Boiling Point: Twilight
Btw, has any movie been given a rating higher than an A-?
I think it says so much about Raimi's skill that I enjoyed the hell out of the film, found it fun and funny and horrifying and that final scene still hit me on an emotional level. When she fell down and you KNEW it was coming my heart broke a little, when she's yelling for help it shattered and when it cuts to Long's face it completely blew it into a billion pieces. Any film that can be that much sheer fun and still have me invest in the characters can be considered a job well done. My new second favorite film of the year (after ADVENTURELAND) and Lohman's is my new second favorite performance of the year (after Kristen Stewart in ADVENTURELAND).
Also, looking at Lohman, Stewart and Rashinda Jones (in I LOVE YOU, MAN), it isn't weird that people are complaining of a lack of focus on great female performances. Because nobody is looking at those films for brilliant actresses, but that's where they are.
There is zero "horror" in the movie. It's funny, it's gross, and it's loud, but there is not a single scare in the film that isn't manufactured via loud audio cues of gotcha-style editing. They're artificial and forced, not atmospheric and earned. The acting is bad across the board. The demon who (per the curse and per the intro scenes) supposedly takes three days before it can manifest itself physically is already tossing her around the room on day one. The ending switcheroo is telegraphed an hour beforehand.
So I repeat... it's funny, it's gross, and it's loud. Claiming anything more than that is simply your desire to be liked by the "cool kids" in town.
Not scares my ass.
I like the fresh angle on horror movies that this movie presents. It's comedic and horrifying.
However when will we find truly good psychological horror that does not rely on gross outs?
