Film School Rejects: Start Gearing Up for ‘Dark Knight’ Sequel in 2011

I really hope they don't rush this into production just because TDK made loads of cash. The reason why it was so good is because it wasn't rushed. They took the time to write a great script and cast if perfectly. Nolan took the time to get the shots perfect. No good can come from this being rushed into production.

I hope if they do make it, it's only because they have a good story to tell. If they do, then great. As far as villains are concerned, I'd love to see the Riddler included. I think it could be cool AND fit into Nolan's Gotham city. Here's my little take on it:

There is a comic storyline involving the Riddler where Riddler is a good guy, a detective, hired by Gotham PD. He became obsessed with finding out who the Batman was. Now, I’ve never read the story, so I could be wrong on the details. Batman fans, I’m sorry! Anyway, since Batman assumed the role of the hated man in Gotham at the end of TDK, we could include a modified version of the Riddler storyline. Namely, Gordon’s superiors and or the public, call for Batman to be brought to justice. Edward Nigma (The Riddler) is the brilliant yet odd detective hired to track down the Bat so they could bring him to justice. Trying to solve this riddle proves to be too difficult for Nigma, and he starts to go insane. He sets up test/riddles for the bat to solve in order to stop something bad from happening (Public building exploding, innocent people dying) All the while he observes the bat and tries to deduce who he is. The city does not know Nigma is behind all of this. In the end, Nigma’s falls into the depths of complete and total insanity, and exposes himself as the Riddler, in a last ditch plot to catch/kill the bat so he could ultimately find out who he is. Nigma puts innocent lives in the line of fire. Batman comes in, cue climatic battle, Batman saves the day and redeems himself in the eyes of Gotham.

They could also twist it to have Nigma discover Wayne is the Bat, but I don’t have any good ideas for how to do that and keep the plot interesting. They should probably have a minor villain in the beginning, keeping Batman busy until Nigma goes insane, so maybe Black Mask, Deadshot, or Victor Zsasz.

    Any thoughts?

You know Cole, just because AICN has a news post with the word "Batman" in it doesn't mean it's true, nor does it mean it deserves to be repeated here.

That said, I'm psyched about this news! Come on 2011!

It'll be a Royal Rumble of Comicbooks for 2011, Batman, Captain America, and The Avengers. Now I'm hoping Marvel can live to it's hype with Captain America, and The Avengers. Maybe Nolan would like to put a cameo from Clark Kent and Lois Lane for a crossover to World's Finest (just being ambitous ;)).

That actually sounds like it could make a great movie is it was written well. Lets do it.

I'm only going to get excited when I hear from Nolan.

Captain's right. A 2011 release would be fighting with the Avengers flick. A true Marvel vs. DC battle royale. But kinda like Rodden said, I'm not holding my breath.

Yes, 2011 will be a great year for comic geeks everywhere. I'm really looking forward to it.

I'd like to see another Batman, but I don't think Nolan is ready to do one right now. It probably won't make it to theaters before 2012

    Here we go again,,,

I don't know if I can live through another 3 years of Batman Viral marketing....

    I'm getting dizzy already.

You really didn't like the viral marketing for TDK?

I don't think they'd do it again unless they use the Riddler as the villain. They did it because it fit with the villain of the film. And it would fit with the Riddler too, they'd put up a bunch of Riddles all over the web.

Still though, I think the biggest thing about the viral marketing success was the fact that it was the Joker. He is an iconic villain, and there is a lot of intrigue in all of that. What is Joker gonna do next. It was fun, in my book.

This is James Gilks (owner of SerialKillerCalendar.com) personally I would love it if they took the idea of the Riddler to a very dark extreme. His character is very close to real life serial killers like David Berkowitz (the son of sam) and the Zodiac Killer. Many serial killers (including Jack The Ripper and The Red Spider) have sent letters to the police and the Zodiac killer sent cryptograms (which where in essence a type of riddle). I think that if Hollywood is willing to take these films to the gritty dark side of real life, they should focus more on this angel and abandon the tacky jump suit wearing, cartoon aspect that Jim Carey brought to the screen. I would love to see a down right evil and twisted serial killer side to the Riddler.

I also believe that they are setting up The Mad Hatter for a future movie. If you watch carefully, Batman says that the man Dent is interrogating in The Dark Knight (the creepy smiling guy from the ambulance) is named "Jervis Tetch". This is The Mad Hatter.

Lastly, I would love to see all these films come together in to a plot that involves Arkham Asylum. There have been many amazing graphic novels that focus on this (especially "A Serious Place on Serious Earth"). This would be a perfect opportunity for the writers to place Batman against not only a huge cast of badies but also against his own troubled mind.)

Well, thats just the opinion of someone who runs a company devoted to selling serial killer merchandise so you can take it or leave it. I hope you can all stop by SerialKillerCalendar.com to pick up some morbid merch (including the new Serial Killer Magazine, Serial Killer Trading Cards and Serial Killer Action Figures. I know, its a shameless display of self promotion but really, I have to justify reading up on Batman Movies while I am supposed to be working somehow.

The Riddler would be a good choice for the next movie. Though his motivation could never be as disturbing as the Joker's ("watch the world burn"= terrifying), he definitely could match the Joker's ruthless theatrics and criminal genius. He could also easily be adapted to fit the realistic tone of the films.
But I also really like the idea of bringing in some unexpected villains such as Holiday, Zsasz or Black Mask. Zsasz particularly could reintroduce the problem left unsolved at the end of Batman Begins... where did all the homicidal maniacs from Arkham go?
At the same time, I'd really like to see Catwoman. She's fit in well with where the plot left off at the end of The Dark Knight (she is a talented burglar after all, and the mob lost a ton of money due to the Joker's little bonfire). And her black clad, whip wielding silhouette would complement the films' gothic style. I don't think she should be the main villain by any means, but she does bring some interesting complexities into the mix. As we've seen with Rachel, Bruce has a tendency to obsess over the women he's attracted to. What would it mean if he were to obsess over a villain, a person's whose actions run directly contrary to his own honorable convictions? His struggle with this attraction would certainly bring out the darkness and moral ambiguity in Bruce's personality, not to mention emphasize how human nature makes total incorruptibility impossible for Batman. In many ways, Catwoman could cause more trouble than the Joker in tempting Bruce to break the rules. Besides, I feel like Bruce's character wasn't explored as much as it could have been in The Dark Knight, and examining the object of a person's attraction can tell a lot about who that person is. So many possibilities... so tough...
But the important thing is to develop the main story, and the main story is the salvation or damnation of Gotham City and how Batman's role in this battle has brought out positive and negative extremes. As long as the villains fit into this plot, I don't see why the next movie won't be just as good if not better than The Dark Knight.
