I do not want another Indiana Jones movie, but I'm not going to be like most people and sh&& all over Shia Labeouf. The last Indy movie was downright horrible but I blame everyone but the actors for that. Spielberg and Lucas are the ones to blame and I will still never forgive them for it. But I also don't think we can assume if another movie happened it would be terrible. I love the Indiana Jones franchise but lets all be realistic here, Temple of Doom was a horrible movie. So it's not like we had a holy trinity of greatness before Kingdom of the Crystal Skull came out. Who knows maybe the 5th movie will redeem the franchise. But for now I'll just assume it's not happening until it's greenlit. Then I'll start worrying.

Enough LaBeouf! Big fan of the Indy trilogy, but KotCS was a disaster. I don't put much of the blame on that doofus Shia, it largely falls on the shoulders of Lucas and Spielberg for OKing that awful script.

I really enjoyed KotCS, which might be a minority opinion in the world of fandom - but it was good, though far from great. But I fully believe that the problems the movie did have fall directly on the shoulders of Spielberg. A lot of people seem to want to blame Lucas (residual Star Wars prequel hate?), but I loved his ideas for the movie -- moving it from '30s action serials to '50s B-movie sci-fi, swapping Nazis for Commies, etc.. The problem was the script and the direction. Spielberg just didn't seem to really have his heart in it, and the movie suffered because of it.

Spielberg's heart wasn't in it because he was forced to do a lot of things he didn't WANT to do. Lucas had too much control, and the groan-worthy parts in the film were the result of Lucas not backing off.
  • clayton · 5 months ago
Well, Lucas definitely pushed his ideas into the various scripts and didn't really budge on them -- the Indy franchise is his baby, after all. But once the script was agreed on by all parties, Lucas steps aside and lets Spielberg do his thing. So, yeah - everybody loves to blame Lucas for shit, but Spielberg was the director and he was the one ultimately responsible for the overall quality of the movie. But nice try.

I might be (am) in the minority but i just don't like Shia. He is a complete tool off-screen and it hurts what he can do on screen. I think the is too nerdy for me to really jive with. Not sure how he became such a mega-star but directors seem to love the kid. Just MHO.

Indiana Jones is now like Star Wars to me. This last movie fucked it up so bad for me I don't care what they do, it'll be hard to bring me back in full swing.

But, the world owes KotCS a huge deal of gratitude because it made me so mad that I came up with "10 Things I Hated, 5 I Didn't" on the spot.

I've been thinking a lot lately about Indiana Jones - probably because all of my friends abandoned me, and I've had some free time - but I think the key to KotCS's failure was that the last Indy we saw was an incredibly moving flick. Last Crusade was poetic, dealt with father issues, dealt with eternity, dealt with living the right way, and it was fun as hell to boot. It seems with KotCS and now the future of the franchise, they are going for pure popcorn fluff instead of a joyride with a few stops at character-development junction and deeper-meaning station.

Also, commies make terrible villains compared to Nazis. Oh, no! They have a different form of government that they use! Holy God no! Boring.

They should just stop with these 'We'll com back and continue a much ended squeal of films'.
    C'mon Indiana Jones 5?!
That's like them suddenly announcing a Godfather 4, Lethal Weapon 5, Back To The Future 4. They're over, they're done, just leave it... We handled the 4th one, but yeah, Indiana is done.

I thought the end of Indy IV made it clear they were gonna make more movies with a LaBeouf being the new Indiana (with Ford having a sort of role that Sean Connery had in Last Crusade.

Temple of Doom is great fun, though people love to rag on it. Even if you don't like it as a whole, you have to admit it's got some amazing work in it. Crystal, OTOH, is ill-conceived to the very last anti-climactic shot. (People filing out of a church? Compare that to the closing shots of the other movies.) I'd rather they try another one than end it on such a low note.
