Film School Rejects: The 10 Best Revenge Movies of All Time

  • Darryl · 6 months ago
Sweet list of revenge movies...truly some great film productions..I would say Gladiator and Kill Bill I would be on my list for sure...I'll have to put Straw Dogs and The Virgin Spring onto my Netflix list.
  • WWJGD · 6 months ago
    No Man on Fire? Ouch
  • adamluo · 6 months ago
    Oldboy...
  • Robert Levin · 6 months ago
Don't know about Man on Fire. Hardcore revenge flick? Sure. Worthy of a top ten list? Don't really think so. Oldboy, on the other hand, is a significant omission.
  • Cole_Abaius · 6 months ago
    Yeah, there's a definite American-film bias here, but it's a solid list.

An even more solid list would have included I Spit on Your Grave, but this one is pretty great. The Virgin Spring is an inspired choice, and I think people tend to forget that Ben Hur is a revenge film.

Would Spartacus be a revenge film too, maybe? Seems like there's a lot of Roman angst.
  • benaminc · 6 months ago
    I second Oldboy.
  • katy · 5 months ago
um.. yes. thank you. somebody here has some sense! the fact that it wasnt even an honorable mention on this list makes its creators clinically retarded.
  • gray · 6 months ago
Gosh, guys, c'mon.. what about John Tucker Must Die?
  • Dan · 6 months ago
    Heavyweights, anyone?
  • G2D2 · 6 months ago
No Shawshank? Automatic bury on Digg.
  • Cole_Abaius · 6 months ago
That's ridiculous. Shawshank isn't nearly a revenge film. But remaking Shawshank as a revenge film is a fantastic idea. Andy could store up shivs, cutting through all the guards with wanton bloodlust then forcing the men that raped him to rape each other to death.

He then shoves money down the warden's throat before blasting him in the stomach with a twelve gauge.

And best of all, once out of prison he hunts down the jury, judge and DA that wrongfully imprisoned him.

Then cuts out his own tongue.
  • Steve · 6 months ago
Shawshank isn't a revenge flick at all. The guy who killed Andy's wife never got what was coming to him. Andy didn't get revenge, he just made something amazing from a terrible situation. It was redemption, really, and it took place at Shawshank. Maybe we could put that one on a "top ten most literal titles" list...
  • Phil Wheat · 6 months ago
This list is missing 2 classic 80's revenge flicks: Savage Streets and Class of 1984
  • Ape tooth · 6 months ago
Good list, but I was hoping to see Braveheart (that's revenge isn't it?..the bad guy kinda slits his wife's throat and Wallace builds an army to fight a whole country for it.) ...And Gladiator is one of my favorite movies, I don't see how it's overrated in any way...

I agree with all the rest, keep it up.
  • Samir · 6 months ago
I have no idea how Commando can be #10 on this list. Aside from the brutality of the revenge...Arnold at his "peak" and the multitude of one-liners can only mean one thing...Robert Levin hates Austrians.

"Let off some steam, Bennett. "

"I eat Green Berets for breakfast. And right now, I'm very hungry! "

"Don't disturb my friend, he's dead tired. "

"Remember, Sully, when I promised to kill you last?"
    "That's right, Matrix. You did."
    "I lied."
  • Cole_Abaius · 6 months ago
    Seriously.

    "Right?"

    "Wrong!" (Shotgun blast to face)
  • beez · 6 months ago
Have you seen Crash? That's the worst best picture winner of all time.
  • entertainmenttod · 6 months ago
I agree with Death Wish. In its time it really hit a nerve. Bronson just had whatever it is that makes one a star and he was in his 50's when he made this film. I also consider Death Wish 3 one of the best B movies ever made. Its so over the top but it sure is entertaining.

What happened with Kevin Costner's REVENGE?
  • wKen · 6 months ago
    Oldboy!
  • Bendi999 · 6 months ago
What????? No Man on Fire????? No Count of Monte Cristo????? I followed the link from IMDB just to see where Man on Fire ranked and nothing. I respect your opinion though, wait who am I kidding, no I don't, your list sucks!!!!
  • Jan Mozelewski · 6 months ago
I tend to think that it is fashionable to Under Rate Gladiator. It was beloved by pasionate people like artists and sportsmen for a reason. The themes are universal and it plays like Grand Opera. Its about emotional response making a bridge to another world long ago. It awakened interest in History in many people because it did this. It isn't meant to be al movie that addresses the intellect directly. It goes past that and hits a core of truth.
In doing so I find it actually appeals to genuine intellectuals and creatives in all walks of life. They people who don't feel it are those who are in the middle ground ....who neither enjoy the ride on a pure action basis, nor find it obviously 'clever'. They need to read some Shakespeare, I am afraid.
  • Bob · 6 months ago
Or it could be because Russell Crowe is a douche
  • PhiL · 6 months ago
i'm sure when the next DVD/blu-ray release of another revenge comes out, expect this list to be revised...again.
  • djjeffhall · 6 months ago
I know it's not the best film, but I'm still biased toward the new Bond, Quantum Of Solace. Then again, that DC-3 chase scene is great and worthy of a mention.
  • nick · 6 months ago
Count of Monte Cristo should have been on it
  • modad · 6 months ago
No Revenge of the Nerds? It's got "revenge" in the title, what more do you need?
  • andy406 · 6 months ago
    Um...

Dude, seriously. The Count of Monte Cristo is the ultimate revenge story of all time. The movie should at least deserve an honorable mention.

    And how about Oldboy? Dogville?
  • Jon Park · 6 months ago
what the heck? what about braveheart?? william wallace declares war on the empire for killing his woman!
  • Inigio Montoya · 6 months ago
Came for the Count of Monte Cristo.

    Left disappointed.
  • Cat9 · 6 months ago
The Count of Monte Cristo is a good revenge story, but is there a film that has done justice to the book?
  • Erik · 6 months ago
    No Boondock Saints????
  • loserwithnotaste · 6 months ago
Payback, Count of Monte Cristo, and Boondock Saints. Top 3 for me, not even on the list.
  • John · 6 months ago
    2nd Payback.
  • Dorkatron · 6 months ago
Humm .. I know all these movies are USA produced films .. but this one just clearly comes to mind when "revenge flick" is uttered, OLD BOY. Its a Korean made film but you just have to see it for it the most mind wrecking, gut wrenching revenge plot ever to be shown on the silver screen. Supposedly a US remake is in the works for this great movie.
  • Andrew · 6 months ago
Sergio Leone's last western was "Duck, you sucker" (A fist full of dynamite), not "Once upon a Time in the West," although I agree with its inclusion in the list.
  • joe · 6 months ago
    no oldboy? wow
  • sonofDante · 6 months ago
yeah really best revenge movie ever
  • SirLowKey · 6 months ago
"Day of the woman" aka "I spit on your grave" (1978). From the times of Betamax, VHS and VC2000...

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077713/
  • Manda · 6 months ago
    Agreed!
  • Oh Daesu · 6 months ago
no revenge movie list is complete without OldBoy in the top 3.
  • Doug · 6 months ago
High Plains Drifter / A Few Dollars More
    Payback
    V for Vendetta
  • Dave · 6 months ago
What about the korean vengence/revenge trio of Sympathy for Mr. Revenge, Oldboy, and Lady Vengence. Check them out, they are great!
  • Pimenta · 6 months ago
Should be called "The 10 Best American Revenge Movies of All Time".
Any revenge movies list without Oldboy in top place is idiotic.
  • Jack · 6 months ago
What about Finding Nemo? That bastard got what was coming to him.
  • orest · 6 months ago
    nothing from vengeance trilogy lololol
  • Greg · 6 months ago
Bendi999 beat me to it but... Man on Fire is an EXCELLENT revenge movie. I agree with the story of Monte Cristo being good but the movie sucked... a little.
  • George O. Riley · 6 months ago
    Payback !!!!
  • clint · 6 months ago
You committed a crime against humanity for not including Old Boy
  • Jaye · 6 months ago
I completely agree with Deathwish at #1.

Have not seen Oldboy but when I Googled it, the second hit was an IMDB reference to an American version due out in 2010, starring Will Smith and directed and/or produced by Steven Spielberg. 'Nuff said (sigh).

As for the other choices, I guess it depends on what you define as a revenge film. I think some of the choices and suggestions are too broad in scope; I like the idea of it being one person seeking pesonal, one-on-one revenge, a la Death Wish. Death Wish was (and is) a terrific social commentary on vigilantism in an era when people fely increasingly overwhelmed and powerless in the face of rising crime and decaying cities.
  • Filmy Zen · 6 months ago
Without Oldboy, this list has gotta be a joke. And Godfather is really not a revenge movie.
  • shane · 6 months ago
Doug is on it!! V for Vendetta - must see
  • Seth · 6 months ago
How bout "Falling Down" with Michael Douglas? A movie about a guy who takes revenge against the whole damn world.

    :D
  • Danny · 6 months ago
Anyone who makes a revenge movie list and doesn't list Oldboy... hasn't seen Oldboy.
  • Robert Levin · 6 months ago
To all my Oldboy critics: I have seen Oldboy and I just didn't include it. So sue me.
  • joemama420 · 6 months ago
Pretty good list, although the lack of Oldboy is somewhat distressing.

And for full-on-single-minded-overtake-every-facet-of-the-main-characters-life type vengeance one need look no further then The Salton Sea.
  • Carlos · 6 months ago
    Oldboy...
  • random · 6 months ago
definitely oldboy and the british independent Dead Mans Shoes, one of the greatest revenge films, not as sick as oldboy but still great
  • Mike · 6 months ago
    OLDBOY!!!!!!!!!!
  • penisbreath · 6 months ago
This list sucks, you just picked old films with no regard for real modern Cinema. What about Lucky Number Slevin? There are so many you failed to mention in place of the shit you put on here but I won't even get into it...
  • C. Wolf · 6 months ago
Gangs of New York? Count of Montey Cristo? Who the hell calls the Godfather a revenge movie?
  • Eata Bowladiikkup · 5 months ago
    Fuck BOONDOCK SAINTS.

What's missing here is BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF, which doesn't start off as a revenge story but sure as hell ends as one... and of course Park Chan-Wook's Vengeance trilogy. But if you think OLDBOY doesn't make the cut as one of the ten best revenge movies of all time, and somehow BEN-HUR does, then you're only discrediting yourself.
  • traxx · 5 months ago
Eastwood's Unforgiven? Costner's Revenge was good, too... although watching him act is tough.
  • D.G · 5 months ago
Yeah I would have pitched god father and one other and put in unforgiven and Count Of monte Cristo, but hey it is a decent list, not great but decent.
  • Timmy · 5 months ago
Lucky Number Slevin gets my vote.
  • JohnnyFuckinUtah · 5 months ago
Unforgiven, Man on Fire, and The Count of Monte Cristo all desserve to be there
  • Eriqqartman · 5 months ago
I agree on Man on fire. What about Kill Bill?
  • omg · 5 months ago
WHAT ABOUT THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO?!!?!!?
  • deathnutz · 3 months ago
Um... what about PAYBACK! or PUNISHER?
  • new movies dvd releases · 3 months ago
hmm thought for sure Revenge would make the list. awesome movie with anthony quinn and kevin kostner. hmm now I have to watch that again
  • new movies dvd releases · 3 months ago
Oldboy is a good one. Some viewers may be put off by the fact that it is a Korean film with subtitles only, but it is still a very good film.
  • Leo Cancio · 1 month ago
but what about thriller: a cruel picture? it may be one of the very first revenge movies, and it was completely banned in sweden and america until 20 min. of film was cut out of it. its amazing, if you can find it.
  • marcusphoenix00 · 1 month ago
wat about the count of monte cristo
  • Name · 1 month ago
No rolling thunder? In fact, how old is rolling thunder- possibly older than death wish??? what's coller than a nam veteran with a spike for a hand getting his revenge? that's a rhetorical question.
  • milena1311 · 3 weeks ago

"Perhaps the ultimate revenge movie" at #7?
