Film School Rejects: Shouting Match: Does Quentin Tarantino Deserve the Hype?

  • Eric · 1 year ago
Uhh... He definitely is worth the hype. I know he does steal or borrow shots and dialog
from past movies, but I think he does make them his own in a way and almost all other
filmmakers do the same as QT, but just not as frequently. His dialog might not always
move the plot forward and maybe it doesn't bring incite into the characters, but it is
really cool and it definitely creates a certain atmosphere that adds to the film. Overall,
he makes good movies which are extremely pleasing visually, very entertaining, and they
have a lot more going on in them under the surface than 99% of the films made today.
Plus taking scenes from other films is very entertaining for me since I'm a film buff and I
always like recognizing the origin of scenes from his movies.

P.S. I really liked Death Proof, but I hated Jackie Brown.

I personally don't think QT is worth any hype. Don't get me wrong, some of his work is
visionary. But allot of it is truly over hyped.

Mind you I never met the guy, and don't know him at a personal level. But from what I can
gather he seems like an ignorant d-bag.

As long as you enjoy the movie, who cares what the story behind it is? I loved Pulp Fiction; Res Dogs was good; Kill Bill 2 was great. I never once thought to myself during those movies "wow, this dialogue is really QT." If you like the movie he made great, if you didn't quit bitching, it's just a movie.

Also, Kill Bill 1 was a bunch of nonsensical action scenes held together by a terrible narrative. Not everything he touches is gold.

    Tarantino is a sick fuck.
    :-)
He's definitlly run out of original ideas.
    Lol,,,, no but really.........
  • Sarah · 1 year ago
I don't think QT is worth the hype, he is all style and no substance... and if majority of his ideas are not actually his, then there really isn't anything left to him is it.
  • Tom · 1 year ago
OK, I think "Reservoir Dogs" , "Pulp Fiction" and "Kill Bill I and II" were pretty damn good. They were ground breaking films as much for their originality as for what they paid homage to.
But. and this is a BIG but, what has he done lately that is original? He seems to be stuck in a groove and unable to break out. Some of his movies actually sucked rhino, I.E. "Death Proof" half of the twin bill with Rodriguez's clearly superior "Planet Terror"

Don't get me wrong, I like QT's movies, but calling him great: I don't think so.

Yes he is worth the hype.If u think that just because a writting partner of his was over looked or because he “borrows” from other films u r wrong.Roger Avary was over looked because he didn’t write as much and most movie makers “borrow” from other films because they need inspiration.I have seen all of Quentin Tarantino’s films and have been blown away by each.Yes death proof was not his best film ever, but it was still a great film that is fun to watch again and again. My final statement about this is that yes i know he gets his inspiration for some of his work from other films, but the results are so unique and different it does not matter.I hope he continues to make his films and i wish him all the luck.

(I reposted this because I had to make a small change to my comment)

For all of you who think he is a "d-bag" grow up.He is not as ignorant as you all think he is accually a good guy and a great filmmaker.
  • Eva · 1 year ago
I like Tarantino's movies they're very entertaining and funny.
  • Robert Fure · 1 year ago
I think if you would ask Roger Avary, he would tell you a very different story about who wrote what. =)

As for borrowing and stealing, how can that even be uttered in the same sentence as "unique?" I would urge you to watch some of the films listed that he borrows from and then decide whether or not the results are still unique.

And I never said his movies weren't visually good or entertaining, it's just that he is nowhere near what his fanbase proclaims him to be.
  • JMoney · 1 year ago
Fure, I think you're getting caught up in the hype yourself. Yes QT is overhyped, just like The Dark Knight has been overhyped this summer, but that doesn't take away from how good the movie is. QT can't control the hype surrounding his career, he can only make his films. I personally enjoy his films, if you don't then fine. But many people enjoy them, and how else can we judge a piece of art than by whether people like it or not?

No he isn't the best filmmaker of all time, or his own time for that matter, but he has made a number of films that people would deem classic and millions have enjoyed. So I think the answer to the question is yes if by "worth the hype" you mean ignore the hype and just watch and enjoy his movies.

Couldn't have put it better myself, Robert. Great job

I think it boils down to an idea of being overrated, and hype definitely plays a role in that. Even if you like his movies, I think you'd have a tough time arguing that the guy isn't vastly overrated.

But, I can see why people like him. He shook things up during a time that desperately needed it, and that has to count for something. I think we're just seeing what happens when an icon has to continue working and start slowly heading downhill...

Well don't we as film geeks talk through pop culture references? So it is in fact real and with things like the madonna big dick story it doesn't move the story it just makes it feel real. In life not all conversations are integral to what we do just so QTs characters seem realer for it.
  • Sam · 1 year ago
I don't think Pulp Fiction should be brought into a conversation about QT's hype in the context you guys are using, or at least Robert was using, because the whole point of the movie (at least the way I look at it) was to be pop culture references / mindless drivel. That's what the actual term pulp fiction means. To quantify whether or not Tarantino lifts stuff from other movies or not, I just don't think it's fair. To him or Avary. (not that anyone is questioning Avary, but you get what I'm saying.)

Deathproof was garbage. Actually I thought both the Grindhouse movies were garbage.
  • Robert Fure · 1 year ago
    @David
Sure, film geeks talk like that, but do murderers, thieves, assassins, bank robbers, and general badasses relate to each other through interpretations of modern pop music?
  • Davebaxter1989 · 1 year ago
    @Robert

To be frank I would love to think so. But most likely no they do not but I don't want to see the film whereby they simply discuss murdering techniques and robbery tips lol
  • Loukas Tsouknidas · 1 year ago
I'm with Fure. Tarantino is fun but totally overrated as a creative mind. He also sells himself as a "brand name" in a masturbatory manner. He has a big way to go before he proves himself as more than a clever hack. We'll see...

I think the biggest argument that needs to be made, is about how Tarantino has exposed people to new genres and maybe made those people want to look up the films/filmmakers that inspired his movies or reside in the same genres. For me Reservoir Dogs was my entry to indie films and Tarantino's recommendation for Hero inspired me to go out and see more foreign martial arts films, same with Grindhouse and exploitation flicks. So if nothing else QT has inspired some cinephiles to venture out and see films they would normally not come across or know about.

QT is an amazing filmmaker. Look at his background... high school dropout, worked at a video store, part of the VCR generation, and is probably one of the most passionate filmmakers that doesn't take shit from anyone to change his films to please Hollywood. Many people are in the business for the wrong reasons. They make shitty films, like spoof films, stupid, no point films and were not complaining about that?! At least QT's work is done with passion. Other filmmakers have greatly influenced him, just like Shakespeare has pretty much influenced every great writer! QT, hands down, deserves the hype!

'Pulp Fiction(1994)' and 'Reservior Dogs' were very good (if not great) movies. Not exactly masterpieces. The Brilliant Samuel L. Jackson carried 'Pulp Fiction' throughout on his own shoulders and made it appear as great movie helped by dialogues of Biblical proportions (pun intended).

I'm surprised no one has brought up The French New Wave. I've only seen four new wave films. The 400 Blows, Breathless, Bande A Part(sound familiar?), and Shoot The Piano Player. It's very easy to see that the new wave had a heavy influence on QT. Breathless has some entertaining dialogue that makes many pop culture references. Shoot The Piano Player is a gangster/noir/comedy film that involves two gangsters, some kidnapping, interesting car rides, pop culture references, and more entertaining dialogue. QT borrows heavily from Bande A Part (Band of Outsiders) as well. In fact, there is scene in a RESTAURANT, where they talk about SILENCE in conversations, then get up AND DANCE. The reason I got into French New Wave is because I'm a film major and I saw 400 Blows in a class and it instantly reminded me of QT. I plan on watching a lot more French New Wave, hopefully I won't see other cool scenes from Pulp Fiction in them.

I get bored with his movies, i really liked his first few movies but after a while i could predict what was going to happen in all of the rest. Predictability is not a good trait in a movie. I started to see actual scenes from older movies in his shot for shot.
