I can hear the shitstorm this would cause already.

[We all realize that the last time that combination took home the top prize was when Titanic somehow made it to the top of the list] did you forget about LOTR?

i was actually really disappointed when i heard they'd be pushing 'the soloist' back. i
thought atonement was by far the weakest of the best pic nominations last year and
joe wright isn't all that impressive to me but you have to go to great lengths to
mess up a story like that

Nolan deserves the nod for best director and probably the award itself because TDK had a lot to say and now seems even more relevant given the events that have happened over the last couple of months

I feel I am the only one not really bothered by if a film I like gets an Academy Award. Sure, its nice to have a film you really like get the attention it deserves but as long as you really like it, does it matter that some suits do too?

However, I don't think the Academy will really risk incurring the wrath of the public so they probably will go with at least Heath Ledger for Best Supporting Actor and nominations for Best Picture, Best Score, Costume etc.

It used to be that the academy was a representative of the people's taste in film. When an audience loved "The Godfather", they nominated it and won. When the hippies went flocking to see "Midnight Cowboy" and "Love Story", the academy nominated those movies for best picture and midnight cowboy won. When all those geeks went to see Lord of the Rings, it got into the best picture nominee list. A recent example has been Juno. I loved that movie, I thought it was going to be a hidden gem not even worth considered being a best picture nominee but it happened, why? because of the HYPE! If Hype about a pregnant teen can get a best picture nominee then The Dark Knight, far far far superior than Juno can get a best picture nominee. It has to happen. So sometimes the academy screws up like with the english patient, a beautiful mind, and terms of endearment but sometimes it suceeds with forrest gump and the sting.

I think TDK deserves a shit load of wins, but IMO, I think it actually will get a shit load
of nominations. Ratings have been falling for the Awards ceremony, and by having TDK
in multiple categories will help raise the number of viewers which will allow them to
charge more for commercial time. I don't know to much about how the Academy
works, but seeing as it's a great film, a widely seen film, and an almost universally
loved film, it will get the nominations it deserves, but mainly for money.I wish it would
get nominated regardless, but that's what I think

The academy probably won't thank The Dark Knight for being an awesome movie, and they'll never have to. The fans know.

Gary Oldman really, really deserves a supporting nomination as well, but I doubt anyone
will notice that because of Heath.

If the Academy really wants people to pay attention to the awards outside of Hollywood, they are going to have to nominate films and actors that people really like and want to go see. I'm not talking about nominating every bubblegum flick, but a few nominations for films like the Dark Knight, Iron Man, and Tropic Thunder will not kill the academy. In fact, it just might pull it out of the nursing home.

I'd say nominate Ledger for Best Supporting, and Downey for Tropic Thunder or Iron Man. That would really get the fans to watch.

Regardless of Academy consideration, that Oscar Batman is stealing is not to scale.

    =P

I think the Academy is composed mainly of bullshit but despite the film snobbery,
they do recognize some films that a lot of mainstream audiences don't appreciate,
but most certainly do deserve the recognition. I think as said, the thinning out of
contenders does make TDK a larger factor come awards season, but I wouldn't
completely go berserk yet. We have to consider the late entries (Milk, Curious Case
of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Changeling, Australia, Slumdog Millionaire, The
Wrestler, Defiance, Revolutionary Road, Doubt, The Reader). Only 2 films have
probably dropped (The Road, The Soloist), but you still have to consider the
remaining 11 before you examine TDK. I don't think Clint Eastwood's made
anything short of shortlist material in half a decade, and well there's very little word
on like half of those films thus far. I would love to see TDK transcend the superhero
genre, but before it can get into the best picture/best director heavy hitter lineup,
it's gotta get the screenplay and editing and other technical aspects. Heath is a solid
lock for the nomination so I'm not gonna say anymore about that. I think I'll be
pretty happy if Wally Pfiester gets recognized for his brilliant cinematography or
Jonathan Nolan for his screenwriting. I'd say a good chunk of Christopher Nolan's
success comes from his genius brother (Memento, The Prestige, TDK).

On the other hand, I won't be entirely surprised if TDK got hit with a billion
nominations. The Academy's recently had a streak of recognizing indy hits that
really don't deserve such incredible hype. I thought films like (mostly fan favorites)
Juno, Michael Clayton, Atonement, Little Miss Sunshine, The Departed, Crash and
Babel were all decent but not awards material. Okay Babel was just plain awful but
    the rest were pretty good.

Hmmm, I would be suprised if they got really nominated for 6 to 8 but I would really like to see Heath to really win the Best Actor category if he was ever to nominated in that category.
