Film School Rejects: The 14 Must See Movies of Awards Season 2008

  • Scott · 12 months ago
Great list...not sure if I agree with slumdog being #1.
  • Belmos · 11 months ago
want to see The Dark Knight movie........ it looks horrible.
  • Jack Vermicelli · 11 months ago
"And though my gut tells me that the Academy will put Pixar’s Wall-E into the “cartoons” category and let the adult movies play for Best Pic, I can’t argue that it is among the best films of the year. A truly masterful work..."
This seems contradictory, and is confusing. If it's a masterful work, and you disagree that the movie should not be relegated to the cartoons category, why couldn't you argue the case?

Read the bad reviews for "Slumdog Millionaire" on IMDb. It isn't pretty. Yes, I know the reviews aren't written by pretentious, wanker critics who use clever prose to explain why a film is good or bad. But so what?

The only films I haven't seen on that list that I plan on actually seeing are "The Wrestler" and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button".

I hope this was meant to be a joke... I doubt it though. How did Tropic Thunder and WALL E beat The Dark Knight?
  • Davebaxter1989 · 11 months ago
Only seen Frost/Nixon, Wall-E, Tropic Thunder and The Dark Knight of this list but I do have Milk, Man On Wire, Doubt and Gomorrah sitting just waiting to be watched with the top three hopefully adding to that list soon.

you can see it though. read my post above and then comprehend that I manage to live in Scotland haha

Quite a few contenders on this list and some great movies, although I would have to protest Milk being on the list, the movies story is very lacking in originality, Sean Penn is very over rated as an actor and proves it here in my opinion and it's hard to overlook him being a jerk in real life when watching him in a movie.

I wish you would have included "In Bruges", then it would be perfect. Thanks!

Film Award seasons are retarded. They give nominations to films given a limited release in the final week of a year? Come on! If a film is going for best film in 2008, I want to have seen it!
  • Michelle_FSR · 11 months ago
There are so many movies in that list that I haven't gotten to see yet (either because they've not been released over here or because I just didn't get to them when they were). Thanks for the reminder about them, otherwise they'd just have slipped away again.

By the way, I agree with your logic on placing The Dark Knight so low on the list, as long as you're definitely not saying that it's of a lesser quality than the others!

Can't WAIT to see Slumdog... Danny Boyle is proving once again that he is an artist's artist, a genius among filmmakers! This movie is going to be fantastic!
  • Homero · 11 months ago
You obviously haven't seen Happy-Go-Lucky, Sally Hawkins has won at least 3 Best Actress awards already, and she'll definitely get the Oscar Nomination. Also, Kristin Scott Thomas' performance in I've Loved You So Long is far superior to Anne Hathaway's in Rachel Getting Married.

Awesome list. Great article. 2008 was a great year in film and these all show it.
Can't wait to see Man on wire and Frost/Nixon.

About Wall-E: "I can’t argue that it is among the best films of the year".

I think you meant: "I can’t argue that it _isn't_ among the best films of the year"

Only seen Dark Knight, Wall-E... will watch the rest at the earliest...

    Nice list you have here...

What about Changeling? That's one of the best films I've seen in a long time.
  • Mulebear · 11 months ago
You left out The Visitor. Outstanding performances all around.
  • random internet jerk · 11 months ago
wall-e was the most boring dug out film i've ever seen, would have been great as a short story type film but those greedy assholes needed a full length feature to put it in theatres

literally just saw slumdog and once again (the beach notwithsatanding) danny boyle blew me away. phenomenal. seriously. and, as much as i love christopher nolan and the idea of a comic movie taking home best picture, slumdog deserves the award. though, i do love darren aranofsky (the fountain didn't get any of the recognition it deserved) and the wrestler looks fantastic. so, i'll have to see that before i'm sure. p.s. the fall is also up there with slumdog and should get some love as well.
  • ross · 11 months ago
Slumdog had such promise, but I could only take so much brutality and torture of children and had to leave. It's a shame, too, because lots of it was exhilarating.
  • abdul · 10 months ago
The torture of children while horrible, was also brief. You missed a good movie. The suffering only added to exciting ending.
  • Blatman · 11 months ago
More fanboyism at work. Neither the Dark Knight now Heath Ledger's performance were Oscar-worthy. Don't get me wrong, the movie was incredible, but not as good as the hype.
  • Anthony · 11 months ago
So You basically make the list from metacritic.com . Awesome job.
  • Sophia · 11 months ago
Charlie Bartlett should've been on that list.
  • Do Some Research · 10 months ago
Ok, you do realize that Benjamin Button is an F. Scott Fitzgerald story, right? You know, the guy who wrote a bunch of stuff including The Great Gatsby. It's really not Fincher's tale, and therefore you really cant call him inventive, sorry.
