Film School Rejects: Sasha Grey: 15 Minutes With a Porn Star

  • jeflee · 6 months ago
I see your overall point about her cultural significance or lack thereof, but what actor on a publicity grind *doesn't* answer the same question the same way a million times? Especially when the questions are all the same, as they are especially with Grey. You admit part of this is your fault, but I'm not sure I see which part is hers, or anybody elses.

Hopefully this means you're finally coming around to the logical, smart side (aka my side) that Sasha Grey, like basically every porn star ever, is famous for porn and will never transition to anything not based around her being a gimmick.

Great piece (of writing, that is). And now I'm off to look me up some Sacha Gray... Finish this post in an hour, or two if she's really good.

I agree with fure on this one, she'll never be more than a gimmick. Hell, I MIGHT have seen the girlfriend experience just because it's soderberg, but I DEFINITELY want to see it just to see hot ass sasha grey try to act. It doesn't mean any less of her or the film, it might be nominated for an award or two, but only because of the gimmick. It's exactly like the wrestler using mickey rourke as a gimmick. But with better tits.

I don't know if it's so much of a gimmick than a PR move. Having her in the film will draw an audience who wouldn't bother to see the film. And the bottom line is they are trying to make money, even it they call it art.

Great article. Interesting stuff for sure, and an interesting situation. I'm afraid I completely agree with you, that this 'crossover' isn't really that, and doesn't really mean anything.

As beautiful and talented as she is (I haven't seen the movie though) there's obviously an INCREDIBLE hardness that has to come from being in the porn industry. And to truly cross over, US Weekly and People Magazine expect a lot more out of their celebrities. I'm not saying she needs to be Kate Hudson or something, but there's a fierce, 'ready for battle', hyper-rehearsed edge to her that is really off putting.

It will be interesting to see what happens. It's would be a completely new mold that's for sure.

"incredible hardness that has to come from being in the porn industry"

    That's what she said

Interesting and well-written article Cole. It's good to see that our Shouting Match from last October about Porn Stars Changing the Mainstream had a positive effect on your originally misguided viewpoint.

She was great in " I Wanna Bang Your Sister"... and seeing her in "The Girlfriend Experience" was a great role for her, she really took that as her own..
  • Davebaxter1989 · 6 months ago
She was also great in Cum Guzzlers 8, she really took on the role of 'Slut' and made it her on ensuring a fresh start for the ailing franchise that struggled after Cum Guzzlers 6.

I don't know why are you?

You guys picked the worst picture for her on the front page. Her right eye is half open like she's missing some sort of mental faculty, her face looks bloated - seriously, I could Google her name and find twenty way better pictures.

And yes, they'd be SFW. What kind of person do you think I am?

This is a great article Cole and the impression you got is pretty similar to what I felt when I interviewed her for a different publication and I wish I'd had the opportunity to go more in depth about it.

What's interesting to me is the probability that Soderbergh also recognized the same "showing you everything and giving you nothing" characteristic and cast her in some small part for that reason, as it's quite similar to the way Chelsea/Christine approaches her work.

That's a whole different discussion - how her personality lends itself clearly to playing a roll like that while taking a look at how Sasha Grey and her character are very, very different people. If anything, that's partially why I felt the movie worked (on a slightly better than average but way better than Bubble level). There are a few scenes that look like regional theater, but there are one or two moments where she shines through like a real person and you realize that her character is playing a role in life, keeping the armor on - it's not just that Sasha Grey is flat as an actress.

Did you get that same vibe from the movie?
  • djjeffhall · 6 months ago
    Cole,
You make some great points. I've read many of those same points before about whoever was yesterday's cross over porn star, but your eloquence outshines them all.

Side Note - Did she really make a film where she is punched in the stomach while fellating a guy? Do people get off on that? Wow, I'm (gladly) out of the loop when it comes to porn.

I've seen some of her work (porn), and I've seen her interviewed and have been reading much about TGE. I get the feeling she's the girl/boy in high school who says they're into poetry or philosophy and expects you to be awed, but in reality it's just a front. They're really not that deep at all. Just pay attention to the answers she gives to deep or contemplative questions, she doesn't really SAY anything.

I don't agree with you at all she comes across a nice human being.

Finally, someone who is able to write an article on her and realizing that there is more underneath the surface. And what lies beneath is nowhere near is amazing as what has been reported.

Most people will read one article and be stunned. Read a few more and you'll notice that not only are all the answers very well rehearsed, she will avoid the question when too difficult for her. Or even get cranky at the interviewer.
  • Train · 3 months ago
Dude, claiming that in some way its disingenuos for her to give you the same answers is ridiculous. If she claims to be presenting the real her, then why would she answer differently or seem different in various interviews. Surely the real her would give the same answers.
