Film School Rejects: Talking Points: Oscar’s Big Surprises

Although "American Gangster" was my choice for the best film of 2007, I will admit that Ruby Dee has no business being nominated for an Oscar. It's funny how they nominated Dee and yet didn't bother to nominate the film for every category it did deserve.

I'm not really surprised by Brad Bird's nomination for screenplay. Shrek was nominated back in the day, and Ratatouille is a far better script than that one.

It's understandable that Dee was nominated for her 12 minutes on screen in American
Gangster. Kim Stanley won for only 10 minutes on screen (The Right Stuff) so this isn't a
    record.

Dee has always turned in fine performances over many years and the Academy
frequently votes for someone with an acting record like that, not that I agree with the
    practice.

Besides, the Academy never recognized her late husband, Ossie Davis, and they
sometimes try to make up for omissions like these.

Are you saying that Into the Wild is detestable? It was a great film. Wtf?
