Film School Rejects: Shouting Match: Is ‘Toy Story’ Overrated?

  • Joshi · 5 months ago
"Just because something was first doesn’t mean it was best"

That, I would suggest is the best thing about it, the fact he creators used CG as a tool and not a crutch. Had Toy Story been made with traditional animation, it probably would have been just as good, namely because the focus was on character and story. You can bet, had someone like Dreamworks attempted something like this, the focus would have on the spectacle of CGI instead of making a decent movie.

I'd have to say Josh pretty much dominated this one, and I agree that Toy Story is one of the best kid's movies ever made. Michelle, your argument was essentially just the fact that you disliked it. Fair enough, but you can't deny the movie was both innovative and set a precedent for the future of animated movies.
  • tomas · 5 months ago
Absolutely. At least Josh touched on content . . . but lacked a solid argument overall. I think most people would side with Josh only because they agree with him.
What makes a movie great? Innovation? Aesthetic? Story? I think that a story -- specifically its universality -- on top of a solid production is what separates the interesting and the F**King AWESOME. Why was the matrix so good? Every single 14 yr old first-time stoner got an intellectual hardon at the "maybe-nothing-is-real" idea well before it was ever put on screen. Likewise, what child didn't fantasize at one point or another that their toys would come to life when nobody was looking? The premise is simple and universal; nostalgic to adults, mind-blowing to kids. Throw in jealousy, self discovery and a villain who can find a perfect match in anyone's childhood memories . . . its damn near perfect.

Toy Story IS the best animated movie of all time. Other Pixar movies are good, but it's still the best. And Toy Story 2 is one of the best sequels ever made.
  • Isamu · 5 months ago
Toy Story 2 was the best sequels ever made but the question is will Toy Story 3 be almost as good or maybe will be better than Toy Story 2.
  • Dan · 5 months ago
well, some people like Toy Story 1 better than 2, and some like 2 better than 1, so I think it's safe to say that it will be the same way this time. It's pretty much guaranteed that it will be very good.

"Toy Story 2 was the best sequels ever made"

Too bad you can't prove this.
  • Davebaxter1989 · 5 months ago
You can't 'prove' anything with film though - It's subjective.

    ...it's not all about looks? i'm f*cked.

I like Pixar (and "Toy Story") very much although I'm not a fan of "Finding Nemo". I love Brad Bird's work, particularly "The Incredibles" and "Ratatouille" My problem with Pixar is the way John Lasseter got rid of Chris Sanders once the Disney-Pixar merger thingy went through.

There's no clear reason why, rumours suggest jealousy but I was so looking forward to "American Dog". From early storyboarding etc it's apparent it would've been much better than the "Bolt" it was turned into.

Ah well, Disney's loss is Dreamworks' gain!

Michelle - I'm sorry, but you are flat out wrong.

Bethany - If your writing is any indication, you are about far more than just looks. (Now I'm going to go hide under a rock before both these women beat the crap out of me.)

I know I'm in the minority here, but I'm with Michelle on this one. I've always found the love of Toy Story to be somewhat... Unfounded. Sure, it's a good movie, but nowhere near worth the praise it gets in my opinion. On that note I also found The Incredibles highly over rated.

I do agree with Michelle. In some ways.

Although I do agree that Toy Story is IMPORTANT I simply can't stand talking dolls. I hate dolls. Just like I hate talking cars. That keeps me from enjoying the overall Toy Story films and Cars as much as the others. But, as fierceful as my personal distaste about inanimate anthropomorphic talking objects is, I can enjoy a nice story nevertheless. The films are awesomely crafted, with awesome voice acting and characterization, and have all what it takes to be a good movie. But those are nowhere near the other classics Pixar put out. Not even close. Sure they are great, but there are greater out there, with better writing, action, characters and direction.

Unfortunately people can't let go of nostalgia. I do agree this movie is overrated. Just let go people.

Josh won the argument up to here: "Wrong like a woman breast-feeding in public."

There is nothing wrong with a woman breast-feeding in public. She is in fact feeding a child. Do you eat where you shit? Then don't complain about a woman not wanting to feed her baby sitting on a fucking toilet you mysoginist dickface.

I'm sorry, but Toy Story is a classic. It'll be up there in the halls with The lion King, Snow White, and all the other animated classics. It's not overratted, just good.

"fight club is overrated?" OH NO YOU DIDN'T! How is it overrated? I'd love to read your argument on that. You're forgetting it wasn't a huge box office hit, nor was it critically acclaimed. It found an audience on DVD. Just because people caught up with it and a lot of people saw it and liked it doesn't make it overrated. It means it finally found its audience. Ughh. I just hate when something gets popular its called overrated. Also, Tory Story rules.

"the movie also needs to be of a higher quality than its competition."

That from your closing argument is the main contention here as the majority say it is, you say it is not but we must also remember before Toy Story there wasn't really competition.
  • Nick · 5 months ago
I guess I'm the only one who thought Michelle won. They both seem to agree that other animated movies have better stories, or are funnier. To me that ends the argument Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, and Wall-E are the movies we should be talking about when asking the question of what the best animated film of all time is.

Is Citizen Cain the best movie of all time, it's a great movie, the first real epic movie and pioneered a LOT of film techniques that are still used today, and if you compare it to every movie that came out 20 years before and 20 years after it and it probably wins hands down but compare it to some of the more modern epic movies with half a billion dollar budgets and amazingly talented casts, does it really compete. Citizen Cain deserves our adoration and respect but it is no longer the greatest movie ever made.

One last thing about Toy Story, Most of the toy characters are multidimensional, but the humans all seem to be one dimensional, I'm sure this was decided at some point since the toys are the focus of the movie, hence the title. This is especially evident with Sid, he's pure evil, I certainly hope that theres a deleted scene somewhere where you can see his father abusing him, then showing him going to take out his rage on his toys.

The question wasn't whats the best animated film of all time though, it was is Toy Story overrated and in that there is no argument.
