Film School Rejects: Orci and Kurtzman Respond to Claims of Racism in ‘Transformers 2′

  • Jay · 5 months ago
Yeah - mudflap & skids were prettymuch this franchise's Jar-Jar Binks for me... I was chuffed when it seemed that Devastator ate one of them... But alas, he survived.

And you know damn well that Bay thought they'd "connect with the kids in the audience"...

Meh the Screenwriters should have known they would be none too happy, come on it was Michael Bay at the controls what else did they expect? Essentially everyone know that means he tosses any creative writing to the way side and just blows some stuff. Pretty sure I read someplace that Michael Bay’s plans for part III revolve around simply putting Megan Fox up front the whole time in different states of undress in different provocative poses and having huge explosions going on behind her. (Get your mind out of the gutter you know what I mean).

But to touch on the actual subject a bit, I think maybe like a lot of things it might be blown a bit out of proportion just a bit. I say that basically because I’m sure Mr. Bay did not do it to insult or hurt anyone. He is not so much racist as just stupid and that is not his fault. Never the less if someone feels as though they are hurt by it they are entitled to feel that way. As stated fairly level-headed response by the screenwriters and it is hard to disagree with them.

I would eagerly pay double admission to see that megan fix movie in imax

And I find it weird people were offended by the twins. They were really annoying and it's pretty obvious that no one acts like that. The twins were really just dumb and annoying characters that were completely unnessacery.

(p.s. Sorry for any spelling errors. I just got back from seeing the movie and feel much less intelligent than before it started. Hopefully this will wear off)
  • Mack41 · 5 months ago
Crap. I meant megan fox. I'm typing this on my iPod and I must have messed up
  • DP · 4 months ago
Some of the stereotypes about black people are that they are annoying and dumb, which is why alot of people were offended by the characters. I know that no one is really like that, but its that fact that some people believe these stereotypes that gets me. Michael Bay is wrong for making them like that.
  • Imdopetastic · 4 months ago
I also belive its some what of ingnorance but also consider the only robot to die in the first film was also protrade black. Which goes back to saying that they always kill off the black ppl in movies and I'm starting to see a history coming to questions.
  • Ryan · 5 months ago
But they did write them....and yeah it sounds like Bay changed a thing or two....They didn't know what to expect while they were writing them? I don't really know how to put it. I guess what I'm trying to say is how come they didn't understand those characters until they saw the film?

I don't know the whole story, but it just sounds like they are saying this to appear as the shocked good guys and take the side of the public.....
  • yintagh · 4 months ago
Yeah Orci Kurtzman and now Kruger couldn't write their way out of tinkle-soaked bag.
And now those douchebags are trying to play innocents to this horrid bodge of a movie?
Don't get me started on the way they screwed up Star Trek.
    Slaggin' no-talent hacks!
  • Rukkai · 4 months ago
Star Trek could have been way, way, waaaay worse. I was pleasantly surprised at the direction they took with it, actually. It was different, and it gave us more to look for than what the series gave us.

But I do agree that if you are a writer, and you write those kinds of characters, you obviously know what you're putting into it. Changing one thing, like the gold tooth on Bay's part, does not necessarily change a whole character. Gold tooth or not, those robots were godawful and just bad for the movie in general, IMO.
  • Davebaxter1989 · 5 months ago
It's a tough call because there really should have been someone along the production line that thought 'hmmmmmmmm.....not to sure about those two' so there's no way this is one persons doing its a catalog of mini screw ups.
  • Neil Miller · 5 months ago
I'm still under the impression -- having seen the film twice -- that Skids and Mudflap are two misguided white suburban youths. I mean, did you see the cars they turn into... It may be that I'm from the 'burbs of Cleveland, but I've only ever seen pasty-skinned wannabe OG's driving rides like that.

I think that Eminem's minion's should be most offended by this.
  • RobertFure · 5 months ago
Totally agree. When I walked out I said the same thing to my friend. Also, appearance wise, I think they look more like Gremlins than chimpanzees or whatever.
  • steve · 5 months ago
define racism, these 2 in the movies dont have everything that defines racism
  • Octoberist · 5 months ago
It's not that they're racist, but they're absoultely useless.

I've said it before: They should have had Ironhide and Rachet, (two characters we already know) in their place during the Egypt scenes. Other than that, they didn't do a whole lot until the last act. Besides making stupid one liners.
  • Eric Melin · 5 months ago
Yeah, but did they write the line about "not readin' much"?
  • RobertFure · 5 months ago
These 2 Transformers are supposed to be bratty young guys. It's not Optimus Prime here, they're not brainiacs. They just don't like to read. Tons of people don't like to read books. The Twins were not illiterate. They couldn't read the Language of the Primes. I can't read Latin, but that doesn't make me illiterate. They didn't recognize it. If you showed me Farsi or Hindi and asked me to say which was which, I wouldn't know. A few anti-Bay critics are putting the most fuel on this 'racism' fire, the same kinds of critics who love other movies that are way worse commentaries on the world.
  • Nick DeNife · 5 months ago
Look, if they were tapdancing or playing basketball, okay, but geez... People are so stupidly sensitive these days to every single little thing. Like there are no white people with gold teeth? I agree with Mr. Miller - how do we know they're not whiggers?
  • Seann Anderson · 5 months ago
It blows my mind that Bay thinks that these two characters are ok for the "little" fans. I think that the racism button is pressed a little much these days. I've seen alot of white kids act the same way as these two bots do.

I didn't see Hillbillies raising total hell about Mater in Cars?
  • RobertFure · 5 months ago
I bet most kids thought they were hilarious. The objectionable part should be their language - they're foul for kids. I'd agree racism is pushed too much, especially here. Ask anyone under say, 16 what 'color' those robots were and they'll say Green and Orange.
  • Seann Anderson · 5 months ago
You hit the nail on the head Robert. I should have been more specific about what I meant. I have a 3 year old son and he has been magnetized to these two ever since I showed them to him. Of course, he won't hear them speak for some time, I am just disappointed in the direction Bay went with them. He really could have had a winner on his hands with these two.
  • Jordan Rockswell · 5 months ago
Why is everyone acting so suprised that Michael Bay or the writers would do anything different in this movie? Dont you remember Jazz in the 1st one? Same exact thing, they think their going to relate to kids or appeal to a demographic but all they end up doing is making themselves look like a$$h0l3$. It's not racism, it's just stupidity at it's finest.
  • nicky_cavella · 5 months ago
i dont see how its racist, these 2 are pure comic relief, and why did they have to use the BLACK thing in the first place. just cause one of them has gold teeth and talk in slang they end up sayin its representing a black person. i think the ones that are sayin its racist are the racist themselves...homie
  • Kava · 5 months ago
If comedians taught us anything it's that stereotypes are now a staple of society, you can watch the Chappelle show and see that...but I do have a problem with the names of the robots Skids and Mudflaps, that's getting a little to blatant, and the gold tooth, if that was Bay's idea, bad call but oh well..movie was still cool cause Meghan Fox is hot
  • Aleric · 5 months ago
Another example of how Micheal Bay has no clue what the general public or even his audiance want in a movie.
  • sankofa · 5 months ago
Figures that the one set of characters Michael Bay chooses to imbue with any personality ends up biting him in the ass with a gold tooth.
  • Steen · 5 months ago
Labeling these characters as 'racially' offensive is to ignore the seedier aspects of rap culture. That is unless anyone currently offended was also miffed by Master P, Juvenile, or anyother persona celebrating ignorance and violence.
  • mimi · 4 months ago
Actually, I'm very offended by Master P., Juvenile, et al. Everyone should be offended by that foolishness, Black or not.
  • Winona · 5 months ago
So having a gold tooth makes you a black person. Right. Great logic.
  • Stefan Short · 4 months ago
This whole thing is bothering me. I mean seriously people. People now a days are just looking for something to be offended by. I saw the movie. I thought the whole movie was awesome. I thought mudflaps and skids were a valuable addition to the movie adding comic relief. I wanna know who the first person to come up with this complaint is. I guarantee someone from the NAACP or something like that. I mean come on people, at least 80 percent of people from every race live up to their stereotypes. I wonder how many people will attempt to sue the film studio. People need to grow up and realize there is more to life then allowing something as small and pitiful as a stereotype to offend you.
  • mimi · 4 months ago
As a Black woman, I have to disagree with the 'racism' idea here. Honestly, if you learned everything you needed to know about language and personalities from the internet, and you chose Black people, face it, you'd sound like a damn idiot, too. Have you seen BET.com? BlackPlanet.com? Any of the websites we supposedly frequent?

We played ourselves. If we don't want to be portrayed this way, perhaps we should stop behaving this way.

And don't forget, Tyrese was in the films, too, and conducted himself with intelligence and decorum.
  • Day-Dae · 4 months ago
The first Transformers would have been perfect for me if it was not for the car salesman calling his mother a mammy and bit@#$. Then later on the hacker yelled at his grandmother over and over again. There was no reason for that characterization. Script wise or whatever. I kept wondering what was that about. That was my fault for ignoring it.

So to see what Michael did in the movie really stopped me short. I couldn't really enjoy the movie after that. I'm not interested in turning off my mind to completely be entertained. I don't care if he has a real life friend like this, doesn't mean I want to pay my money to see it. Everybody doesn't want to grow into a Pimp Mike. The twin did not make the movie. If they were removed nothing would be missed.

In the Entertainment Weekly article with Megan Fox speaking about this movie she was defensive. She warned this was not a smart person movie. Star Trek, brought intelligence back as true sexiness. I will see that sequel. I can't say that about the next Transformers. Seems like I can wait for it to be on cable. This movie was not a turn on. Eye Candy doesn't mean anything if you don't have the mood.

K & O can say/write what they like. But they also had a little stereotype problem in THE PROPOSAL. As if decimation of a culture was not enough, K&O have Betty Davis whooping it up Native American-style by way of out-of-touch writers in full headdress around a boom box. Yes, there is plenty to complain about with Michael Bay. PLENTY. But prior to hooking up with K&O he did not have that level of racism in his previous films. K&O should perhaps take some responsibility for their writing. But once again they will probably just blame the director.
  • Jack · 3 months ago
Kurtzman and Orci are hacks, but they don't strike me as bigots. I believe them when they dump this controversy on Bay's lap. Of course, they are still responsible for the rest of the script, which sucks pretty royally.
