Film School Rejects: The Dark Knight: Joker? Hah! Harvey Dent is the One to Watch

  • NinKenDo · 1 year ago
I'm actually very glad to hear this news and makes me even more hopeful and excited for this sequel. Two Face is a fantastic villain and that is mainly because Harvey Dent is such a great character and I think this will be really cool to see the transition from Dent in Dark Knight into Two Face in the next film.
  • Dark Knight Trailor · 1 year ago
In Batman Forever, Two Face, aka Harvey Dent was a real joke. He was just a regular villain without any real recognition. The animated Batman series features Two Face much better than Batman Forever.

Two Face popularity will definitely rise once Nolan complete his third movie. Though the Joker is still my favorite villain, Two Face is right below the Joker.

First of all I loved both Tim Burton's 1989 Batman and Jack Nicholson's portrayal of The
Joker. Still, I have to object to the author of this article referring to it as the "original"
Batman. I seem to remember a very cheesy 1966 movie and according to IMDB there was
another movie in 1943. Having not seen the earlier one I can speak for its quality and I'm
sure many die hard Dark Knight fans would like to forget the 1966 camp-fest, but let's give
credit where credit is due. The 1989 Batman may have been the first movie to take Bruce
and his alter ego seriously but it was in no way the "original."

The only thing I hope is that they don't off the Joker at the end of this one. It seems all the superhero movies have one thing in common with one single exception - every villain gets it at the end... except Lex Luthor.

I'd like to see the Joker become a constant thorn in Batman's side through the series, either engineering things on behalf of other villains, or just plain being nasty by his little ol' lonesome.
  • DoLLfAcE · 6 months ago
heh, i agree wholeheartedly! only thing is, since beloved Heath Ledger(god rest his soul) is gone, they'd better get someone equally as good to play Joker. Otherwise it will lose my interest and I'll have to remain a loyal fan of the Dark Knight Joker and let him have his due.____DoLLfAcE

Retroboy - I am with you there. I think that they should keep the Joker around so that he can resurface in the next flick. Logistically, that could cause problems if Heath Ledger isn't signed on for more, but my sources tell me that there is an option in his contract for more films. The faith that I have in Christopher Nolan also tells me to expect the Joker to stick around a bit.
  • Sketchplanet - Art for Everyon · 1 year ago
Yep I'm wondering how Heath could beat Jack in his portrayal of the Joker..will be interesting to watch. If the concentration of the villians is the main importance of the film, is there any need for Maggie G's involvement?
  • David · 1 year ago
I'm hoping that Joker gets sent to Arkham, at the end of this. So then, we can see some great Harley Quinn action.
  • digga · 1 year ago
people have speculated or even read some places that the dr. who becomes harley quinn does make an apperance somewheres in the film. this would be an opportune time to introduce her as a 'regular person' and develop the big relationship b/w her and the joker.

I can't see why anyone would say that the movies about Batman that were released in the 1990s were any part of the franchise at all. While I loved Jack Nicholson's role as The Joker, I just don't feel that he showed the real Joker. The original Joker in the comics was a twisted, hard-boiled killer and I think that he was portrayed as a comic character in that film. I feel these new filns will stay with the original storyline and as we saw in 'Batman Returns' we will see in the films to come the real Batman story. There is a new cartoon series that came out recently that shows the Batman story better then the five or six films we saw in the 90s. And I feel these new films will stay true to what "Batman" was really about. The makers of these new films got my attention with the first movie and I think they'll keep it in the films to come. Batman was not a comedian and neither were the villians that make up the story.
  • DoLLfAcE · 6 months ago
OH i have to agree. The movies prior to Batman Begins and the Dark Knight were "comic book" tyle films. These 2 newest ones are not. They are filmed and acted much more realistically and hard-boiled. The Joker was always a psychopath with homicidal tendencies and such. What we saw before was pure entertainment. These new films delve into the mindset and realism of what Batman, and all his nemesi SHOULD ALWAYS have been.
  • DW · 1 year ago
Hey I'm still looking forward to seeing the new Joker in the Dark Knight movie. However, I found an article that compares 3 of the more famous joker actors (i.e. Jack Nicholson and including the TV show Joker). It's an article titled Dark Knight Joker - Will He Be Better than the Rest. Interesting comparison.

    R.I.P. Heath Ledger.
  • Erik · 1 year ago
Yes, I do find it curious they're hiding Two Face so much. Could Christopher Nolan be playing a magician's trick... teasing us with the Joker and hiding an even bigger villain?
  • BRANDEN · 1 year ago
I THINK THE BIGGEST JOKE OF THEM ALL ,IS THE FACT THAT THIS MOVIE IS REALLY ABOUT TWO FACE .NOBODY HAS RECOGNIZED THE FACT THAT HE IS THE MAIN VILLIAN AND THEIR HIDING HIM SO WELL.
  • Steve Perkins · 1 year ago
We Shall see!! :D Ledger looks very promising!! :)
  • Eric · 1 year ago
Ledger's last performance will be his best. Eckhart as Dent is perfect. I can't wait...
  • JSPS · 1 year ago
I got bored a while ago (a couple of years actually) and did this iamge of Harvey Dent. I'm pleased that there will be more of the gritty and less of the camp. The first set of movies started out almost right, but killing off the bad guys isn't part of the comics and shouldn't be part of the movies.

Hopefully, they will do Two-Face right, not the bumbleing idiot as portayed by Tommy Lee Jones in Batman Forever.
  • darsh · 1 year ago
so since the passing of heath ledger, what will become of the joker in the next film? any predictions as to what will happen in the movie?
  • DubDub · 1 year ago
In my honest opinion, I can see where the director will try to keep Joker alive but in Ledger's honor probably will not and will move the next one over to dent but we can easily understand Joker being sent to the hospital and another array of former villains will be introduced or tapped on the shoulder in sequels to come.
  • SPOILER ALERT · 1 year ago
Harvey Dent AKA Two Face dies at the end of The Dark Knight. So no. He will not be the villain in the next sequel.

And yes, Aaron Eckhart does a fantastic job, but Heath Ledger as the Joker is what everyone will remember about this movie.
  • Fizzgig · 1 year ago
Two-face is most likely NOT dead. His "death" scene is too vague and indefinite (all you see is him sprawled out on the ground after taking a short fall) to be anything but foreshadowing for the next film. Perhaps the "white knight" persona is gone, but the villain remains.
  • ? · 1 year ago
i don't think two face is dead. they might have had a funeral for him but they also had a funeral, i'm guessing even though it wasn't shown in the movie, for gordon, who ended up not being dead. maybe gordon planned a fake funeral for two-face so that he would be remembered with honor.
  • Cresty · 1 year ago
I think Harvey's death is staged to keep his memory clean. He is probably holed up somewhere in Arkham for the next movie. It would make sense to keep him alive especially in the wake of Ledger's death. I would also like to see them bring Catwoman on board, she would fit in Nolan's vision of keeping his version of Batman in the real world without being implausible, say like Mr. Freeze or the Penguin.
  • DL · 1 year ago
Harvey Dent is dead. The next film will probably focus more on the internal conflict facing Commissioner Gordon-- whether he will fulfill his duty to pursue Batman and enforce the law, or whether he will fulfill his duty to defend Gotham by refusing to pursue Batman, and thereby enforce justice. I'm predicting Penguin's arrival and a veiled stab at the political establishment centered around Penguin's running for Mayor of Gotham (much like in Batman Returns, only 1000000 times more polished). It will be much like the Joker's indictment of the thin line between civilization and chaos when he faces Harvey Dent in the Hospital. Book It!
  • ghanja · 1 year ago
Umm sorry guys heath ledger is dead :(

So no more joker it will just mess up what heath did...
  • DoLLfAcE · 6 months ago
Yes, unfortunately, my heart is broken. Heath was an exquisite actor who really portrayed the Joker with the absolute realism needed. I HAVE heard, tho, that they are considering other actors to take up his mantle and continue the Joker, one being Jake Gyllenhall(sp) While i dont agree he could do it, (looks alone), I think that there ARE several actors out there that could do it if given leave to open their psyches to the twisted mind of the Joker.
  • meg · 1 year ago
harvey dent dies at the end. i'm sorry to all who think he's coming back and blah blah
blah but he died. there is no way gordon would have staged his funeral after trying to kill
his entire family. they wouldnt' have faked a funeral to keep dents good memory they
would have blamed it on batman which is EXACTLY what they did. sorry no two face as a
villain in the next one. maybe the riddler...

i also think something more than a single rip at the end of the movie should have been
done. at least give each person who died there own slide instead of combining them
onto one. how about a picture as well to see the real heath ledger rather than have your
last memory of him as a sociopathic clown... i think he did an amazing job but
something more was needed to honor him especially since this is the role that pretty
    much took his life.
  • Nolan · 1 year ago
Did someone kick him over, or did his head turn when he was lying on the ground? There's no way Two-Faced is offed that easily. Do you know anything about the DC Universe? The villains keep reoccurring. And question, meg: Do you NOT remember the whole conversation about NOT LETTING THE JOKER WIN? To keep Harvey Dent honored? You know there multiple parts of it throughout the movie, but especially at the end after Batman pushed Harvey out the 'window.' Two-Face is meant to come back after this. And how can they keep Harvey so honored if, well.. if people looked at him? The White Knight is then tainted. He was supposed to be the best of them. Not a psychotic guy with half his face burned off, who shoots people at the flip of a coin. There's no way to bring him back into the eye of the public. Blaming Batman is just another step they had to take to make it work.

    http://www.comicvine.com/myvine/inferiorego/stu...
Look there. From the podcast mentioned, the Joker was supposed to be put on trial, and Two-Face would be a villain there. But, obviously you can't just do that with Heath gone.

Oh, and as for him being gone, the role did NOT take his life. For all of those who think the role brought some unmentioned demons that forced him to an overdose, you're wrong. It's already been clarified that it was just a mixture of pain killers and sleeping pills that combined to become lethal. Christian Bale also backs this.
    http://www.usmagazine.com/christian-bale-blamin...
    Check there.

In any case, there are no current plans for a sequel. Even after the death of Heath, it has already been noted that Nolan plans on a third movie, but he does not want to do it right away. Between being currently overdone on Batman, and the Ledger death, he will try and do other things. But rest assured, another Nolan-produced caped crusader flick is sure to come.
  • Tommyboy · 1 year ago
Nolan and his brother obviously played their parts in writing this perfectly. I've never seen so much debate after a movie. Frankly, I love it. I'm left guessing and trying to make the case for Two-Face being dead, then alive, yada yada. Just like everyone else.

I really wanted to comment on something else. Meg, I don't think you should make a statement like that, this role "took his life." We don't know all of the facts that truly surrounded his life or death. And that is the way it should be, because it is none of our business. Much like the bogus Bale story on Tuesday, we should not speculate without a true frame of reference. Plus, that statement inherently puts some sort of blame in the wrong place. His death was a tragic loss, more so for his family and friends, and not related to a movie role.
  • BATMANFAN · 1 year ago
Um Did anybody notice that the joker was the one who died? in the batman with michael keaton? cuz if i remember right he fell out of a major tall old church after fighting with batman and when he fell *jack nicholsons" joker he lost his chattering teeth? and he was lauging all the way down? Um just me and also Two-Face LIVED
  • MetalJacky · 1 year ago
Heath ledger did an AMAZING job as the Joker!!!!!. Even though the Joker is seen as the pyscho killing villain I love his character so much :D
    Heath made it so believable.

Oh and I totally agree with you Tommyboy about Heaths personal life not being any of our business. People need to think back at how wonderfull the effort put in by Heath was in each of his roles throught out his career instead of just looking at his death and speculating. It was a HUGE loss especially for Australia and the whole filming industry to lose such a down to earth guy with a heart for acting. Woulda loved to meet him.

    R.I.P Heath Ledger
  • Jessie · 1 year ago
When I found out Aaron Eckhart was playing Harvey Dent I thought he was so perfect for the part! His role in "Thanks For Smoking" was just like, a fast talking, charming representative.
I'm so glad to see that Harvey will continue to be in the sequel, I also really like how sympathetic they make his character. I still think Dr.Freeze's character still takes the cake for most loveable though.
Heath's performance was good and all, but he wasn't really in the film so much, so I don't get why everyone is making such a big deal about it. Bale's performance wasn't that amazing either, but I really liked how Eckhart was portrayed.
  • Jessie · 1 year ago
** I wanted to add one more comment, directed at Meg.
"how about a picture as well to see the real heath ledger rather than have your
last memory of him as a sociopathic clown"
    -Meg

Actually, this wasn't his last movie. He was working on another movie called The Imaginarium or something, when he had passed.
  • Meg · 1 year ago
This is Heath's last complete movie. The The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus was in the
middle of production when he passed and they had to cast 3 actors to fill his role after
    death.
  • Bri · 1 year ago
In response to the comment made about how the role didn't take Heath's life and that it was the lethal mixture of pain killers and sleeping killers i agree... but also disagree. He had been talking about his role explaining how deeply he gets into each of his characters and the role of the Joker was really disturbing him. So while it wasn't totally because of the role he was taking sleeping pills because he was having trouble sleeping due to his role.

And since there is so much speculation over who died and will the Joker return and all that... supposing that the Joker was in the sequel, who do you think would take the role? I'm racking my brain but it would be so hard to fit a role that everyone already knows.
  • DoLLfAcE · 6 months ago
I agree with you totally. I've thought it out and gnawed that bone til it was a tiny nub. He locked himself away for a solid month in a hotel room to prepare for the role of the Joker. and after that he was a darker personality altogether. He lost his wife and daughter to divorce and such.....such a tragic end to a spectacular life. I do know as i stated before, they ARE looking for a replacement if such a thing exists. Jake Gyllenhall is one of the actors being considered...looks alone i dont agree with it but maybe since he helped Heath he could do it. one never does know does one?
  • HELLA RAW · 1 year ago
the movie is dope... i wanna see a riddler in the next movie that isnt so comical and is real
complex. the one in batman forever is dope but hes too "funny"
there needs to b one that isnt crazy like joker and that can leave people thinking through
the whole movie...can any of u comic nerds give me a character that u think would b dope
    in the next batman movie??
  • Samantha · 1 year ago
I wanted to reply to Cresty's comment.
"I would also like to see them bring Catwoman on board, she would fit in Nolan’s vision of keeping his version of Batman in the real world without being implausible, say like Mr. Freeze or the Penguin."

I don't really know if you are saying Mr.Freeze and Penguin are implausible or if you are saying that they are plausible like Catwoman. If you were saying Penguin is implausible then I disagree because wasn't his condition just a defect? Correct me if I'm wrong though. Either way, I do agree that Nolan should keep the movie's going with more realistic character's rather then character's such as the Man Bat.

I would absolutely love for Catwoman to come back into play. However, I do think that if she ever does, they should choose an actress with talent, like Michelle. Rather than Halle Berry who's.. well... pathetic and was chosen for her looks alone. Michelle is still hot and a fantastic actress. I loved her portrayal as the Catwoman and I think that it would be awesome if they chose her for the part again, assuming they bring the cat back that is.

I have little criticism about this movie. I absolutely loved it. My only complaint at the moment is the CGI used for Two-Face's face. Everything has to look so flashy and real in movies these day's that they make some thing's look rediculous. I am more content with Tommy Lee's face as Two-Face then Eckharts. It may just be me and my friends who feel this way but we would of been more satisfied with some uber-tastic make-up effect's on his face as opposed to the CGI they used for the Two-Face. I'm also aggitated at the fact that his right eye wasn't seared or anything but what can ya do ^_^ It's lame but it bug's me a lot.

Anyway's, fantastic movie. Fantastic cast. All of it just fantastic. I can't wait for the next one!

Oh and wasn't the pencil trick just fantastic as well!
  • Tranque · 1 year ago
It would have been easier to focus on Harvey Dent if Aaron had given half the performance Heath did. Don't get me wrong, he is a talented actor. It's just that Ledger's performance was nothing short of phenomenal, and has given a new definition to the modern-day Joker.
I realize that the director wanted to put emphasis on the idea that anyone can fall with just the right 'incentive'. Good and bad exist in everyone, blah, blah. But, as much as he would like to underscore this off screen, it's not going to make up for the fact that this became a minor factor on-screen. They just didn't go a great job at fulfilling their goal if it was to make Harvey Dent's story the main focus. The Joker really took this film and made it what it was.
But, it has to be said that I'm really not a Batman fan. I didn't see Batman Begins, and I don't really plan to. So I like to believe that I'm not biased about this film. The outstanding reviews I had read about Ledger's performance is what finally spurred me into going to see it, after having previously turned my nose up at it. It took me a while to realize that the movie was supposed to be about Batman.
It's possible I'll go to see the next one, but I kind of doubt it. I think this film was good as a stand-alone movie, even without seeing the first one, and I would hate to see such an awesome movie be tarnished by the Hollywood tendency to squeeze every last penny out of a series.
  • Tranque · 1 year ago
I just thought I'd add one more comment, in response to Samantha's quirk about the makeup.
I do agree that part of it wasn't especially realistic. Without an eyelid, his eye would soon dry up and be blinded, if I remember correctly. Which, it's entirely possible that I don't, but whatever. And, yes, it's hard to believe that his jaw bone could have been so severely seared as to expose bone and gum, but his eye wasn't. Overall, though, I think that the make up was about as realistic as you can get for a burn victim without being ...well, I was going to say horribly grotesque, and it was a bit of a shock, but not nearly as much as it would be on a real human face. I liked this portrayal of him. I may not be a Batman fan, but I did some character research after the movie piqued my curiosity.
Someone COULD survive with that severe degree of burns and live with a partially exposed face. And really, what else could he look like? His face was covered in fuel, which caught on fire after the explosion. In real life, he'd be pretty lucky to have any skin at all there.
Just pointing it out. :) Thanks.
  • Bornfool · 1 year ago
the movie did showcased the born of Two face, but I think Joker was also reborn in the movie.
  • Speedy · 1 year ago
If Harvey Dent woke up from the fall and escaped from the police, Commissioner Gordon wouldn't dare hold a funeral and declare that Dent died a hero. If he were to return, all of Gotham would immediately recognize that Two Face is really Harvey Dent and the administration would be caught red-handed in a huge lie.

    Heath's performance was stupendous. Mezmerizing.
  • Anonymous · 1 year ago
Of course Harvey Dent is not dead. His character is present in Batman (1989) and Batman Forever, which all take place after the current Batman timeline.
  • Ryan · 1 year ago
Dent is dead. Begins and TDK have nothing to do with Batman and Forever.
  • Butcher · 11 months ago
R U retarted? Harvey Dent did not die. They buried the "white knight" that he was because he has turned evil and they do not want the city to see that. I am absolutely certain he is not dead and think about it. Why introduce a villain into a movie for 30 minutes and just kill him off when he is a main villain? The third batman is all about Two-Face, everybody who isn't stupid knows he is not dead.
  • Butcher · 11 months ago
He is not dead. They were saving his "white knight" image for the public so they believe that he is still good. Nobody in Gotham wants to see the most pure and good-hearted person in all of Gotham fall to darkness. The saved his good memory. And Commisioner Gordon understands he was twisted by the Joker and he knows the real Dent wouldn't have done that.
  • Ryan · 11 months ago
Evil and Dead are not the same. Harvey Dent is deceased. As is Two-Face. I understand that Batman saying he killed those people was to protect Dent's image, but they aren't hiding his death. Just his crimes.

Harvey Dent and Two-face are BOTH DEAD!!! DDDDDDDDDDUUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
  • captainchump · 10 months ago
I think I'll be stoopid and say that one is dead, but the other turned into the Dark Lord Sauron. You IDIOTS!!! THE JOKER IS ALWAYS RIGHT. HARVEY DENT IS DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU SEE HIS FUNERAL/MEMORIAL SERVICE AT THE END, RIGHT AFTER YOU SEE HIM LYING DEAD ON THE GROUND.

Always remember, Indepedence Day is awesome.

The Joker's rictal wounds was a clever choice on Nolan's part. The wounds must have been self-inflicted; for someone to cut themselves in such a manner once would demonstrate profoundly poor judgement, but to do it again would just be plain crazy dizi izle . (FYI: Earlier you meant to use the word "canon" instead of "cannon.")
