Film School Rejects: Ten Things We Demand from Iron Man 2

  • Mister Hand · 1 year ago
In the Howard Stern interview referenced in a previous article, Favreau I believe made it explicitly clear that Mandarin was going to be the "big bad" of IRON MAN 2. Howard was lobbying, as a matter of fact, to be cast as Mandarin. So...

Howard Stern as Mandarin. That's what I want to see.

If you watch the making of doc, there's a segment on the shooting of the scene (which I don't think made the deleted material) where Stark gets back from being held hostage, and Jarvis tells him about his messages. It's not hard to hear, but turning on the subtitles will definitely let you see that Jarvis mentions the number of all his messages, and finishes with... "and one from The Mandarin."

Another thing Tony Stark might have to deal with is his new found status as a "superhero" since he outed himself at the end of the movie.
Stark was a bit of a celebrity before with his rich playboy antics, but now that he flies around in a high tech suit, how will he deal with the extra attention?

I demand Iron Man 2 not suck like the first one did.

AIM is actually a perfect villain for Iron Man. They have opposing ideas of how technology should be used and make a good counter to Stark Enterprises.

    10. Alcoholism: I really don't see a "Demon in the Bottle" type story emerging in the movie universe. We did see Tony knocking back alot of drinks in the first movie, but I just think that having a serious alcohol related storyline (anybody remember Superman?) would kill what was the best thing about the first movie, namely it was fun.

    9. Armor Wars Tease: Kinda covered in the first movie. The Iron Monger suit was basically stolen IM tech. But it would be cool to see Tony up against multiple suits.

    8. A Terrible Villain: I'm totally on board for this. Really to keep the fun factor high. To a point though, maybe someone lame Tony can take out in the first couple of minutes of the movie.

    7. Womanizing: Har har har. Cannot disagree.

    6. SHIELD: Stark designing the helicarrier or recurring SHIELD operatives apperaing across all the Marvel movies would be awesome. Dugan and Quartermain :)

    5. In Continuity Cameo: I'm sure these are very much part of the plan in the build up to the Avengers movie. With Mr. Downey Jr. already having appeared as Tony Stark in the Hulk movie I'm sure we can look forward to more "cross-pollination".

    4. Hydra or AIM: I have a feeling the so-called "Ten Rings" are set to be the main menace.

    3. Modified Armor: If Hulk's the big bad in the Avengers movie, I'm sure we'll see a Hulkbuster suit at some stage. Although I wouldn;t want them to mess with the suit too much. They really nailed it the first time around.

    2. The Mandarin: From the interviews and reports I've read it seems that the Mandarin will be looming in the shadows having his dirty, ringed fingers involved throughout the franchise, possibly a smaller role in IM2 and the main villain in IM3.

    1. War Machine: You're not alone. After all that's why signed on to play the character in the first place. So I think it's pretty much guaranteed.

@ Robert Fure- "No comic movie has really introduced a laughable villain and easily dispatched him right off the bat"

You obviously don't remember Mr. Freeze in Batman and Robin, huh? ;) I kid.

How about a better film score and a better cast villain. 1. the film score was incredibly cheesy it took me out of the film completely. 2. Jeff Bridges the dude? I know the guy can act but hearing his voice in that suit was simply hilarious. HEEEEY TOOOOOOOOOOOONY.

The best thing would be if more elements from the comic books could be tied into a sequel in a subtle way that gratified people who've read the comics without losing the people who haven't.

As for Iron Man 2, I would make Ultron the main villain. In the Ultimate Marvel Universe, Ultron was created by Hank Pym (Ant-Man) as an army of robots designed to be expendable super soldiers. In the Marvel Adventures Universe, Ultron is a highly-intelligent "neural network" that was created as a computer-based national defense system. I think a hybrid of these two versions would fit well into Favreau's Iron Man universe, kind of like Skynet in the Terminator movies. It would also be a great way to introduce the Vision, one of my favorite Avengers, who was created by Ultron to kill Pym.

Seems Armor Wars is a easy way to keep continuity into IM2. The pressure Tony is placing on himself to hunt down his stolen tech, could also lead into heavier drinking. This could even turn into a 'problem' were here 'blunders' and takes refuge in the bottle.
A good way to get Rhodes into it is he 'answers the call' when Tony is in the bottle. Say Fury has a emergency needing Tony/IM, and Rhodes finds/confronts a stupered Tony and decides to respond himself donning Tony's latest armor WarMachine. Of course we don't know its actually Rhodes until we're in the action of this emergency.

Mandarin is a good choice for the key villian in IM2, mystisim vs. technology. Which ever key villian they pick they should build upto the 'big' confrontation of course. But once they have Rhodes as a IM, then any big ending fight would seem to have Tony and Rhodes. But in my opinion there should only be one man as the face of IM at a time. The 'handing over of the torch' to Rhodes should be tought out ... Tony is IM. Once they link Rhodes to WarMachine, then Rhodes would/should part ways and is out of future IM movies.
Any story should work on Tony's character ... Tony the man is "Iron Man" He's armor is only one reflection of his character. So continue to play up his playboy life style, work in more of his inner struggle with accountabilty with his tech to protect and 'benefit man' He is at war with himself and what he has done/does (a blunder effecting innocents as IM and he turn to the bottle, set back in fight his personal demons).

One if the things I really liked about IM1 was the wit and humor Robert Downey Jr brings to Tony's character, please please keep this ... but Tony needs to face off with his 'Darkside' and have the Man of Iron emerge.
So in conclusion a Armor Wars focus is a great start, and a lead into the Mandarin a must. Perhaps Tony should lose this round in the finial fight scene ... 'down but not out' And in IM3 we see the true Iron Man bring down The Ten Rings/Mandarin. ... can they pack this into one movie of 2hrs? And last thought is Rhodes (WM) faces off with Mandarin as IM, second time in the armor, and is getting the worst of fight, and Tony (IM) pulls himself together enough, 'smashing the bottle', to come to the aid of his friend in a tight spot. Mandaring is defeated ... but escapes this fight, to face Tony another time.
