why does it even matter what color any of the characters of Disney movies are? I would still watch them if they were all blue.

And AK2009, why would you say that "white people don't want their children thinking that a black person is a prized catch."? That isn't even true, it's an awful stereotype.
  • Pinksalmon77 · 5 months ago
I totally agree that whoever said that was being horribly stereotypical. I'm biracial (my mother white, my father black) so this movie has especially affected me in a wonderfully good way. We NEVER see interracial couples in animated shows or movies (pocahontas is an exception, i'll admit) we had the Proud Family tv series. which showcased a black family. There have been numerous tv series that showcase black families. But I have NEVER encountered one that revolved around the lives of an interracial family. Never. Please just let me enjoy this movie. It kills me that so many black people are so upset about this movie. No wonder disney has been so afraid to make one until now. It's disgraceful the way ppl are acting. They say that they think their young black sons should have a role model to look up to. Well what about President Obama?! He's definitely a black man the young boys should look up to! Just let us young, black women revel in the fact that we now have an amazing black Disney princess! This movie represents the fact that love is love. So please just take it for what it is. It's a FANTASY. It's not real life, it's not trying to make a statement. It just tears me up that people have to freak out so much about a Disney animated movie. It's taking away the magic that they have held for me since I was a little girl who dreamed about being a princess, even though I was half-white, half-black and my parents suffered discrimination everyday because of their happiness together. Just don't take the magic away...please.
  • Eve · 10 months ago
    I completely agree with "Nat".
I am an 18 year old redhead and have always been attracted to black guys. My boyfriend is Jamaican and we've been together for over a year.
Even though I don't think it matters AT ALL what 'color' the prince is, I'm actually happy that the princess is black and the prince is white because we need to see more support for interacial couples out there in the world. I'm excited that they've brought out this kind of movie and plus, it's JUST A CARTOON guys.
  • Julie · 10 months ago
Im just glad I will be eventually able to go out and buy my daughter a Disney Princess Doll that actually looks like her, Black with beautiful big eyes and curly dark hair!!!! Im sick of not being able to buy toys that don't resemble her or represent her ethnicity.........Disney its about time...just hope they get it right!!!
  • Rae · 10 months ago
Disney is not racist, they are stereotypical. While neither is a good thing, it makes the overall movie more approachable by its younger, more simplistic audience.
  • cass · 10 months ago
eh. i'm sure the movie is going to upset someone for some reason. but honestly, it isn't going to be the children. they aren't going to be picking the movie apart looking for a reason to be offended.
  • thefrogprincess · 10 months ago
The original title was The Frog Princess because the movie is based on the novel The Frog Princess.
  • thefrogprincess · 10 months ago
Guys, Disney is only doing this so people won't point fingers at them and call them racist. They are doing exactly what every person on this planet does. They aere trying to protect themselves from people who have nothing better to do than call innocent people racist.
  • Hahaha · 7 months ago
    Innocent! That was funny, really.
  • mamabear3 · 4 months ago
Oh Please, get your head out of the clouds...do you have any idea what institutional racism is?
  • thefrogprincess · 10 months ago
There is only one problem with that. The movie isn't based on The Frog Prince. It is based on The Frog Princess by E. D. Baker. If you don't believe me, you can e-mail her and ask.
  • semioldguy · 10 months ago
I am really excited about the return to an animated musical and the return to 2D hand drawn animation. I think that is a really good move by Disney it that is what I miss most from their films.
  • AblackPrincess · 9 months ago
I'm also very excited that this movie is coming out. There is nothing wrong with the prince not being black. In all honesty I think more African American women should look outside of just their race for love (I am African American). I'm glad there is finally a truthfully black princess (I actually considered Akidladesh from Journey to Atlantis black she reminded me of Storm but I digress) I was offended that out of all the animated movies Disney made in the past, when they got to Africa it was about animals (no offense Lion King was one of my favorite movies but come on). I like most of Disney movies and as someone pointed out anyway there are going to be ethnic mistakes but i think they will do a good job they are already making some changes based on request and feedback they have received.

And about the voodoo thing magic is magic which is both wrong but its also a theme in all Disney movies. Voodoo is a prominent form of witchcraft in that part of the country, when you go to visit its everywhere being sold and marketed so get over this. in Aladdin it was Genie magic, in the Little Mermaid it was Sea witch voodoo magic imo, in Cinderella it was Fairy Godmother chanting spells magic and so on and so forth. Disney is just trying to diversify its magic handbook.

Look I am happy that Disney is finally going to have a african american princesss, but honestly who cares if she's white , black asian or whatever I have loved all of the disney princessess of the past .
  • Arc · 7 months ago
you should care because you never see a princess of color on the cloths racks at walmart, target etc. When my brown skinned daughter (3) is asked what a princess looks like all she has to point to is snow white, sleeping beauty or cinderella and I immediately have to correct her and say you are a princess too . Im very glad to a princess of color disney thank you its about time. As far as the prince goes I would have liked to have seen a non European looking guy (just for a change of pace) but hey one out of two isnt bad i guess.
  • Ed T · 9 months ago
Okay sooo....wow...look, animation is animation. The whole racist thing...there really is NO PLEASIN, some ppl get offended by EVRY little thing...really. Just be happy that there is a black "princess" being added to the list of disney princesses. .. Look did the arabs, the native americans, or asians(me being chinese n all) complain about the movies when they were IN production...? Not really.(Friend's sister was model for Pochantas) Yes they did raise some issues after, but be glad that Disney isn't producing(I am) JUST european fairytales(PS ppl...Disney isn't racist, they just used what materials were well known to the public overall - western european stories). they have progressed, and so LEAVE a story BE!..
As for the name and other changes...Psah... NO need. really? its the 1930's, Personally? I like Maddie - fits the era. Tiana???...and not being a chambermaid? c''mon Cinderella a WHITE girl was one...Look while we're at it might as well be like the Japanese and rewrite history right? sterilize it as it were to suit today's sensibilities....really? Yes the name and position etc.. is demeaning and such...but without hardships the ending then what? we're watching an animated version of J-Lo's "Maid in Manhattan"...Yawn bore...I predict with more appeasements this will be a flop.. ever heard of "too many cooks spoiled the soup"..? .yeah well it applies here. I fully support the ORIGINAL artistic vision the director has(had)...

PS has ANYONE who is complaining about the movie, voodoo, EVER considered that this might BOOST New Orleans tourism business and help revive/rebuild the community...? Sheesh...

i just watched the trailer on the disney website. it is very short. it feature tiana trying to kiss the frog on the lips. that is not the bad part. it is the half unentelligble firefly that has only four teeth in his mouth that makes me think that this movie is going to be nothing but a new blackface.
  • meg · 8 months ago
The firefly is not black he's french cajun!!!
  • Shelli · 8 months ago
I am Caucasian. I think it is great that Disney is finally making a movie with a Black princess. I know how much some of the daughters of my friends and family members love Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty, etc. I'm sure many little Black girls will feel just as excited as they do when they finally see a princess that looks like them.

I am, however, upset that Disney has chosen a traditional European fairy tale in which to feature their first Black princess. The Princess and the Frog is none other then a retitled version of an old story called The Frog Prince. It was written by a Caucasian with Caucasian characters in mind.

When Disney made the movie Mulan, based on an old Chinese story, they never changed the story so they could use a Caucasian as the main character. Disney also never drew a Caucasian character to play Pocahontas. Why alter a tradtional European fairy tale, so a Black character can play its lead?

Disney should have chosen a traditional African fairy tale in which to feature a Black princess, so the story would remain authentically true.
  • FutureDisneyAnimator · 1 month ago
Look Disney TRIED to please everyone with this movie, but when you think about it the people of Disney are artists and have worked really really hard to get to be where they are. And its people like you who are ruining their artist visions. So they changed the story, so did who ever wrote the version of the Frog Prince you're talking about, because the oringal storytellers were the Grimm Brothers and they were German. So, that is just what this movie is, the Disney version, just like they have done for every other movie they've made.
  • ladyjane11 · 8 months ago
(I'm a white 19 year old American girl)
Part of me says "color shouldn't really matter, I honestly don't register things like 'Hey, a black/Asian/Inuit/Middle Eastern/etc. character!' People are people."
But the more realistic side of me knows that there is a huge difference between having a white princess and a black princess, in American film especially. If only the years of horrible treatment to blacks in America never occurred, this wouldn't be such a big issue. This event (having a black princess) isn't only about diversification of products and giving a positive role model that looks more like young black girls/women (though that part is good!). It is also land-marking a triumph in the continuous change of the mindsets of, basically, people who still see blacks on a lower social and even sometimes economical level. A lot of times this mindset isn't intentionally racist/prejudice/stereotypical -- it's just an old, incorrect viewpoint from past generations that has continued to live on.
A black Disney princess is sort of like having a black president. Like, Obama being black doesn't make him any more or less of a president, but it's just an awesome thing to get over that. Even Republicans [should] at least rejoice that America has hurtled race as an issue (well, a deciding issue) in electing a Commander and Chief. (Not that this really matters: I'm neither a Republican nor Democrat, btw. Politics piss me off with all the negativity and lies. I'm just too impatient to search through it.)

    Issues:
-Maddie vs. Tiana -- I can see how the name "Maddie" is both historically accurate and stereotypical/insensitive. It's like a generic black girl name from that time frame. I don't really like "Tiana" either, but that's just a personal preference. Just like how I'm not a fan of "Giselle." Bleh. Anyway.
-Locale -- I disagree with the whole point of view of New Orleans being a bad locale for the movie. Before Katrina, many people's thoughts turned to the French Quarter and Cajun culture when thinking of New Orleans (some people still think of that, not just the hurricane!). I think the Jazz Age is also great (fun music, great colors and fashion). I've had my fill of medieval-esque era fairy tales which are usually VERY historically inaccurate (marrying for love? Yea, right.).
-The prince -- I think it would be better if he were black. Like, let's not stop at just a black princess, how about a black couple. Latino would be better than white, though I am a fan of the interracial aspects... :)
Oh, and when I saw that firefly, I did think it was pretty bad. But hopefully kids will just see that as a dopey firefly instead of anything else.
-Title -- Okay, if it was based after a story titled "The Frog Princess", then I feel like it that should have been fine, but I doubt many people would know that fact offhand (I myself thought it was based after "The Frog Prince") so I understand how it makes the Princess sound like she's a frog.
-Voodoo -- Heck, I'm excited to learn more about it! Disney has already semi-introduced it with Tia Dalma (sp?) in Pirates of the Caribbean II & III, and I didn't hear anyone respond to that use of Voodoo with distaste. I trust that Disney will touch upon Voodoo with good taste (they treated Chinese culture and American Indian culture respectfully in Mulan and Pocahontas, respectively). And it's not like Voodoo is being brought up in some random place like Boston. It's New Orleans! Like someone mentioned, there's lots of Voodoo shops and places there!

Haha, I done with my [long] spiel.
I just wish people would realize that organizations like BET, etc. and individuals are not bringing up sensitivity to race issues for no reason. Racism is not dead, unfortunately and white people are usually either the last to find such out or /are/ the racists. Lame.

I think that Disney is trying! Finally they are taking a chance and getting into the 21st century! I l love Tiana! As a 22 year old black woman I have been waiting for a black princess. As a native and lifetime resident of Louisiana I am excited that someone is taking the spotlight away from the devestation caused by Katrina. People will have the chance to see the beauty of this city and state! As for the Cajun firefly...I love the accent. Could they have given him more teeth? Yes but its an animated movie for kids!!!! They will think its funny, its a good way to introduce another culture and accent to them. Overall, good work Disney. I will be attending the premire with my two gorgeous brown skinned nieces!

Only animators will be able to fully understand what this movie means, yes there is finally a black princess, but what is really important is the fact that hand drawn animation is still alive!!! The art work to this movie looks fantastic, something only Disney could have done.

Is anyone really even upset about this? I think the people that are upset are just getting more attention that what is really necessary. Someone is always going to be upset. Disney shouldn't have changed anything for anyone. They'll never make everyone happy. The media is just giving an inproportionate amount of attention to dissenters.
  • Chichi · 7 months ago
It seems that a lot of people don't understand what the uproar is about with this movie. Quite a number of you are stating that race shouldn't be important, and why should it matter if the prince is white or non black--it's all about being equal and harmonious right? In fact some believe the people that are complaining about a white prince are the real racists, because they wouldn't complain in the first place. Wrong. Race is important. Why is it that down the line of the Disney princesses (excluding Pocohontas) that their costars or counterparts were of the same race? Why all of a sudden when it comes to the black princess that Disney wants to change it up? It would makes sense to follow the Disney formula or blue print. I tell you why they changed the scheme of things because Disney wanted to send a message.
  • Chichi · 7 months ago
You know what that message is? It is not practical for a black woman and black man relationship to exist. It is not the norm; therefore, a black woman would have to look elsewhere for love for her prince. In addition it is also saying that a black man could never be a prince or atleast a prince to a black woman. Yes we love interracial relationships, but why is it that the first black princess has to compromise herself to find love. It would make more sense for a white princess to have an interracial relationship first since we've already seen her have her white prince. Yes I am glad that Disney thought to have a black princess, but I am certainly not thankful. If they're going to have a black princess they should present it in the right way. Also just like how I want my daughter to be able to identify with a princess, I want the same for my son. You mean to tell me that as a young black man that he can't have someone to identify with and that he can't be a prince.

Well, it would make more sense to have a black princess first, because lets face it, how many little boys do you see wanting to be prince Eric or the princes from the other disney movies (in fact, I don't recall names for those princes in movies like Cinderella and Snow White). Also I really don't think Disney was trying to say its not practical for a black woman and man to have a relationship, or that a black man couldn't be a prince. As someone said before, They were probably just trying to kill two birds with one stone and have the first black princess and first interracial couple at once, and since more girls tend to identify with the princess movies, they made the princess black (also probably for marketing. I don't think I've seen any disney prince merchandise). They were probably trying to kill two birds with one stone, as someone said above, and put the first black princess and first interracial couple in the same movie. (A move i think was good, because they don't exactly come out with a new hand drawn film every year) I've seen tons and tons of tv shows and cartoons that focuse on all black families and very few (if any) interracial ones, so I'm glad they did this. Although, frankly, I would have gone to see this even if the princess was purple. The movie looks like it will be good, and if we don't dissect it too much, maybe it will be.

Disney wanted to send a message and the message that is implied is that it is not practical for a black woman and a black man's relationship to exist. It is not the norm; therefore, a black woman would have to look elsewhere for love for her prince. In addition it is also saying that a blackman could neve be a prince or atleast to a black woman. Yes we love interracial relationships, but why is it that the FIRST ( If it was the 2nd or 3rd no problem) has to comporomise herself to find love. I'm glad that Disney thought to have a black princess, but I am certainly not GRATEFUL.
  • McKenzie · 7 months ago
I think it's great they're pairing an interracial couple together, again. And maybe Disney didn't get on this sooner because of all the criticism it would receive, after all it is, unfortunately, a touchy subject. But I think for the most part Disney is going to do well with this movie.

And when it comes to voodoo maybe it's just getting back to the roots of African Americans, especially in New Orleans. After all, in Pocahontas they had a lot about spirits, especially nature having spirits which is some thing the Native American culture embraces. Isn't that the same thing? Most white fairy tales are based around European ideas. For instance the magic- dragons, fairy godmothers, etc. Wouldn't that be whites going back to their roots? Maybe they thought it would be offensive for movie featuring a black princess to be based on European magic. Or maybe they didn't even mean any thing by it.

As for the title. The Princess and the Frog is definitely more fitting. And I rather like the name Maddie. I think it's adorable. But, that's just me. Regardless, I'm looking forward to Tiana being our newest addition to the Disney Princesses.

What's burns me up about all this is the the African-American community has been harping at Disney for years about them never having a black princess. Is it any wonder that they haven't?? Disney knows as well as anyone that once they introduce a black main character that they will almost have no room to develop the character unless it falls within strict acceptance of the African Amercian communtiy, or else they'll get slaughtered as they have been lately. All Disney is trying to do is tell a fairy tale!! As far as the title being degrading, it's actually a play on words of The Frog Prince and you'll see why when the movie comes out. It has nothing to do with African Americans being compared to frogs. Get over yourself! Also, the main characters name was Maddy at first because she is supposed to come from an average class family as all good princess stories can attest to. Girl grows up poor and overworked. Girl meets fairy godmother. Girl marries prince and they live happily ever after. It's a story structure that's been used for ages! Disney were just trying to use a common name from the time!
The African American community needs to calm down and realize that not everything is meant as a slight. Disney has just realized that it was high time to have a black lead character (which I agree, should have been done way before this), so instead of being insulted and angry, take it a s a good sign of Disney finally stepping forward. After all if it's true to past Disney movies, the girl gets the prince at the end and lives happily ever after. How can that be bad?
  • Scott · 7 months ago
Disney is trying, they're just further behind the times than they realize.

This board alone shows the still wide gap of racial understanding America faces... an angry African-American community that can't effectively articulate why they're upset to a majority that just wishes - without addressing them - that the complaints would just go away.

Never-mind the minstrel show crows of Dumbo - an unbelievable insult to an entire generation of African Americans - or the fact Disney hopes to re-release their embarrassing Song of the South.

The truth is Disney faces extreme internal politics and creative stagnation, falling stock value and revenues, and a decreasing public interest in their 2D animation. I'm sure they were trying their best whit this, but they could have done better. They could have chosen any story in the world, made the story take place anywhere... it's a cartoon, there's no cost difference in a story set in the Arctic or on the moon... but it doesn't take a marketing genius to know to avoid New Orleans as a story backdrop!

Its about damn time, shameful Disney can do a movie about everything except black people. Maybe if they did this a long time ago and featured more african americans in their work visually people wouldn' t be sensitive. Its hurtful to know it this just happened in 2009. But I'd be saying the same thing 2001. My point is you have to jump the hurdle at some point and waiting this late doesn't help. They should have jumped this a long time ago. Then this movie wouldn't be news. But God bless this event. Times are change for my people. Slowly but surely. Seriously Disney a Hawaiian before an african american. There going to get the usual racist shots. Non african americans you may not understand but they should have done this along time and and if the media featured African Americans more we wouldn't be so sensitive.

Amazing you have a group of people (African) have been on this earth 1-5 million years and some how we don't have any stories.

Being born and raised in New Orleans...Lawd Please!!! It's about time we had a black princess in a Disney Movie. The new title and name of the princess is better for everyone and the color the skin for the prince is all truth, as look at my husband, two children, years of school year books, and family photos. Being black does not always mean dark. We come is several shades and light just happens to be one of them. For crying out loud, the princess is dark!!! Why can't the prince be light???

so i read all of these comments. all of them. and i understand where each side is coming from.

i give disney props. as a current teen, i grew up without a disney princess that looked like me, but i must admit it didnt bother me. i didnt know better. i grew up in a community densely populated by whites, it was normal. but having no one that looked like me to reference was still hard and i say again, way to wake up disney.

did i have a problem with the original title? no, its a title. its not like it said the ugly nego toad princess. its the frog princess, which she turns into. duh. so anyone with that issue needs to chill.

did i have a problem with her name? no. and those of you complaining that it sounds too much like 'mammy', you're looking for something to complain about. you're really stretching your imagination to believe disney is that racist.
  • Dani · 6 months ago
the apparent alligator side kick? what in the world was that supposed to imply? im asking those who made a huge deal about this aspect as well. its a disney movie. disney. singing animals is a given. and when your down in louisiana, guess what, you walk into the marshes and the bayou and you find alligators.

those who had problems with the location, my goodness come on. come on. louisiana, mardi gra, and of course hurrican katrina. did anyone think this wasnt degrading? but reminding us of the granduer that was new orleans. ever think its a tribute to the people who were forever changed?

and the occupation haters? pleeeeease. its disney's claim to fame, the classic almost cliche rags to riches story. if she started out in the palace with money and the guy, we'd be at the 'happily ever after' not the 'once upon a time'
  • Dani · 6 months ago
BUT i know it seems like im takin one side, but i do see the other point of view

why is the opening firefly toothless? really come on now? is this not just reinforcing a hokey, broke down, and ignorant stereotypical black folk the country has seen before? if its not rappers and gold chains its toothless and brainless?

and another thing thats been touched upon quite a bit, the issue of the princes race. while in life i think, go ahead, marry whoever you wanna marry love whoever you wanna love. but there is that tinge, that uncomfortable feeling, with disney portraying an interracial couple for the first time they have a black princess isnt the best idea. there is already the stereotype that black men dont take care of their families, that black men arent responsible, and that black men dont want black women. the reinforcement of this idea by disney isnt exactly what should be conveyed. we need a boost in our community and setting up our disney princess with a latino, is an unnecessary abberation.
  • Dani · 6 months ago
    BUT

i do see the other side.

the toothless fly at the beginning? really? really? was it necessary? must this country be drilled yet again with the image of the ignorant, dirty, and toothless black folk? if its not grills and chains its bayous and no teeth and no brains being portrayed to this country,
  • Dani · 6 months ago
now, the issue that has been touched apon quite a bit by this blog is the issue of the princes race. now although i am all for dating whoever you wanna date, loving whoever you wanna love, and marrying whoever you want to marry, the issue with portraying the first black disney princess with a latino man imposes upon people countless stereotypes. the idea that black men arent good fathers, that black men cant provide, the idea that black men dont want black women. and by pairing up tiana with a latino is giving that idea that, 'yeah give up trying to find a good strong black man,' and i cant condone that. we, the country not just the black community, need a representation of a strong, central, and together black family. not the images of baby mama drama and gang banger boyfriends. but a strong black man rescuing his strong black princess. he needs to be our knight in shining armor.
  • Dani · 6 months ago
all in all i cant judge the movie quite yet, for its just a trailer, nothing set in stone. i'll be buying tiana's tshirts and drawing her pictures and halloween of 2010 my friends and i will be the saucy disney princesses, mulan, jasmine, cinderella, snow white, belle, and finally tiana. so i say support it, because its about time the black community had some disney representation.
  • Rob · 6 months ago
Dani, I think it's narrow minded to think that the black princess should only be rescued by a black prince. That's backwards thinking. I think Disney is being very positive in portraying an interracial relationship. I actually think it would have been racial to have a black prince, effectively saying that a black woman should only be with a black man.

So can everyone see why this subject is so delicate? Why Disney hasn't had a black Princess as of yet? Look at the punishment they're taking!
  • Dani · 4 months ago
true not to say that a black woman can only stay with a black man, however, if disney was so into this idea, why havent they done it before with other princesses? and i also think that is slightly unfair to say that Disney hasnt made a black princess due to the harsh criticism from the black community. can one predict that an uproar would not occur if an interracial cinderella were have evolved? to pin this entirely on the black community is simple hypocritical
  • Daisy · 4 months ago
I don't think that they've said that. But the fact that Disney has not made a black lead heroine or hero until now doesn't surprise me since every time they tried to make a movie with a lead character being from an ethnic race (Arabic, Chinese, Red Indian and Hawaiian), a shitload of controversy would blow up in their faces, no matter what they did and no matter how hard they tried to please people. Now, that doesn't mean that nobody should complain at all or that Disney should ignore all the complaints and make Tiana as stereotypical as they want but we really have to think about whether the parts of the movie people are complaining about really are offensive and degrading to African Americans or just personal nitpicks (somebody could be offended by the fact that Tiana has big lips but if her lips were smaller, somebody might complain about her being 'too white'). I have yet to see a movie in history that has offended absolutely nobody and it looks like that Disney has been made to hold the burden of making such a movie, which is unfair.

YAY!!! I'm so excited. I can't wait for it to come out. Disney is Awesome... After watching the trailor doesn't seem all bad but not all that exciting like all the other princess movies. Can't really judge it til I see the whole movie. As for the race love it, the title like it, the princess love her (though, don't get me wrong, I like her voice its just the way she talks but its ok), the prince/frog love him (I love latino guys <3, I'd love him even if he was asian, caucasian, black, indian, islander, etc. ), storyline... (can't wait to see the movie), where the story takes place is cool, other leading characters the bug not impressed, croc as sidekick is cool, voodoo lady ok (not too many kids are into the voodoo thingy niether are parents not a good catch for children's fairytale)
  • kookiemoonstarz · 6 months ago
um... everything else I guess is ok. Oh and my suggestion for everyone... If you feel in any way, that your ideas are much better than Disney's then please do us all a favor and stop complaining and produce your own movie and see how "not" easy it is to come up with a story of a african american princess that's different from all the other princess movies but still has it's own special new touch that each one brings. Yeah, I didnt think so. Overall, the movie hopefully will be awesome Disney never cease to amaze me, yet, one fact will remain.. I will forever n always love and watch Disney Movies and my children and their children's children and so on til the human race has reached extinction lol will watch and love 'em.

The critic was looking for something to pick apart before even reading it!!
I think this is crazy changing her name because it sound to much like mammy lol I could fall on the floor laughing Does Cinderella, Aurora, or Ariel sound like a name anyone would name a child I don't think so, That is what makes them fairy tails. I do have to say that Maddie is a BEAUTIFUL name and is a very common name(Maddison) I am very happy Disney is making a African American movie. We all know disney has come along way and has opened its eyes to all nationality's from Aladdin to Pocahontas to Mulan and now The Frog Princess opps that's too racy I mean The Princess Frog LOL
Before you start picking apart disney read the book the frog princess!!!!!!!

It's HIGHLY important... Disney has been known for making films and such that paint a certain picture... the BIRDS in Dumbo. It's an important thing for children to grow up and notice others that look like them... rather than look up to a supporting cast... How timely for Disney, while we have a Black president. Past cartoons were degrading to the black culture and menstrol shows were just down right wrong... and for someone to make a film of a culture they should respect it and try not to degrade or mock them in anyway...
After all in countless interviews until he died, D.W. Griffith never understood why blacks didn't like his Birth of a Nation film. He was saddened that they didn't praise him and just deal with his film.
When a race or rather a culture has been the butt of jokes and of mockery for so long, its rightfully so to have your guard up to make sure you are not again tormented by the sterotype of images that will haunt you and the generations that are to follow.

    Not uptight just cautious.
  • SleepyHollow · 5 months ago
Being black im just going to say this and keep it real. I have 3 bi racial people and 1 son of color. My children dont see black and white they see us all as people. They know the difference but they know that love has no color. So black people seriously you need to stop trying to keep the struggle alive and just shut up about it. Find a cause worth fighting for and get a life. Step into reality and stop being filled with hatred from your own insecurities. If you have a problem with race...make the cartoons your darn self. :)
  • Scott · 5 months ago
Recent events show us racism is still deadly active in this country. It important it is to at least pay attention to see if our movies and TV shows are helping people understand each other more or are they helping us understand each other less. Just because you personally don't find it offensive does not mean it does not influence other people's opinions.

I think many are concerned because in the past Disney did show images that showed blacks as less then human, as he apparently believed they were. Maybe they are making up for past wrongs, but with all the marketing money and broadcast brains you think they could have picked a movie that didn't cause ANY complaints. It's not that hard to do!

The reason the use of voodoo is controversial is because its a common black and new orleans stereotype, instead of just having what they usually deem as "magic" in other Disney films. Voodoo is also taboo and is still practiced today. It has a negative connotation to it, like sorcery and doesn't sound as beautiful or acceptable as "magic." For example what do you imagine when you hear "Fairy godmother" in comparison to "voodoo priestess." However I understand that it isn't intended as racist, for true racism in animated Disney films watch older movies such as, Pinocchio, Dumbo and the Jungle Book. Personally the voodoo thing isn't a big deal to me(Its in new orleans, so I kind of expected it), I just know that alot of black people may find it offensive.
I hope that Disney will make a great film and keep in mind of how big of a deal this is. Growing up I remember for Halloween I once went as a Disney princess, and having white children tell me that I can't be Belle from Beauty and the Beast or any Disney Princess because I am black. With this new black princess my little sister and other little girls will see that anyone can be a princess and be exposed to a history or culture other than their own such as Aladdin, Pocahontas, and Mulan. Believe it or not American children are raised with Disney as an integral part of entertainment in their everyday lives.
  • Quel · 5 months ago
It' great to see people excited about Disney's first Black princess. I hope that we see the Black princess and not her as frog for most of the movie. If Disney has her as a frog for most of the movie, the film fails and again Disney stays true to its racists ways. It's important for people to understand the power of images. If you constantly see people who look like you in U.S. media , you might not understand.
  • Marie · 4 months ago
Sheesh. People are always going to complain about something, aren't they? I think the latest gripe was that the Prince is played by a Brazilian and not animated as another African American. What--only same race relationships are acceptable? New Orleans wasn't solely black, you know. And, if we're going to gripe, I'm not positive, but from what I've been able to read, I have the impression that Charlotte La Bouff (however it's spelled), Tiana's bratty diva competition, is white. Hmm. So the only Caucasian influence is spoiled and petty and self absorbed. You know, if the ethnicity of the characters was switched, someone would be up in arms about that depicition. Who's racist now? I know most folks of any ethnicity couldn't care less. They're just trying to live their lives. I have a couple choice words for the extremists, though.
In the end, come on. I have to agree with just about everybody on this board so far--it's a movie, not a social statement. Anything with singing frogs should not be taken in any political or cultural venue. What happened to stories just being told for the heck of it?

I'm so, so happy Disney is returning to the realm of 2D animation. It seems to have so much more LIFE than 3D offerings (yes, including Pixar's work).

But while I'm happy about the movie coming out, I'm a little disturbed at the controversy surrounding it.

First of all--the "FINALLY!" I keep hearing. Yes, Disney needed a black princess. Yeah, they could have animated her a LOT sooner. But Disney also brought us (admittedly not culturally correct versions, but they tried) a Chinese heroine, an Arabian heroine, and an American Indian heroine. I'm a little confused--are we ignoring some of these other heroines? Or was the black princess supposed to come first? Because that's what I feel like the issue is--by my reading, people seem to be insulted that Tiana didn't appear before, say, Mulan. Seriously, what? Why? What barometer are we supposed to be reading that tells us whose "race" comes first in making Disney movies? Are we using the American population? Do we have to segment it and dole out our Princesses in order of Biggest Diverse Group (then where's our Latino princess? Our lesbian princess?)? Or are we going by order of Most Suffering (where's our Jewish princess?). I'm not happy Disney waited so long, either, but that doesn't mean the company hasn't paid at least SOME attention to diversity.

Second--the fairy tale. "The Frog Princess" is, actually, a "Frog Prince" variant. The Princess in that tale does, indeed, turn into a frog. I don't know the details, but I'd imagine that Disney's main idea was to bring a strong heroine to the forefront. You know, a girl who might get into a scrape, and then get out of it, all by using her own brains and cunning. I think that's a fine story. A great story. A much better story than the original "Frog Prince" anyway (that princess is a bit of a jerk). The title change? I'll agree that it sounds nicer, but the other stories based off of well-known fairy tales DID keep their titles. "The little mermaid" was based off of "The little mermaid." And so on. (exceptions: "Mulan" wasn't a well known story in America prior to the animation, and Pocahontas was a historical figure). A dumb point, but it bugged me.

Third--What on earth were they thinking with the trailer (ok, this hasn't been any controversy I've SEEN, but *I* noticed it)? Maybe I'm more Puritanical than I thought, but I caught a whiff of wayyy too much sexuality in one small nugget of time. How much more suggestive could this prince be in a kid's movie? Oh well, at least he has a character (better than Prince Charming and That-Dude-Ariel-Married,Whatever-His-Name-Was). And so far nothing looks quite as bad as that nasty guy's song in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (I was horrified when I watched that again as a teenager).

So yeah, some awkward trailer stuff, and I don't understand some of the uproar. It seems to be defeating Disney's purpose in making this movie.

I'm looking forward to enjoying it in theaters though. Tiana's design looks like one of Disney's best!
  • mamabear3 · 4 months ago
Okay, so here are my concerns. First of all if the princess spend most of her time in the movie as a frog, I think that is racist. This is a Disney Princess movie NOT SHREK! I love Shrek but if they make the 1st African American Princess and she is a frog for most the movie that is just wrong. I was looking forward to taking my biracial children to this movie but when I saw the trailer my heart sank.

Next, if Disney doesn't put their new "Frog Princess" with the other princesses together on much of their princess merchandise then we will boycott disney forever! I know they will have Frog princess merchandise but I am talking about the collection where ALL the princesses are shown together.

For people who say "lighten up" when racism is stopped against ALL black people then and only then will I "lighten up!"

I am in no way racist once so ever. I feel black people deserve to be recognized in a Disney film as much as any other race. However, I feel that if Disney wanted to make this movie they should have stuck with at least SOME of the original qualities of the story. Perhaps they should have created their own new fairy tale about a little black princess instead of just taking a random fairy tale, changing everything about it, and throwing in a black princess.
  • GaryP64 · 4 months ago
I am not from New Orleans but my wife and I have been making annual visits for a decade. The Voodoo theme is not racist in the least. Voodoo is part of the culture of the area and is an accepted and promoted part of the cities history. Anyone who reads anything negative into that theme has never been to that fantastic city.
  • lizzieknowsbest · 3 months ago
Wow, I type up Princess and the Frog and google gives me choices including Princess and the Frog controversy.
First of all, I for one am happy that Disney finally chooses to have a Black Princess, although I will agree that her being in New Orleans, is WTF status, lol.
Now for a Latin Princess, hehe I'm Peruvian, then again we had Emperor's New Groove, so I'm okay.. for now. ;)
I love about that her image is that of a true Black woman (i.e. darker skin, thick lips, broad nose) and is quite beautiful. As opposed to the whole "Eurpoeanized" depiction of what's considered beautiful for a Black Woman, the whole light skin being better than dark skin.
Anyways, I think people should stop being so sensitive and stop picking at each individual thing that can be deemed offensive. Disney is at least making some progress.
  • jazmineroxs · 3 months ago
i honestly dont see any problems and the new orleans theme makes perfect sense. In disney land there is a new orleans and disney put it in himself so all the movie is doing is adding another movie and princess onto the legacy. And i think its wonderful that they chose to have a character with personality because the old submissive princess thing was getting old
  • billyjobob · 3 months ago
Though I have not been back since Katrina, I used to live there. Voodoo is a big part of the history of New Orleans and if you don't believe me then walk the french quarter, they try to capitalize on it. And as for the ethnic thing it is just a cartoon, if it were a redneck hick it would be ok?
  • HarmonyRose · 3 months ago
I've been waiting for Disney to stop throwing out so many 3d-animated movies and make another classic cartoon film. I am pretty sure this one will be a memorable one, and honestly, I do not want to have to say "I'm black" to show others that it isn't offending to us. I see Disney as being cultural instead of racial. I bet if Disney made a multicultural film, there would still be 'that's racist' comments. I just wish people would forget about cultural differences sometimes. We are all one race, human, aren't we?

i agree with you. in allmost all the disney movies there are talking animals. and i'm glad the they are making a black character, it give disney a new twist and it shows how much we have changed within the years.
i am also glad that one of my favorite books the frog princess is coming to life.
but i wish they would call tiana the characters really name Emma. even though it is not as oreganol as i would like it, its still based off the book and i'm happy about it

OMG!!! All I have to say is that It's about time! I'm very proud of Disney! I've loved its movies since I was born (I'm 20 years old and I'm African-American female).

Yes, there will always, always be critiscm, slander, and even a lilttle racial hatred. (don't think I spelled that right, oh well you get it). I can't believe people are actually pulling and preying on the little problems. The Title? Come on man, The Frog Princess. I automatically thought of how she had to KISS THE FROG. Not assuming that she was ugly. WTH?

The voodoo/ magic part? What Disney Princess movie doesn't involve magic/voodoo in some kind of way? Sleeping Beauty- Maleficent, from a woman to a dragon. Snow White- the queen who made herself a hag--poison apple? Aladdin-Jafar? Need I say more? There was bad magic/voodoo. Good magic/voodoo-Cinderella-Fairy Godmother, Sleeping Beauty-The Fairies (don't know their actual titles). But I will admit that when I saw the magic/voodoo part in the movie clip, my mind went to the island of Haiti. Whos nationality is black and that they do do voodoo.

The setting, New Orleans is a place where some of the African American culture comes from---the food, music, dressing styles. The movie was not made to put those people down, it just seems (to me) that they just wanted to do an ethnic setting for the story. Think of the timezone if it was before Hurricane Katrina. Now if her name was Katrina, then I could see how that would create some problems, but other than that, look at the styles of the clothing and the buildings.

AN ALLIGATOR SIDEKICK???? I really don't get how that is a problem! Am I missing something??? What's wrong with having an alligator in the story, let alone having it for a sidekick? Peter Pan didn't seem to have a problem with it- and they have PLENTY of Peter Pan movies for Disney and non-disney films. The two crocs from The Rescure's yes! Villians. So tell me again why this is a probelm?

All women are beautiful. If you think someone is ugly, simply think that they are "just not right for YOUR eyes". Anyways, in closing, all races of people are here! Period. None of us are going anywhere so we need to just get over it and go on with our lives.

Disney is taking a step, just like Amreica did with our President and I think this movie will be a success. And yes I'm bringing it up as to make a point. Times are changing and we have to go with it. I'm not racist and I'm not a bigot. I have too many friends of all races and it;s just not right and not going to help anything. DISNEY---LET'S MAKE ANOTHER GREAT MOVIE!!! no more 3D Films lol

To also add, Has anyona ever seen DISNEY'S ROGER'S AND HAMMERSTIEN CINDERELLA??? It's a live cast that stars----Brandy-African American-part: Cinderella, Paolo Montalban- Philippino (forgive if spelled wrong)part: PRINCE Christopher, Whitney Huston-African American-part: Fairy Godmother, Victor Garber-Caucasian-part:The King, Whoopi Goldberg-African American-part: The Queen, Cinderella's two stepsisters, one caucasian: Veanne Cox part: Calliope and the other African American: Natalie Desselle part: Minerva. (these comments were directing toward some of the first comments for this movie.) Interacial relationships have happened for Disney! So I can't really see how it's a problem having the prince Latino and the princess black. Grow Up Please. Disney can't be racist. The have black voice overs all the time. Would they hire them if that being the case? I don't think so! It's been brought up about Jasmine, Mulan, Jungle Book, Pocahontas. Would they have made those movies if they were? Just had to piont that out

ok...that version of cinderalla...was the black version of the white original...basically a copy...i guess we should have been satisfied with that...how dare we want an original character/princess...girl...what were we thinking. i dont remember them selling any black cinderella toys....oh...maybe a doll...but that was it. they got blonde wigs, stylin heads in the white version of cinderella...pajamas, clothes....and where was brandy??? hmmm....i got 4 girls..and couldnt find a thing! i dont think anyone is sayin disney is racist...but u got a black princess....and why cant she have a black prince?? why cant my children see that...why cant we show a good black man get the girl at the end?? i dont think jasmine was with a white guy...nor mulan...u cant count ariell....she was a mermaid..lol! cinderella...certainly wasnt gonna get a latino man...just sayin when they decide to showcase black people...it's never a complete set...im really not understanding. grow up....really?? you're young grasshopper...and i dont think u completely understand what all this means...(i call everyone grasshopper...no offense) and voice overs...yes...in supporting roles...never the star!! not sayin they racist...just when they have the opportunity to make an african american film...i guess they didn't want it to be too black...things that make u go hmmmmm???

Hello Mrs. Danielle,(hoping this is the correct way to address you) I do see
what you are saying. My dad is upset about it too, says the exact same thing
you do. I am too a little, but I don't want you to think that I am
blindsided or totally oblivious to the whole thing. I do get it, really. I
can see the issue from both sides. I am very young, yes, and I guess I'm
just use to what I can get, because it mostly seems to keep happening. I
guess I was just trying to see the good in it because Disney finally got a
black princess and that it has been way passed time since they should have
had it, and I was happy about it. Yea can't count Ariel, she was half fish
and I think you should get the other half lol. No I didn't take offense to
grasshaopper, I thought it was cute and symbolizes.

I think that this is a wonderful idea. When I first saw Tiana on a Facebook quiz, of all things I said "Who is this?!" See, I'm a young African-American lady so it was very interesting to me. As soon as I saw the word "controversy" in the Google search I thought..."oh boy here we go."

I read the article above. I don't really see an issue at all. Besides...every other race was touched right? Caucasian, Middle Eastern, Asian, Native American...isn't it our turn?

Thanks for hearing me out. Can't wait to see the movie!

I am excited about this movie. I can't wait to take my daughter and her friends to see it. It is about time Disney had a princess of color. I don't see a problem with the film being set in New Orleans. Yes there has been unspeakable tragedy there and the community is still suffering from it, but there is also a rich history there that appears to be shared in the trailers that I have seen. Voo doo is part of new orleans. It is not the only thing, but it is there. I am not from the area, but I know many that are. I would like to get there take on the movie

I too think this will be a great movie! Children of all ages and ethnicities enjoy Disney's Princess movies. I'm an African-American female and it never bothered me to want to be Cinderella, Snow White, Arielle, Jasmine, etc. They were Princesses and color or ethnicity was never a factor in my mind. While it's true that little black girls may be able to identify more with Tiana, it's not something I believe most little girls worry about. Question is...will little white girls like Tiana or want to be a Princess like Tiana? Or even better...will their PARENTS have a problem with it? I sure hope not. It's a huge breakthrough, I agree...but let's not make a BIG deal about it and nit-pick every little thing.
  • danielle34 · 2 months ago
i liked the trailor....but when they first started with the idea of doing the frog princess...i was like...why cant this be about an african american princess...a traditional one...u got mulan...u got anastasia...u got jasmine, all native to their countries...so why couldnt we have a story about a black princess and her journey. idk...well...its been too long coming...and it amazes me that it's 2009 and my girls are JUST getting a movie they can see themselves in. those who are not african american have no idea how that feels...let alone to have children and for them not to have any princesses that look like them. mufaro and his beautiful daughters would make a WONDERFUL movie!!!
  • shi · 1 month ago
Most ethnic movies almost always have a mystical magical creature-ish tone.
The problem with the princess and the frog, in the black community and in media, is variation. Most of the depictions of black culture that exist are exploitative. Everything contains ebonics and uncivilized behavior that reinforce the negative stereotypes, and because the negative is always on display, people actually believe most blacks are uneducated, uncivilized and full of jive.

are you serious!? since when did disney had to have white princesses? when i found out that there was a black princess..well i was happy. i bet there are bunches of little girls wondering why there is only white princesses, well problem solved. and who cares if its in new orleans. since when did people not like black people? 20 years ago?idk. but can they reunite again..plz.

I am so EXCITED.This movie is going to rock. Firstly its is 2D!!!! It has a REAL VILLAIN, a no good scum bag that you just know you love to see fall. Also its directed by the Aladdin and Little Mermaid guys. Animated by vertern animators, some apprentices of the 9 Old Men. And Randy Newman is doing the music!!! Come on peole this is frecken awesome!!! People for all the critism that is being directed toward this you just have to take it for what it is... a good old fashion DISNEY ANIMATION. If anything see past the race and apperciate the movie for the moral and the years of work that went into it (this stuff is not a walk in the park).

People, please. Mr. William Blackburn: Ever been to New Orleans? It is a swamp, it's voodoo, it's alligators, it's black jazz, it's awesome food, it's colorful people (and I'm not refering to race), it's historical and it is BEAUTIFUL. My family is from Louisiana. My grandmother use to call all her granddaughters "Marie Laveau" when their hair was all messy. I loving refer to my daughter as the same, at times. Disney is not perfect, nor is anything else, so pull you heads out and enjoy the movie.

This whole controversy is really absurd, at least from some one living in Europe.
    * I'm overjoyed, that Disney is finally investing in a good'ol 2D movie, and wait, it is also the first musical they have made since Hercules, talk about YEAH! I grew up with Disney, with The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King and to finally have some of that magic back, is heaven. This is coming from someone who is almost thirty years old...

    * New Orleans. Katrina-what...? People outside the US just don't associate this city with the hurricane. They think about the Mardi Gras, the jazz, the swinging and dancing, sweet lifestyle of the south. The location of the movie may even bring the current situation in New Orleans to a wider spectrum, as well as introducing people to the wonderful history of the city. Heck, it may get more visitors, more money etc.

    * Interracial couples. This is the first time a Disney-movie is set in an environment where interraciality is normal. Belle lived in a French village รก la medieval style, it was completely homogenious by nature. Mulan was only with Chinese people because it is set in China. Aladdin, only Arabic people, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, again, that European medieval thing going on. Where in this could Disney had put different races...? Finally they can do it, as they bring their story to the "new" continent of America, where peole have lived mixed for some time already. (Pocahontas can't be counted in here). In fact, this is the most modern of all Disney-movies, set in the 1920's, which makes it very interesting, and which makes it different from all the other princess-stories, basically, because there is no classic princess-story to be told. Meaning, no grand castle, no king and queen in the classical sense.

    * Tiana being a maid. This was the 1920's. Do people, who are against a thing like this, want history to be changed somehow...? I mean, wasn't that common at the time...? Seems to me, reading these comments, that people want to erace history, forget about it etc. Sounds very dangerous to me, to be honest. History is what it is, there is negative and positive issues about it, but it is what it is. Couldn't Tiana have been happy and all as a maid? Does your logic mean, that you can only be princess-like and approaved if you lead a better life, ie. at least middle class, and god forbid, a more "white-like"-life??! I hope my point is understood. This is new ground for Disney, going into all the hotspot that was southern US in the 1920's. In fact, the situation and conditions were far worse in a medieval village, but since it's so far off in time, it is harder for us to identify ourselves with those surroundings etc.

    * Kids don't react to race if their not thought how to do it. I showed the trailer to me young cousins the other day and they didn't even notice that Tiana was of a different colour. They loved Tiana and the Prince as frogs and of course the alligator and the firefly.

    * Yes, I understand that the black people in the US have a hard history, but so does many other people in this world. This movie is for everyone, not just Americans. It seems extremely smallminded to read too much into a, even if loved by adults as well, cartoon, that is aimed at kids, who will laugh out loud when the firefly seems to fart. They will not give a rats ass about the princess being white or black or yellow or whatever. But then I'm not American and didn't grow up in that society. Sometimes i say thank god for that.

Seriously, can't wait till the movie comes out. Its about time we get some black person as the princess. And hell yes this is going to be one gorgeous movie. I just got back from New Orleans not too long ago. Cannot wait to see it again, but Disney Style Gotta love it. What the hell is racism anyway. Shit we all racist against our selves sometimes. I here white folks, black folks, mexican folks always talking shit on their selves and its all in good fun. People get over it, we are a huge melting pot here in America, for all I know I am probably mixed with black, jew, white you name it.

The fact that Disney thought that the Princess had to have a "ethnic" name is offensive. Maddy was fine...in fact I'm black and that is the exact same name that I was to give to my child had he been a girl. The fact that it is set in La. well is that because they felt that she had to sound "ethnic" there goes that stupid word again. ...I'm form Connecticut and sound like a true New Englander proper Queens English ...and i am tired of the fact that every time there is a black woman or girl speaking on tv or radio that they have to say things like ummm humm and girrrlll friend.. and drag each work out in a sassy like manner. Why couldn't she have been a Princess from somewhere in the north? just a question but not a necessity. I want to make a big point in saying that i am ecstatic that this movie is coming out so that my niece can watch it and relate to the fact that this princess looks like her and is royalty and beautiful. As long as they don't call the movie the FROG princess which would indicate that the actual princess was the frog.... we are all set...
  • littlegurlsmom · 1 month ago
I think the fact that the princess is black is a good thing. Where was the controversy when there were caucasian princesses? Asian princesses? Native American prinesses? Indian princesses? Give me a break! This movie is for children and children will not pick up racial innuendos from a movie. I think all little girls of color will be happy to have a princess the same color as them. We should stop picking stuff apart! It is a time honored story that Disney made some changes to and little girls everywhere are going to love this princess as much as they do Ariel, Snow White, Cinderella, Jasmine, Mulan and all of the other princesses of different races. We should be teaching our children that it doesn't matter what race you are....all little girls can be princesses!
  • tina1433 · 1 month ago
For those critics who have decided this particular Disney Princess movie has a negative conotation.....my 11 year old daughter has never been more excited about having a Disney Princess that she can relate to. My daughter has never been able to dress up like a "Princess" because she does not look like the characters. Tiara is beautiful and my daughter now can identify with a beautiful princess. New Orleans could not be a better location to have picked for this film. New Orleans is a city that although has seen a lot of devestation, it has the spirit and tenacity to bounce back and be even better. I hope that same uniqueness will come be seen through the characters in the movie. Don't rain on our parade. We have been looking forward to this for a long time. Thanks Disney for finally thinking about the little black girls.
  • simplyplush · 4 weeks ago
I'm an African-American female, and I'm also excited. I'm glad that they made their changes however. Before hand they had her as a chamber maid, dealing with a spoiled plantation owner's daughter. At least that's what I had heard. It would be silly to deny that Disney has had racial undertones in their movies before. Dumbo is a major reference. Just as in Aladdin, they had to alter their "Arabian Nights" song because it racially made the Arabics seem barbaric to the point where they would "cut off your ear if they don't like your face". Is it bad that people want it to come out right? After all, realistically speaking, Disney probably isn't going to have another movie starring a "black" girl, or even featuring one. Which is sad actually.

So, it's not really just the "little things". That's like saying racism doesn't exist now a-days, which it still does. Plus, with the name Maddy, which was sort of like "Mammy". Also, it's not that pretty of a name. Look at Disney names in the past.

Ariel. Belle. Cinderella. Jasmin. Aurora. Snow White. Pocahontas. Mulan. Megara. Esmeralda.
Just naming a few of the names that they've had as their characters...and then you throw in Maddy. x.x And I agree, the title "The Frog Princess" doesn't sound as lovely as "The Beauty and the Beast" or "The Little Mermaid".

  • becky_pope · 4 weeks ago
Anyone who thinks "The Frog Princess" is controversial is spending way too much time thinking abut it. It's a cartoon, people. Besides, wouldn't the very same people be pooh-poohing this movie if, say, Princess Tiana was named Sally or Jane or another "white" name? Wouldn't people be ranting and raving if New Orleans was depicted as something other than a town famous for it's colorful history, dangerous swamps and, yes, voodoo? Disney can't win. Whatever way they choose to depicted New Orleans and the people who live there, someone will be offended. May I just repeat that this is a CARTOON? Put this "controversy" in the already large-sized stack of Disney urban legends (the pornographic Little Mermaid video cover, the "good children take off their clothes" from Aladdin, the "sex" in the dust cloud from Lion King, the fact that Walt Disney was thought to be a Nazi sympathizer...) and get over yourselves! Just let your inner child thrill with the anticipation of seeing a Disney animated movie done in their classic style. I've been waiting for this for 15 years and I'm not going to miss it!

will everyone please be quiet and enjoy the darn movie; stop thinking so much into it. The negativity is ruining it for the rest of us who like romance, suspense, talking animals and action along with our animation. We just want to see a good Disney movie; isn't real life hard enough, let us fantasize peacefully. For those who are wondering; Yes I am a black woman and real life is hard enough; that is why I go to the movies to fantasize for a couple of hours.

As we await the "The Princess and the Frog", I am pleased. At our neighborhood party my niece will be Princess Tiana. As African-American women we are excited to have a Black princess to dress as. As children we did not have any real Black images. We were "Black Cinderella" or "Black Snow White" (what an oxymoron...lol) We must start somewhere for change. Give Disney a little break...I think they tried. I love the name change, "Tiana" is a pretty & regal name, and given it's set in New Orleans, what other animal best represent the area than an alligator??!!! EVERY Disney film has "local" animals, magic & "ethnic" names for their characters...that's pure Disney...LASTLY, parents, it is your responsibility to teach your children, not the media. I understand your gripes, but lighten up some and enjoy life...It is progress.

A year ago...where was I when this movie came out...I've never heard of it, but know that in the U.S. we complain about the silliest things when people in some other nations are starving and children are being exploited. Stop being so literal, sensitive, and insecure. Ture, it's about time Disney illustrates Black Beauty....but it's not only Disney's responsibility to depict cultural diversity. There are a lot of writer, entertainers, producers, etc., of color who could do the same...and you must admit that Princess Tiana is Beautiful no matter the title of the movie. I have to see the movie, of course, to see if there are any subliminal racist undertones...but the main thing is to enjoy life and quit bitc$#ing.

id like to mention, since no one else has, that as a jewish women, i STILL dont really have anyone to look up to...except they all "look like me" right? wrong. the only one that even remotely looks like me is Belle, but if i could EVER get my hair that nice, id be one hell of a happy lady. just because my skin is white, doesnt mean that i am the same as a european christian person. in fact, i would love to see jewish women represented in a way that didnt make them look like the old granny, overbearing mother or young girl that finds love outside of her oppressive jewish community. the same can be said for the latino population.

at least your finally getting a princess that looks like you, so now how about you stop complaining and help advocate for another race that is yet unrepresented.

when i first saw what this movie was about, i will admit that i was a bit put off by the story that they chose and the character representation, but then i remembered that it was a disney movie and their main audience is children. a simple audience calls for a very simple story line. unfortunately, stereotypes(good ones) are the best way to get a point across to children who may not understand otherwise. for example, smart people wear glasses. is it true? no. but a scientist wearing glasses puts across the idea that he is smart to children easier than having him explain a complicated equation.

I like it when people exchange views taht is how we grow and gain knowledge. I am excited for a black princess. I have waited so long for this! but, even though I am not ofended I want to hear why others might be.

the reason why it was originally "frog princess" is because that is the original name of the original story... you say it doesn't sound pleasant, well... fairy tales weren't pleasant back then. besides... she TURNS into a FROG..... i think the title sounds appropriate. makes sense DUH

and alligators and voodooism in new orleans...... consider the fact that new orleans does in fact have a history of voodooism.. and that it does inhabit alligators....... whats the big deal? would you rather have magical fairies and unicorns? or maybe a giant rainbow in the middle of a swamp?

i think the people who accuses others of being racist are actually racist themselves.. i didn't even catch that... all i saw was a princess kissing a frog and turning into a frog and now they gotta go through the struggle of becoming human again. thats all i saw. the fact that some people managed to turn that into racism is completely ridiculous.

First of all this will be a great movie because its what Disney used to be before they screwed up with miley cyrus (dear lord dont get me started). SO WHAT if shes black. they made aladdin the color he was for a reason, it was set in egypt. pochahontas was an indian princess and the theme of that movie tied in. nothing about this is racist. new orleans has a high african american population so its not racist its just the truth. it just goes togther like yalls damn chicken and waffles. I dont get what why people think this is racist..if they made every movie with white charecters then that would be racist. the only reason people complain is because they have nothing else to bitch about. this will be a classic disney movie.

I'm from Louisiana originally, and I'm totally thrilled about the theme. Why should Disney make an African fairy tale, necessarily, for African Americans? We all built this country together. The influence of the French language, voudoun, and the many African contributions to Louisiana culture are all parts of the lives of African Americans who live in New Orleans, or parts of the worldview we grew up with. Life there is far from perfect but some of it is so beautiful! Why not celebrate it? Why go looking for a story more separate from us so that it's politically safe? Ok, so Tiana is consorting with a lighter-skinned man. I don't think that matters so long as he treats her like a princess.

Having 2D back is cool too.
  • trishie · 1 day ago
Ever since I was a little girl, I have wished that Disney would make a film that had a black princess. I felt left out because I was under the impression that since I had dark skin I was not good enough to be a princess. Later in years my nieces were introduced to Jasmine and Pocahontas, while darker in skin, they still were not "black."

Now in my forties, I can't wait until this movie comes out. Not only will I get DVD versions for each of my nieces, I am adding one to my own collection. I am very happy I was able to see one in my lifetime and although I am much older and have a lot more confidence in myself, it still reassured me that now every little girl can truly believe that she is a princess.
