Film School Rejects: Rumor Mill: Venom May Get His Own Movie

    Interesting concept mainly because as the main character, Venom would be one of the first comic book adaption following a purely evil character as the protagonist.

    Then again, I don't know enough about venom to speculate but maybe his motives are driven by something other than maliciousness.

    Venom started out as a bad guy but later became the "Lethal Protector." Sort of like The Punisher. He would fight crime, but would kill those who committed it. On the surface, this seems like a bad idea, but if they do it right (make Venom real big and real bad) it could be cool. Count me as a skeptic.

    Sam Raimi "stomped all over Venom's legacy" because he didn't want to make a movie with Venom in it. He wanted to use more classic villains like the Sandman, but he kept hearing from the studio that fans wanted to see Venom.

    Truth is, Venom is really not that interesting as a character, so he got about all the screen time in Spider-Man 3 that could be afforded to such a one-dimensional thug. I agree that Sam Raimi should be kept away from a Venom solo movie, but only because it's waaaay beneath him.

    Bee oh Bee, Venom is one of the top fan favorites of all time, and a personal favorite of mine. If you think he's one dimensional, you need to read some of his earlier storylines before he was "Lethal Protector."

    Eddie Brock was a complex religious character (didnt just happen to go to church one day for some reason) who had a seething hatred for Spiderman. And Brock never faked a photo, he was duped by someone who confessed. He was also one of the scariest and most dangerous threats to Spiderman, not triggering his spider sense and knowing all about his personal life and would constantly taunt Spiderman by showing up in his house and terrifying Mary Jane or messing with Aunt May. Venom is awesome.

    Robert, let me start by saying you're preaching to the converted here; I'm a flag-waving fanboy and not ashamed of it. I've read countless Venom storylines, and have never been impressed by any of them, except for the very last one when he died. I realize he's a "fan favorite," but he is a one-dimensional character who was constantly stuck in repetitive stories that, frankly, all run together.

    The Sandman should've been the focus of the movie; Venom and Harry Osborne should have hit the cutting room floor, as they made the movie utterly unwatchable.

    I'm in total agreement that Spiderman 3 ate dog doo and that Harry Osbourne and Brock/Venom was terrible. Not only terrible, but I think any bit of what made Venom a fan favorite (big ass evil monster) was stripped from the character when they tried to make him just evil emo spiderman.
