Film School Rejects: Review: Friday the 13th (2009)

  • Chris · 9 months ago
Sweet! Sounds like a blast. Can hardly wait to check it out. Just a few more hours. Nothing like seeing a Friday the 13th movie on Friday the 13th!

How are these films entertaining? I've watched so many of them trying to understand but I just can't. Is it my fault for not enjoying wanton gore?

The first twenty minutes really set a good pace and had some inventive kills, but I was not impressed with anything pass that point. TCM remake had me on the edge of my seat nearly the entire film. I felt like I knew everything that would happen in this movie from watching the trailer - the tension was absent for me. It seems I'm in the minority though.

You're definitely not in the minority Kyle. I whole-heartedly agree that the first 15-20 minutes was amazing and pretty much raised the bar that the rest of the film couldn't hold a candle to. What does it say about a movie when the first 20 minutes are, in essence, a summation of, and better than, the next 80? This remake was something no horror film should be: boring.

A lot of people are praising the first 20 minutes, though I fail to see what makes them any more original than what follows. Most of the stuff that happens in the first 20 is lifted or inspired by the first 3 films, so I would say it might even be the least original part, based purely on whats happening. The structure is original, I guess.

I think the people that don't like this Friday the 13th probably don't really like the ones that came before it.

I agree you really have to be a fan of the originals to really understand the absurdity of everything...the cliche characters, nudity and "don't go out there" moments...it's a fun ride plain and simple

Having just come back from seeing it (in a town called Crystal Lake none the less), I gotta say... underwhelmed here. While it was a passable slasher film, it wasn't a Friday the 13th. I realize this is made for a younger generation, but where was the fun? Where were the inventive kills? I mean, if you're gonna remake/reboot/re-whatever catch phrase you like a movie, at least understand what made the original film have such longevity in the first place, and just ramp that up.

But the main problem I had with this... I felt no sympathy for Jason. In the originals, you understand that Jason's just this big retard with a mommy complex who kills for her. In this one, he just became another masked psycho who just killed teens who "came into his woods" (which is odd, seeing how he seemed to kill people who didn't even come near the camp). This one missed out on all the fun of the series. This should've been more long the lines of My Bloody Valentine 3-D. At least that was a blast and a half to watch. This one? Not much to be had. Even the first 20 minutes were nothing special (c'mon... really roast that chick in the sleeping bag! Don't just toast her).

I know what many expect from a F-13th film, and even though they're not anywhere near high art, they're at least entertaining. This one missed all the marks.

Yeah, I have to say this film is passable, but nothing special. There was really nothing original at all about this film. It seems that opening massacres before the title sequences are the new thing in horror. Added, I didn't see a single scare through out (The part with the car was good). There are just more of the same old tricks that have been used time and time again in horror films. There was also some major huh? Moments such as Jason killing residents of Crystal Lake (why now?), and how Trent's family has been going to there cabin for years, yet Jason now has a problem with that. However, I must say that this film has its moments. The acting is not what I have come to expect from past Friday films (it's actually pretty good!). Stands outs for me were indeed Travis Van Winkle (playing the perfect jock) and Aaron Yoo gave me a couple laughs. For me, Danielle Panabaker was far more of a sympathetic character than Amanda Righetti, so the ending didn't sit that well. Derek Mears is the star. He made Jason all his own and did an amazing job. Wouldn't mind seeing him behind the mask again. But overall, this film was entertaining. The gore level was pretty good, and a few cool kills to boot. But this film would truly grade higher in my book if it had more scares (mainly, I think this has to do with the over editing that occurred every time Jason was chasing someone). Out of 10 I would probably give this one a 6.

the sleeping bag scene was the main scene that I was talking about along with the bear trap...it's just how realistic the practical effects are nowadays...when Chewie got the screw driver in the neck it was kind of brutal how Jason lingered it...though it was tainted when I noticed some CGI blood and effects...other than that they did an excellent job....I've seen all the movies so I know it's nothing new but still making it more horrific than laughable is what this one sets apart most of the sequels....I can't wait to see what they can do with Freddy...

This film is clearly dividing people. You either think it was one of the best F13 films there is or you think its old and tired. I think that some people clicked with the writers and others didn't. Nothing against anyone who didn't, but remember - this is a reboot. Not another sequel. This is the "greatest hits" of Jason. Are there some original kills? Yes. Can I tell you which kills were directly inspired by some of Jason's greatest? Of course. The stuff with the arrow and the sleeping bag especially are definitely call outs to the other movies.

If you go into this expecting a reboot that mixes up all the elements from the first four, you'll get that. If you go in expecting the 11th sequel, you're not going to find what you're looking for.

  • Willerino · 9 months ago
Your a dumbass, Jason X is god awful
  • _Christopher_M · 9 months ago
just got back it was the best incarnation of Friday The 13th.....it had a lot of the classic elements and it pushed the gore factor...I hope Marcus Nispel returns and we see more of this new Jason
  • Jim_Rohner · 9 months ago
Pushed the gore factor? Did we see a different movie? Aside from the girl being hung upside down in her sleeping bag and set on fire, I didn't see anything inventive or anything I haven't seen before

I couldn't disagree more, this was an abortion of the original films. Even the worst Friday the 13th of the series was better than this. At least Jason X had the decency to be tongue in cheek, this film takes itself too seriously, and is seriously lacking gore. Michael Bay needs to fall on something sharp. Preferably face first. Otherwise he may ruin another beloved 80's horror franchise.

Grade-A, for this movie??? what drug were you on while watching this?
  • Willerino · 9 months ago
The new Friday the 13th is by no means a classic horror film. Having said that, it is possibly the most fun i have ever had watching a movie. The kills were graphic and grusome, the comedy was unending and ironic, and the girls... well you catch my drfit. Jason actually emerges as a character all his own for a change in this one. He is a maniacal killer who just wants people to leave him alone. I was incredibly happy that he wasn't super strong in this one, hopefully we r done with that bullshit. In most of the others, he like Superman in a hockey mask. This film felt real, was scarry, and was an awesome film all around.

this movie does not make any sense,...this movie made jason look weak.....if they made the film real why doesnt jason ever get tired of running....all the other dudes in this film are fit and look like runners...oh the ending was horrible.....being stabbed in the leg hurts but breaking through 2x4 with your head doesnt? you have to be kidding me...
  • RobertFure · 9 months ago
Friday the 13th Parts V and VIII would like to have a word with you. And Michael Bay is more of an Executive Producer on these, your hate should be aimed at Fuller and Form, who do the leg work. But personally I like most of their remakes.
  • MackB · 9 months ago
This flick simply rocked. If you love the three b's of the originals (and don't mind the filck being cleaned up and looking all slick) then you should dig it. If you don't like the original series, don't see this one.

This is Mr. Digital reporting from Hollywood California

I thought t the movie was off the chain, they did a good of bringing him back, if u remember how they tricked off the series by taking him to Manhattan,to hell and to space, because of unrealistic directors!

This movie was scary entertaining point blank!

I seen it twice on valentine's day, once at night and once in the day "The Grumen Chinese Experience" was the best!

I think Jason is the best film killer ever created, and they did him justice!
Remember Jason was not just a kid that went on a killing spree, in time it's obvious he got taken over by superior evil forces and that's what I think made him so lethal and great!

It's work watching the movie on the big screen if you are looking for a good scare!

"This movie was not at all a remake!, but a rebirth! and needs to be respected as a rebirth...

from a scale of 1 to 10 "ten being best"
    I give it a 10!

A disaster of a movie that paid no respect to the original series. Hated almost every minute of it.
  • RobertFure · 9 months ago
If you think it paid no respect to the original films I'll bet you've not seen them the whole way through in years, if ever. I could rattle off 10 things that are nods to or right out of the originals. Weak sauce.
