Film School Rejects: Replacing Terrence Howard with Don Cheadle in Iron Man 2, And Why It Would Be a Big Mistake

  • Davebaxter1989 · 1 year ago
Got to say I don't really mind all that much. Long as Downey Juniors in I'm in with bells on.
  • jacob · 1 year ago
I agree it would completely change the tone of the character and be a little jarring.
  • Smurf · 1 year ago
I wouldn't like it, but to be fair it might not be Marvel's fault. I'm not sure what Howard got for the first one but I'm sure it was fair considering how excited he was about the movie.
  • Greiger · 1 year ago
Bad call. When they announced Howard as Rhoady I made no disagreement because I
thought in every way possible that Howard was perfect and born to play that part. I like
Cheadle, but it would change the tone of the character and the relationship.
  • Rob Hunter · 1 year ago
If true, I say eh, no big deal. Howard was far from a "key piece" of Iron Man's success. He was liked, but he was incidental. I do find it hard to believe that Marvel got Cheadle for a lower price than Howard wanted though.

And the Katie Holmes bashing has got to stop.
  • Chris · 1 year ago
I'd like Howard to continue playing Rhodes, but wouldn't go all crazy if Cheadle ended up in the part. While I enjoyed Howard's portrayal of the character in the first film, he didn't "wow" me. Now, maybe that's due to him not really doing much other than showing up to talk every so often. But he didn't really pop on screen, and truthfully? He didn't really seem to hold his own with Downey Jr.'s personality (two different personalities, but still. Why would these two hang out if one loves fun, and the other's a collassal bore?). Cheadle may be able to do that... especially if he gets more screen time with something to do, like put on the War Machine suit.

I'm so sick of these actors signing three-movie contracts with the studios before the first one is made, only to renegotiate when they're a success. What the fuck is the point of having them sign those contracts in the first place if they don't plan on honoring them?
  • jack2jack · 1 year ago
Now I' sorry to disappoint you gentlemen but the Stark- Rhodes character relationship has a deep history. That was evident with the rescue of Stark. The Hum-Drum-Vee comment is classic of two poeople who have an established history. (A bond made during the filming) The ending aluding to next time baby! I can't see Cheadle in this roll, pay the man for God's sake. I grew up with Terrance in Cleveland, it's nice to see some hometown flavor doin his thang on the big screen. Note that I don't like Cheadle, he's a very accomplished actor.

I don't understsnd why Marvel is all of a sudden acting like a MGM or Warner Bros. They need to stay true to their core if they want to continue to try and out compete the other studios. I gave them kudos for getting it right. They are acting like a man going through a mid-life crisses. Dump the one who got you there in favor of ARM CANDY.
  • Reg · 1 year ago
Please hire another actor. I'm not pleased w/ Cheadle as Rhodes. I thought I just had a heart attack after I read the whole thing. WHY MARVEL? WHY?
  • D Train · 1 year ago
Possibility Number 3: This story was planted, intending to scare Howard out of negotiations.

Note a recent episode of Entourage: Director Carl Ertz begins courting Vince, only to drive down Emile Hirsch's price for the same movie.

If this is the case, I will give Marvel a fair warning: Do not &*@# with Cheadle. He is a badass, and will kill five Marvel Execs before you even know he's coming.
  • goldwriting · 1 year ago
Replacing a good actor with a great actor is never a bad move. I'm a little curious about Cheadle in the role of the future War Machine, but just as Gosling is being talked about for Green Lantern, Don Cheadle can pull off whatever is thrown his way. He hasn't disappointed yet.
  • Nish · 1 year ago
I think that Rhodes character hasn't developed enough in the film for Terrance Howard to say its his role, I can easily see Cheadle getting the role and doing more with it, especially when Rhodes becomes War Machine and goes crazy. However, purely for the sake of continuity, I would like to see Howard as Rhodes.

"We can only hope that they wise up and do the same with Terrence Howard. Otherwise this could go down as their first major mistake as a studio."

They've already made their first major mistake as a studio: hiring Zak Penn to write The Incredible Hulk and Louis Leterrier to direct it. Because when I think of the guys I want making a Hulk movie, I think of the guy who wrote Inspector Gadget and Elektra and the guy who directed Transporter 2. What a complete nothing of a movie The Incredible Hulk was. A mildly entertaining b-movie forgotten the moment you leave the theatre. Getting the right people for Iron Man was a fluke. Marvel is doomed if they keep up their behavior of hiring the wrong people and not even trying to get the right people to return for sequels.
  • Robert Fure · 1 year ago
I just think its funny they're replacing a guy who didn't really look like Jim Rhodes with someone who looks even less like Jim Rhodes. Oh well.

As for Marvel, I say good for them - don't let actors push you around. Marvel is doing very well as its own business with its own name, own people, etc. They shouldn't let themselves get pushed around on price and if they prove they won't stand for this kind of stuff, that's a good stance. They're a new studio that needs to put its foot down early.
  • Meepo · 1 year ago
This is bullsh*t. Terrence is a great actor, and he did great in the few appearances he had as Rhodes. He also looked so excited to come back to the next 2 films, so what the hell? He's already Rhodes to me. He and Downey have perfect chemistry together and I can see them as good friends. When I see them together I just think "Rhodes and Stark." Not Howard and Downey.

Marvel is really going to f*ck up if they do this. It's going to start bad rumors about the movie before it even hits theaters.
  • Meepo · 1 year ago
Also quite frankly Terrence is a lot nicer to look at than Don Cheadle is. He's ugly. He might be a better actor, but I can't stand looking at him.

And about the Katie and Maggie thing. They both sucked, period. Both were a mistake, I'm so glad they finally killed that character off.
  • Cole Abaius · 1 year ago
I actually heard that Robert Downey Jr is considering playing Tony Stark and putting on black-face to play Rhodes ala Howard when Terrence is forced off the project.

Is it a smart move? No. It's brilliant.
  • THA 1 · 1 year ago
I think that Don Cheadle is a great actor; but Terrance is the man for it he has the look for the part. but if he does not take the spot. Morris Chestnut will be a nice choice for war machine.
  • ife hearted · 1 year ago
I think that if theyre gonna change Rhodey, they might as well get Will Smith.
  • Cable2300 · 1 year ago
Howard just wants to do his music. I guess he needs to go talk to Vin Diseal.
  • Meepo · 1 year ago
Oh my god the Robert comment going black-face for the part...Will Smith...you guys crack me up XD
  • AZE3M · 1 year ago
Choosing actors for Comic Books roles is extremely trickly. Iron Man 1 nailed it, but if ol' Terrence is leaving, it could mess it all up.

Wrong casting spoils movies. George Clooney as Bruce Wayne? Anyone else thought that was a bad idea?

But as long as Robert Jr. doesn't leave, I guess Iron Man 2 should be awesome
    =D
  • Atomic_Raj · 1 year ago
I have to say that I think Terence done a fine job and looked forward to seeing him in more action. I hope that it's not too late and Marvel see sense and that they can sort something out, and hopefully Terence will be back as War Machine and Don Cheadle gets a part as maybe a Rich Evil Nemesis for Tony Stark. A right evil billionaire, hell bent on wreaking havock and being a major pain in Tony’s back-side.
  • TL · 1 year ago
D Train, i was thinking the same thing. Marvel could be bluffing.

"Sorry we couldn't work things out Terrence, but don't you worry about us, we've got Don Cheadle all set to go."
  • k(Black) · 1 year ago
As a man of color I'm glad to see that there's so much interest in this. I would like to add that I love both actors but Don Cheadle is a smaller guy. Wonderful actor but much smaller that Howard.

Now that we've seen Howard in that role it'll be hard to see someone of lesser physical stature play War-Machine.
  • Troy · 1 year ago
I have a complete lack of care face.
  • Gavgoyle · 1 year ago
First off, I think Don Cheadle is one of the best actors in Hollywood today. He has crazy charisma and tremedous depth. There are few roles that he couldn't do. However, I don't think that means he should do Rhodey.

Although he doesn't look just like Rhodes, I think Howard did a great job in the role. He had the right bearing for a military guy dealing with a pampered contractor. He made it so that I see him in my minds eye now.

I have every faith that Cheadle put on the military dress uniform and play a soldier and put on a suit of armor and play a superhero. He's a little small, but I think he could make a great T'challa. I just think that Howard has staked out the territory for Rhodey and should keep on livin' there.
  • d0x · 1 year ago
Cheadle is a great actor but acting chops aside I dont think he has the look for the movie. Howard looked like he might be able to kick a little ass and when I look at Cheadle I see..something with less asskickery.

Who knows if this one is true or not. Hell maybe Marvel was considering it and they floated a rumor to see how the internet reacted to it. I think these days people have a bigger impact of decisions in Hollywood than they have in the past. The net has allowed instant polling of a huge number of people in their target audience which is very valuable when you are bankrolling something this expensive.
  • undeadsac · 1 year ago
Am I the only one to think that Maggie was so horrendously ugly to the point of ridiculousness that there would be no chance that someone as wealthy and prominant as either Harvey or Bruce would ever fawn over her.

Katie Holmes is a nitwit, that much is obvious from the choices she's made in her private life and she's never been a good actress, so the need to change the character for the DK makes sense, they just should have chosen someone who could act as well as physically make sense.

Cheadle is NOT Rhody i refuse to accept this change, so much so that it may make me go into the movie expecting the worst whereas before now I was extremely excited about IM2
  • Meepo · 1 year ago
Undeadsac, I completely agree with you. I actually left a comment here saying I hated Maggie. Her voice and acting were horrible.
  • cantsaywho · 1 year ago
    HI,

i know for a fact that it wasn't about money. Howard was happy to be part of the film and Marvel "apparently" just replaced him without even letting HIM KNOW! Marvel is messed up....and this move is messed up!
  • yessum15 · 1 year ago
    1) Just hearing about the possibility of casting Don Cheadle was incredibly insulting. I mean damn, it's like one black guy is as interchangeable as another. Seriously, these two actors are so entirely different from each other you'd have to be a really racist SOB to think you could just substitute one for the other. Ridiculous. For a minute there I was proudly looking forward to the silverscreen debut of such a racially progressive and downright gritty superhero origin.

    2) Howard was an important part of the first movie's success. I truly believe the only reason the movie got the acclaim it did was the chemistry on set. The story was generic, and it all degenerated into a typical big robot fight. But the ride was so fun because it felt like everyone on set was really enjoying embracing these characters. Robert Downey Jr. was clearly the keystone that held the entire cast together, but Howard & Paltrow really did their thing. I just don't see how Hotel Rwanda's gonna fit in there.

    3) WHY ARE SO MANY ASSUMING MARVEL IS TELLING THE TRUTH? Terrence Howard's comments (see wikipedia page of movie) suggest that they actually broke their end of the contract. Worse still they broke it without much communication. He sounded genuinely upset about being left out of the next production.
  • Davebaxter1989 · 1 year ago
    1) Don't make it a racial issue. The character's black so any actor that takes that role will be black. It wasn't a racial issue that Gylenhaal took over from Holmes - I mean they don't look alike at all.
  • Jason · 1 year ago
Funny that last post "don't make it a racial issue" when in "21" most of the real-life "characters" were Asian males but were replaced in the movie with Caucasians. "Any actor that takes that role..." Indeed. But I digress. Back to the topic at hand. I think Marvel's bluffing. Since there's a lot of talk and expectation that the 2nd will be about War Machine, Marvel might be trying to get us to believe that it won't be about War Machine. When, in the end, it actually will be. Just to throw us off the scent. However, if it's true they're replacing Howard, well, that's not cool. I hate it when they replace someone who has become the face of that character. It is jarring and does mess with continuity. You might not feel it right away, but when you start watching, something just doesn't feel right. Even if the new actor does a good job. Like Dumbledore in Potter. Unfortunately, that actor had died but still...it was sad as well as jarring and inconsistent all at the same time.

I heard that the other reasons that were in play. Like a problem with his family or something. Weird.
  • angel · 1 year ago
yeah apparently he got payed more than robert downey jr. for iron man because he was one of the first big actor to be casted and signed a contract so there was no chaging it. apparently they wanted to give him substantionally less money for the second one and he refused so they replaced him
  • Scorpio · 1 year ago
I believe it is a stupid idea replacing terrence howard if he wants more money give it him Iron man earnt more than the entire spider-man series and beat the hulk film!

I also believe changing the charecter will change the mood of the film Terrence howard played James rhode very good in the first film he was a funny actor and kept the storyline happy otherwise i would have left the cinema after the first scene!

    Iron man 2 spoiler:

If Terrence wants more because of his characters plot line then it is most likely he will have to save tony and probably will be killed off in the next film!
  • Davebaxter1989 · 1 year ago
How has Iron Man earnt more than the Spiderman series? I'm fairly sure thats a whole bunch of wrong. And its not a spoiler if you made it up.
  • Blade16707 · 10 months ago
Damn...I had no Idea that Marvel was that shady.Cheadle looks like Flavor Flav for God's sake.Usually superheroes are supposed to be handsome(no homo)and heroic looking. They can't be seriouse. But what can you do?They'll find out the HARD way at the boxoffice...trust me.

Though I do appreciate Don Cheadle's acting talent, I have to admit that Terrence Howard would be a better fit for the role. I hope that wisdom wins out over egos. When I think of the replacement for the role of the wife (Evy) in the 3rd Mummy movies, she was a very poor choice and it had a real impact on the flow of the movie. I would advise the studio not to be "penny wise, but pound foolish."

  • 0caretaker0 · 1 month ago
i think putting Don Cheadle as the new James Rhodes is more of a bad idea don't get me wrong Cheadle is a good actor, but Terrence Howard played it better with being the friend who would go the distances to find and help his friend. Cheadle would look like it's all about wearing the armor
