Film School Rejects: Shooter

This is not really related to the article at all, but simply a seemingly offhand comment stated towards the end of the review that has puzzled me for the longest time. "It's better to just get the big tub of popcorn, the 82-ounce soda and sit in the front row." I understand the idea of enjoying a movie with a soda and popcorn in your hands. What I don't understand is the fascination with the front row. In all other forms of entertainment, the front row has been revered. However, in a movie theater, it has been my experience that the front row is by far the worst spot to pick in the theater. I was just curious as to why people prefer the front row. Is it the association that "front row" means the best experience? Or is actually your personal preference? Just curious.

Joe -- what you have to understand is that Kevin does everything big!! Such as with the 82 oz. soda and the tub of popcorn. For him, the bigger the screen looks, the better...

I would just think that the neck strain wouldn't be worth the trouble. But hey, everyone likes something different. If that's how he likes his movies, great for him.

I caught this on a whim over the weekend, and was surprised to have really enjoyed it, as you did. (Though I'd only afford it a B.) As far as dumb action movies go, it doesn't really get much better. However, I disagree with your assertion that the movie eschews the political; it does so only to the extent that it avoids big speeches, for the most part, but I got the impression that the whole film was informed by a maddening frustration with the state of the world today and the American political system that leaves people, not least of all the filmmakers I would guess, feeling impotent in their inability to affect the process. Therefore, to express this frustration, Wahlberg shoots everyone he can. That's how you make a difference and affect the process! Not to mention the blatant shot of the 9-11 Commission Report before Swagger asks his dog, "what lies are they trying to sell us today?" More on this in a week or so when I post a review!
