Film School Rejects: Oscar Noms Stay Predictable, Snub The Dark Knight, Gran Torino

  • CaptainReg0981 · 10 months ago
I'm happy that Ben Button is nominated but bummed that Dark Knight is not in Best Picture nomination (oh well). I'm also happy Robert Downey is nominated for Tropic Thunder. Good job Rob!! Oh and good luck to Mickey Rouke.

Yeah...won't be watching this year. I'll watch The Dark Knight on Blu-Ray that night instead. I can see, maybe, possibly, in a small universe, not getting a nod for Best Picture, but no nomination for Best Directing? That's fucking criminal.

Still can't believe "The Reader" was nominated for BP over "The Dark Knight". F*cking Holocaust stories.
  • Jeremy_M · 10 months ago
'Man on Wire' will win "Best documentary feature"... but other then that, I don't care.

Very Wrestler lite. Not even a best song nomination. I thought it was really good. What really annoys me is that the Best Picture nominations are almost exactly the same as the Best Adapted Screenplay nominations. Thats gay (which I suppose is also quite funny as Milk is the only original one).

The fact that both the common man and a holier than thou organization like the Academy could have agreed on what is a cinematic masterpiece but didn't, proves once again, why the Oscars are irrelevant. Hollywood can have their little party that night and give a bunch of awards to some obscure movie, or a tired rehash (Ben Button) while I watch what is the true best picture of the year, The Dark Knight
  • Nevernude · 10 months ago
Once again the old toffs at the Academy have gone against public opinion. Time for a change guys!
Anyway, i wont be watching. I plan on eating some homemade guacamole instead.

Very disappointing & depressing that The Dark Knight did not get nominated for Best Picture, Director & Musical Score. At least it got those 8 other nominations. Will definitely NOT be watching the Oscars this year in PROTEST!! :-(

No matter what the Academy says, the real BEST PIC of 2008 is THE DARK KNIGHT.

its their egos they are trying to protect. if they nominate TDK for best picture they might stoop down in intellect or whatever bullshit just cuz the "masses" like the same thing. They really do like more boring period type movies. sorry benjamin button i liked you but i couldnt stand to watch you maybe more than twice. *yawn, another ho hum year. wont be watching as always.
  • Josh_Radde · 10 months ago
You're right. Titanic, Return of the King and Forrest Gump weren't appreciated by the masses. The Departed and No Country for Old Men WERE boring period pics--how did I miss that?

I don't like the fact that a lot of the films nominated are films that had limited release. The average film goer will not have seen them, not that that really matters because we all know that the Academy Awards is a ceremony where filmmakers can fellate one another. I'll still watch the ceremony because I will have nothing better to do that night.
  • Rob_Hunter · 10 months ago
A lot of these films see a limited release precisely because the average filmgoer WOULDN'T go see them. Do you honestly think 'The Wrestler' would see the same kind of weekend box-office as 'Beverly Hills Chihuahua' had?
  • Jeff · 10 months ago
Of course not. But it IS safe to assume that if The Wrestler was given a wide release, it WOULD have made more money than it had with it's limited run. More theaters, access to more people. Simple logic.

Just to give some perspective, the Academy isn't eight old dudes sitting around smoking corn-cob pipes. It's a large body of voters from many different areas in filmmaking.

Still, how we're able to predict the choices of such a large decision-making body is fairly astounding.
  • Rob_Hunter · 10 months ago
Oscar predictions have been pretty accurate for years now. This is nothing new. And to be fair, there were more than a few nominations that went against predictions this year. Again, nothing new.

And did you reference a 'corn-cob pipe' because the commenter above you said "fellate" or did you just pull it out of your ass? (The reference, not the pipe.)

I like the nominations. Winslet or Dicaprio (or anyone but Shannon) don't deserve recognition for Revolutionary Road, Benjamin Button will be this year's Gangs of New York and walk away with maybe one or two statues. Wall-E should win Best Screenplay. I'm happy for Richard Jenkins in The Visitor.
  • Rob_Hunter · 10 months ago
'Wall-E' over 'In Bruges' for best original screenplay? You sir, are nuts.
  • TL_is_now_TJL · 10 months ago
I'm surprised Clint and Gran Troino got snubbed, considering the great reviews the film is pulling in. Not really shocked TDK didn't get a best pic nod; The Academy probably figures since the movie made a jillion bucks, why do they need an Oscar?
At least Brangelina will be in the front row for the ceremony. I'm sure they'll have two or three cameras trained on them all night.

"Madagascar 2" isn't nominated for Best Animated Film? That's it. I've lost all faith in the Academy Awards.
  • Jeff · 10 months ago
The above should say "probably would".
  • ¿whysoserious? · 10 months ago
Who do u think will win the oscar for best actor and who should win?????

    I think:

    Will win: Mickey Rourke
    Should win: Sean Penn
  • Darren · 10 months ago
Wall-E Will win Orig. Screenplay, you can take that to the bank. Screenplay is not just plain ol' words.
  • Omek · 10 months ago
I guess I'm not shocked that TDK was snubbed for pest picture. Whatever... I say we all boycott this year and go watch TDK that night. LOL We all know Heath is going to win anyways, so that was really all I wanted to watch. Although, I must give props to In Bruges. That movie was very entertaining and extremely overlooked IMHO. I guess I'm just a big fan of dialogue.

And what about Let the Right One In?!?! I mean WTF?

It would be good for the Oscars to get the lowest ratings ever. Maybe that will help smack some sense into them.
  • Scott · 10 months ago
    Hey Oscar Voters?

You can have your Sean Penn and Milk. Give me a Clint Eastwood and a Gran Tarino any day of the week.
  • julius · 9 months ago
i would STILL be watching it but won't really care
