Film School Rejects: Rob Zombie Remaking ‘The Blob’ Without A Blob-like Thing

  • Aleric · 2 months ago
Rob has no one standing behind him to say, "Hey Rob, that is stupid, how about doing it this way". Instead he has a bunch of sychophants telling him he is the greatest director since John Carpenter.

I'd watch the movie you'd described.

Zombie has vision, but as a writer...that's where it gets fuzzy.
  • Chris R · 2 months ago
How can you make the Blob without a pink thing? I suspect he likes big black things better.
  • Ronk · 2 months ago
I actually like Rob Zombies movies. They have a great combination of over the top violence, humor and demented perversion.
  • chille · 2 months ago
Good to know you share my burning hatred for Rob Zombie, Hunter.
And seriously, how can you remake a movie without featuring the title character? Isn't that, you know, making another movie? Rob Zombie just knows original movies don't make money these days (Drag Me To Hell, for example) so he's just shamelessly hoping to get money off of name recognition.

I'm not really a zombie fan, but at least someone is trying to make R rated horror not for teens.

He might try too hard and his stereotypes might get eye rolling, but at least it is not the pansy PG13 crap that is usually made in the "horror" genre. At least he is not filming a compromise.

That being said: LEAVE HALLOWEEN ALONE, Rob. Move along. Although I could not care less if Zombie crapped all over a tie in to the original part 3.

    Rob,

I do hate the idea of Zombie making anything that's not his own work. Although the prospect of him doing a science fiction film is interesting. Give him a chance to prove you wrong before you slam his concept.
  • RobHunter · 2 months ago
As a writer/director he's already had several chances hasn't he? I've seen three of his four movies and all have sucked, so I don't think I'm being premature by slamming his future work. And come on... a remake of the blob without a big blob? That's just stupid.

That said, if his Blob ends up being great or even pretty good then I'll be the first one to praise it here.

well he's removing the giant monster/horror aspect from the sounds of things...making it more about an alien creature hence the science fiction angle rather than the whole movie monster cliche of the original movie...I hope he's using the 1988 film as "inspiration", I found that movie a lot more entertaining than most of the B-Movie remakes...I don't have a high regard for Zombie's Halloween, it was poorly acted and edited..so I'm not a massive fan of Zombie's overall work....I'm more excited to see The Haunted World of El Superbeasto than any of his upcoming stuff, to be honest

I think you're being a bit hard on Zombie. I didn't like House of 1000 Corpses when it first came out ,but I like it more now. Th Devil's Rejects is good. It really is. The first 10 minutes is bad because the only word anyone says is "fuck." He grew leaps and bounds between the two movies as well. His version of Halloween was only OK, but he grew technically as a filmmaker and moved away from his music video directing style which was great. The weak parts of that film broke down like this: 1. Didn't need to be remade. 2. Didn't need to see his childhood. 3. Weak/lame script for the first 40 minutes. After he was all grown up, the movie moved a little too fast (to come in on time) but the actual slashing was well done.

I haven't seen H2 yet. Will judge that later. As for remaking "The Blob" I think Zombie does have a point - a big red blob that slowly moves around isn't that scary. How about this instead - a fast moving, gelatinous creature. It still grows, but instead of piling up into a giant ball of goo, it's more of a fast moving, long, tidal wave of death. Capable of forming arms, claws, a mouth, etc, all this awesome shit to reach into your window, pull you out of your car and eat you. It can surround the building your in and suck you out or smash tentacles through the windows. It is an awesome alien.

Comic fans, think of Venom's symbiote, but on a massive, massive scale. Zombie, if you're reading this - that idea is all for you, buddy.

You wish I was being hard on Zombie, you perv. (I don't know what that means either.)

1000 Corpses and Rejects are both bad movies, period. The only growth evident between the two is in hiring a slightly better casting director. They weren't scary, dark, or profound, just annoying and stupid. I do agree with you for the most part on his Halloween remake. The whole first half with little girl Michael was painful to watch (not in the way Zombie intended either). Once he grew up and started killing it became more bearable.

And the 1988 blob already moved pretty damn fast.

Wait, Zombie is making a horror movie about a Marvel character?
  • ladyofthelake · 2 months ago
First off Zombie was a great musician.

Not a big fan of his films but he's right. A giant blob running after you is not scary, it's laughable. No director today would have the version of the blob we all know in a new version of the film. You'd be shitting all over the film if they did that. We don't need another version of the blob, it was a joke then and still is. All hollywood does now is make remakes.
  • chille · 2 months ago
If a giant red blob is not scary then why remake The BLOB.
  • ladyofthelake · 2 months ago
Because Hollywood has to remake everything.

i think rob zombie is a great director and his movies have yet to disappoint me and know plenty of people who enjoy his movies as well. The Devils Rejects is a great film, one of my favorites, and his other movies are fantastic. I think its sad you kick his ass and put down his vision before even seeing the film, you keep throwing "no big red blob?! whatttt thats gunna suck, blah blah" but im sure whatever his vision is it will follow the same type guidelines. Hes not just going to remaked "The Blob" but then change the whole premise of the film.
On a side note, i feel the fact that you are bashing Rob Zombie and his crew ("white trash" as you so kindly put it) is funny coming from you, one who doesn't direct/act nothing really creative or anything. Rob Zombie for a very long time has been doing things that he genuinely likes doing, not in hopes Rob Hunter would love it, not for any other reason than what he wants and likes doing.
You failed as a writer and you're article is disappointing to say the least

Rob Zombie is a complete fucking douchebag who i guess wasn't satisfied with ruining halloween and is now on to slaughter another classic. Sorry but FUCK HOLLYWOOD
  • thunderkiss65 · 1 month ago
Most people dont like his movies because theyre full of contreversy in every minute. Whether its extreme violence, nasty gore, or thousands of sex scenes. Personally, I like his writing and directing style and am anticipating his interpretation of "The Blob".

His version of HALLOWEEN really blew chunks! The original HAD VISION, it was the fact that Carpenter had no serious special effects or a lot of money that made it scary. The original Halloween's atmosphere and psychological terror was driven by the imagination of the viewers, you didn't have to see Micheal Myers throughout the whole film, but you knew he was watching his victims, you knew his presence was everywhere. The film built the audience up with shadows and creepy lighting, with Myers' breathing through the mask, the lack of technology in the 70's for this masterpiece allowed the mind to serve as a substitute. Zombies' vision was too much, too teenage 21st century crap!!! The origin of Micheal was a mystery in the original. THAT MADE IT SCARY!!! Dr. Loomis in the original was also a key ingredient. Carpenter presented Loomis to be the second most important character. Unlike the Loomis in the remake, whom didn't even have that philosophy or deep understanding of the evil that was loose in Haddonfield. You can't replace Donald Pleasence, especially a man that portrayed Heinrich Himmler! Loomis in the remake was more like a side character . The music also gave the original that fright! It was a simple piano sound with synthesiser, not Zombies' too over the top guitar riffs!!! Micheal was stealthy, not too violent, not too noticable, not too impatient. He didn't slam someone's hand into a stall door over and over, he didn't move fast! Micheal waited, studied the weaknesses of his victims before he struck, his motions were more like a marionette than human. HE WAS THE SHAPE OF EVIL, not some heavy metal video character like Zombie made him into. As for The Blob, I would rather some other director do it. Zombie will ruin it. I stand in my belief ALWAYS!!! the 1970's and 1980's will always be the best time in horror since the days of Anthony Perkins in Psycho and Bela Logosi in Dracula, or like the most beautifully done vampire flick ever-THE ORIGINAL SALEM'S LOT! You people in today's generation have no idea what a good horror movie is, or good music at that matter. Please bring back the old cameras and lighting. Please bring back the imagination and only the clothes on your back to make great film. I'm tired of the CGI and I'm tired of these young punks destroying the art of subliminal fright that made movies like The Blob and Halloween so fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHY NOT HAVE A GELATINOUS ALIEN ACID GOO EATING PEOPLE?! THAT'S WHY IT'S CALLED THE BLOB YOU STUPID NEANDERTHAL LONG HAIRED IDIOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHAT HOLLYWOOD DOES WHEN IT GETS IT'S GRIMY HANDS ON CULT CLASSICS LIKE THE BROOD OR VIDEODROME! I KNOW THERE IS SOMEONE READING THIS THAT AGREES!!!!!!! YOU CAN'T TELL ME THERE'S NOT!!!!!!!

It'll be a pile of crap like most his other films. The only one barely watchable is Devil's Rejects.

1988 Blob had it right. That movie was disgusting and very frightening at times. There's nothing Zombie can do that will top it. He's derivative at best.

your a fuckin asshole talking all that shit when rob zombie can put a creative vision on a tired old franchise admit he has tallent
