Film School Rejects: Observe and Report: 10 Things I Hated, 5 I Didn’t

  • Bob · 7 months ago
    FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOU, you tool.
  • ANGRYBROOMSTICK · 7 months ago
shut the F up and go back to your trailer.
  • Chris · 7 months ago
angrybroomstick you're a fucking tool. you jump on every fucking bandwagon - they loved this movie over at /film and i'm sure in the comments you did too.
  • Aleric · 7 months ago
Do you have proof of this?? If not then your remarks are personal and baseless.
  • Janet · 7 months ago
If you "got" it, why do you not state anywhere what it was "about"?
  • ERoBB · 7 months ago
I'm sorry man, I read your many disclaimers about you getting it, but all the things you say you hated were things like "This made me feel funny" or "This character isnt very nice."

I mean, what kind of criticisms are those? You didnt like the unlikable main character, and you hated that? Or you hated the way the movie made you feel? You certainly do sound like a square 85 year old fuddy duddy. You feel sad that they maliciously beat up kids. I honestly dont know how better to criticize the silliness you decided to publish on a website. These words are speaking for yourself.

I havent even seen the movie, and I'm not even sure if I will. So I'm not defending the movie, I want it to be clear I'm criticizing your absurdity. I want to say grow up, and stop being an old man simultaneously. Maybe you got it, you just weren't cool enough to like it. As chilidish as calling you uncool sounds, I'm thinking that it perfectly explains your stance here. You're just uncool.
  • RobertFure · 7 months ago
There were 8 other criticisms over things like tone, acting, and story. Plus, hating the main character as unsympathetic is a pretty legit gripe. So there are 9 legitimate criticisms up there. Not that absurd. And for the record, while my mom doesn't think I'm cool (she agrees with you), my sixth grade teacher thought I was the bee's knees.
  • Richard · 7 months ago
Funny thing is, you tried to make it seem like you did "get it" by making sure to point that out before your "critique"....but you obviously didn't "get it".

Kinda like saying....I am a world scholar and trust me, I know everything I'm talking about even tho you will say I am crazy.......The world is flat.
  • DMuff · 7 months ago
So you're just simply stating and thoroughly explaining your own opinion, nothing wrong with that.

I thought the flick was a good and well done comedy albeit quite a dark one.

Obviously you figured you will be in the minority with your heartfelt opinion, hence the over stating and explaining yet it was probably necessary for the possible criticism you will receive,

Got to keep your ass covered, right?
  • RobertFure · 7 months ago
Pretty much. Check the first 3 comments. Covered the gambit nicely from "You didn't get it" to "You suck for not liking it and probably didn't get it." Good thing no one can see my tears.
  • Screen Rant · 7 months ago
LMAO... "minority opinion?" Did you see how much money this movie made this weekend? $11MM. Next weekend will probably be $4MM or less.

Yeah, Rob's in the minority all right.
  • Nobody Asked Me But · 7 months ago
You didn't "get" this film, did you? (Just yanking your chain, but then you asked for it).

I loved this movie for most of the reasons you hated it, and for the reasons you liked it.. It was hilarious at some points, brutally shocking at others. The tone was bizarre and, dare I say it, original.

It's politically correct to say Ronnie is an asshole, and Seth Rogen is an asshole for playing Ronnie, and to condemn the movie for the "date-rape" scene. But the fact is, that scene is shockingly funny, and nobody knows what happened after Ronnie took Brandi inside the house. To say he "drags her into bed, and rapes her" is to distort and oversimplify the situation.

No question this movie is not a shiny, happy comedy for anybody who stumbles into the multiplex. But if you liked Pulp Fiction, another movie with outrageously funny violence and a bizarre insight into a weird subculture, you might like Observe and Report.

P.S. If you want to know more about the hilarious Yuan twins, check out this interview with them:

And I forgot: Michael Pena is STELLAR in Observe and Report.
  • Matt · 7 months ago
I have to agree with Robert on every single point. It just wasn't funny as a whole. Sure there were funny moments like his comments to Brandy at the end. The movie had absolutely no point whatsoever. The character has to grow at some point and Ronnie learned nothing. He stopped taking his meds and didn't get to be a cop. He probably would have made a good cop had he no been insane. I love Jody Hill, but it feels like they were trying way to hard to push the envelope on this one. The movie is a great example of excess violence, language and absurdity being used to make up for a terrible script.
  • HempKnight 757 · 7 months ago
Damn Fure you took a straight shit on this movie. Wish you would have done that for Pineapple Express because that was a huge chunk of shit with all the funny parts from the commercial. I never really thought this movie looked good, but I'll check out eventually.
  • BethanyP · 7 months ago
why does everybody hate pineapple express? i hated it the first time i watched it, but upon multiple rewatchings, i started to warm to it, and now love (most) of it.

great review. sorry you feel like the "damn fool kids with their rock and roll music" critic, but you argued your points well and...wow, am i grading you? forget it. great review. i'm still going to pay to see the movie though, because i love jody hill very simply because he's involved in eastbound & down: best show ever.
  • snobographer · 7 months ago
Why would you rewatch something multiple times when you hate it in the first place? Just watch something else.
  • Patrick Ramser · 7 months ago
I haven't seen this movie yet Robert, but I can see some of your points from seeing the trailers. I, personally, am more of a darker, ridiculous movie type, but I'd really just like to say I understand your points also. I actually cheer them, not many people have the balls or brains to post something like you did and then support it with evidence.

Question though: I'm seeing this tomorrow and uh, well, did this have any signs of satire? I just remembered some of those videos a while back of cops beating the shit out of kids and being assholes and remember how shocking they were and how up-in-arms so many people got. Could Jody be pointing a finger at people who actually do laugh at this movie?

Was just a thought. And again, props Fure.
  • RobertFure · 7 months ago
I don't know Hill's motivations other than he did want to make a unique movie about a rough character, which he did. Sure, there is satire here. Maybe not in the kid beating part, but overall, yeah. I think what it came down to for me really was that for a movie that is this dark and depressing, yet wanting to make you laugh, for that to work, the film needs to wink at the audience once in awhile. In O&R, the winks were slapsticky and didn't fit the tone, making it uneven and not fulfilling the purpose. In a movie like "Postal" which tries very hard to be blatantly offensive (killing lots of kids, holocaust jokes, 9/11 jokes, etc) they did a great job of looking at the audience and winking and saying "Hey this is terrible, but we're just poking fun at you." Observe and Report said "This is terrible, laugh at it because its terrible!"

It messed itself up in trying to juggle ultra-serious-hardcore-whatever (a la Taxi Driver comparisons) and comedy and came off like a bad spoof movie. I think that's the best way to describe it. A Taxi Driver spoof movie that forgot the comedy. So consider this "Taxi Driver Movie" and you'll see how I felt it came across.
  • blckmanjew · 7 months ago
slug from atmosphere told the crowd last night to "don't go see that movie, its the worst fucking movie ever"
  • witchyflickchic · 7 months ago
I definitely did hate the movie, certainly not as much as you, but it certainly did sit well with me either and I think you gave voice to several of the reasons why, especially the incredibly hollow and shallow female lead.
  • newageslacker · 7 months ago
I find it absolutely HILARIOUS that you state what you like about films ex. violence, but then say the movie had to much of it? Here's what you "didn't get" the fact that there is an over use of violence, which there really wasn't that much maybe three scenes, MAKES THE MOVIE FUNNY! pick a side retard.
  • ANGRYBROOMSTICK · 7 months ago
you're not the only one who hate this movie. lots of critics hate it. HATE it.
  • RobertFure · 7 months ago
What I clearly stated was that I normally love violence. When it is used correctly. This movie had over the top violence in an attempt to shock and awe the audience. I didn't like it. I cheer when heads get blown up in horror flicks, but the violence didn't fit this movie, so I didn't like it. And while there are at least 3 scenes that include bloody violence, there are at least two more that are violent but not bloody.

Hardcore blood and violence (handled seriously) in my comedy is like mayonnaise in my chocolate pudding. Shit don't work.
  • Chris · 7 months ago
Robert, you really didn't get the movie, and I'm not just saying that. Head on over to /Film and read Hunter's essay/review. He understood the movie and eloquently explained why it kicks so much ass. He makes your article look retarded.
  • RobertFure · 7 months ago
Hunter begins with slobbering all over Jody Hill. If Jody Hill shit on a plate (which he did, then projected it onto the screen in Observe and Report), Hunter would love it. No offense to Hunter. He can like what he wants.

But this movie sucked. You want to know the true litmus test of whether or not it sucked? Are all the "edgy" critics defending it rather than reviewing it? The answer is yes. No one from the New York Times or Christian Science Monitor was going to like this film. But you just knew that the on-liners were going to love it. Devin at Chud ridiculously rated this movie a 10/10 (even admitting its flaws in that conclusion) and Hunter wrote a dissertation on the movie. They're defending it, not reviewing. Just like when Watchmen came out and all the fanboys defended it from detractors.

Only I can make my article look retarded, no one else's opinion has any influence on mine. You clearly don't agree with me - that's cool. My personal opinion is the movie blew.
  • Screen Rant · 7 months ago
That's EXACTLY what I think about all the "you don't get it" or "aren't ready for it" reviews/comments. Smear some dog crap on a canvas and this type will ooh and ahh about how cutting edge and avante garde it is - but these same folks will call a beautiful oil painting boring and cliche.
  • Kangaroo Be Stoned · 7 months ago
I don't want to get into a debate about this, but I don't think Ronnie raped Brandi. She made the choice to get drunk as hell. When you get drunk, you know beforehand that you could make irrational choices while under the influence of alcohol. She also gave consent. That is evidenced by her "why are you stopping?" comment when Ronnie stops thrusting. Is Ronnie an asshole for taking advantage of her? Absolutely.
  • RobertFure · 7 months ago
In California without a doubt what he did constitutes rape. There is a long legal precedent in CA.
  • BethanyP · 7 months ago
remind me never to go to a frat party with you. ;)
  • Kangaroo Be Stoned · 7 months ago
    Fortunately I don't attend parties, I don't drink, I don't sleep with drunk chicks, and I don't have one-night stands.
  • BethanyP · 7 months ago
oh my god! not even one of those things?! if i cleared my schedule of that, i'm not sure what would be left. would every day be like thanksgiving? in its own right, that is impressive sir.
  • Kangaroo Be Stoned · 7 months ago
I don't attend parties because I don't like the atmosphere; loud crappy music, drunk people, smoking, etc. I don't drink alcohol because I think it's stupid. I don't get drunk because I think it's stupid to drink alcohol. I don't have one night stands because I like to be in a relationship with someone I sleep with.
  • BethanyP · 7 months ago
kudos, baby. whatever gets you through.
  • Tenika · 7 months ago
To the people who thought this movie was funny-

Where? When? My problem with the movie has nothing to do with it being too dark or too violent. Nothing to do with tone, or language, or possible date rape. My problem with the film is it's NOT FUNNY. SERIOUSLY. IT'S NOT FUNNY. The whole movie feels like an SNL skit that will not f*cking end.
  • Kangaroo Be Stoned · 7 months ago
    SPOILERS FOLLOW

I laughed my ass off throughout the entire movie except for the drunken sex scene. I laughed at Michael Pena's role. I laughed at the target-shooting scene because it reminds me of the Americans who cling to their precious guns. I laughed at the violence because it is the usual Hollywood-exaggerated violence. In reality, those police officers would not have gotten up after being hit in the head with such force by a flashlight. I laughed at the end when Ronnie shot the streaker because it came out of nowhere and it showed us just how crazy Ronnie is.

Well if that doesn't speak to the mentality of the type of person who liked this movie, nothing does.
  • Kangaroo Be Stoned · 7 months ago
In regards to your #2 hate: Ronnie is bipolar. When he is off his medication, he is manic and delusional. That would explain his delusional behavior, which I guess would explain his violence.
  • Chris · 7 months ago
Rape is funny. That scene was amazing.
  • Screen Rant · 7 months ago
Chris you represent all that is awful about the internet.

Robert Fure, In my opinion perhaps you shouldn't have watched this movie. It's obviously not for you, I loved this movie from start to end, it took moments were you knew what would had and went the opposite way, something different. If you look out on IMDB.com it has a 7.1 rating as of today which is about right. Perhaps you should stray away from reviews you can't comprehend.
  • Neil Miller · 7 months ago
In fairness to Robert, that's sort of the point of him writing this piece. Well, not just to hate on the movie, but to provide his perspective. We actually prefer that our writers aren't always just writing about the movies they love.

That said, he's totally wrong... the movie was awesome. ;)
  • 790 · 7 months ago
Ah Chris, I'd like to drop you in a Federal prison and have you wear a T-shirt that says, "rape is funny". We get a few inmates to film what happens to you, and we can all laugh, ha ha cause rape is funny.
Maybe for the finale we can get someone to shove a angry broomstick up your ass and watch as they break it off. Ah the laughs would be non stop. Prob even get a PG-13 rating.

I have no interest in seeing this mirror universe Paul Blart Mall Cop bs.
Seth Rogen, you just got your ass kicked by Hannah Montanna. Low talent Diarrhea beat out the No talent constipated fatass this weekend.

Yeah yeah my comment is awaiting moderation again,,,,
  • BethanyP · 7 months ago
hey guys. maybe the movie is BIPOLAR, so half of you will like it and half of you won't.
  • MrDeath · 7 months ago
I love hate on the internet. It's so funny.

I'm confused weather or not I should see this movie. I mean, I liked the trailer, but from what I've heard it's nothing like how it's marketed.
  • D Train · 7 months ago
Robert, I was wondering what you thought about Eastbound & Down. My friends love it so I watched every episode... And it seems that the same criticisms you have of Jody Hills new movie, I have of his TV show. While I think Danny McBride is a genius and his his one-liners are some of the best I've ever heard, I have a hard time identifying with his character. The overall tone of the show seems to be purposely heartless, which, coincidentally I thought about Observe and Report.
  • foclanded · 7 months ago
This movie was the most culturally and morally bankrupt piece of &%$# I have ever wasted my money on. I am incredibly sorry that I supported this movie and wasted an hour of my life sitting through half of it. Comedies generally can get away with some controversial material if they're funny. But watching someone in a position of authority beat up minors, take pictures of women changing, and shoot up drugs while working is not funny. I'm sorry. If this movie is a "fresh face for Hollywood" then &%$# Hollywood.
  • Arou101 · 7 months ago
I think the message for a lot of people was lost in translation, including for yourself. There was no "joke" to "get". The entire movie was delusional because the man himself was delusional. He was a nothing who made everything something--that was the point. Right there. A pathetic piece of shit who, like most pathetic pieces of shit, had to maintain a high level of self importance to cope with his shit life.

I was almost going to say some negative things about the 10 and 5, because well, most of the time these are irrelevant. However, when so many people are split I have to give you kudos for a more detailed opinion. I just wish someone who "got" it had a 10 and 5 here, I think the contrasting post would really help someone decide if they would enjoy the movie or not instead of comparing this to a regular review. Especially since the majority of the letter grades on this website are so off to what is written in the review.

    Sorry dude, I'm a pedantic arsehole. :-S
  • David G · 7 months ago
Was a COMPLETE waste of time. Didnt see it in theatres and glad. Would've been a waste of money too! Other than Faris and Aziz, this movie blew chunks! Liotta was'nt even used to be nearly as funny as he can be. Just like Pinapple Express, you'd have to be high to enjoy this movie I guess. I would'nt know. That stuff is a waste of time and money too. I agree 100% with Fure on this one.
  • dragonmum · 7 months ago
Yeah, every commercial is marketing it as a comedy, but from everyone I'm reading here, on both sides of the hate/love line, it doesn't look like it, so I probably won't see it. Reminds me of Arachnaphobia (am I showing my age here? lol) that was marketed as a comedy... my parents all of us kidlings to see it. My sis wouldn't turn off a lamp or take a shower for a week afterwards. I still check my shoes for spiders before I put them on. lol
  • UnblinkingEye · 7 months ago
Wow, alot of either "Loved It" or "Hated It" and no middle ground. I'm going to try to stand in the middle (and get hit by both sides). I liked the film, and I think I "got it," but this was definately marketed as a "comedy" and I "get" and enjoy the dark humor in it. The filmmakers could of played it straight and you know I would have still enjoyed it, possibly even a little more (hell, I snicker throughout Taxi Driver, and Ronnie could very well be the bastard child of Travis Bickle). I think the key point in this film is when the detective's fellow detective steps out of the closet and said " You know I thought this was going to be funny, but this is actually pretty sad." I think that summed up the film.
  • Zolar · 7 months ago
Exactly right, Robert. This fail of a movie made me say ffffuuuu. And I'm sick of the phonies who go around "explaining" it and don't seem all that smart despite all their fuckery. This movie sucks for all the reasons you gave. Aziz and the flasher were the only funny parts in the whole awful crapfest. It felt like if you made a movie about the 9/11 terrorists in which all of them actually got virgins at the end.
  • HempKnight 757 · 7 months ago
foclanded ur uptight bitch. & i didn't like pineapple express because all the funny scenes were in the preview as i stated before
  • Josh_Radde · 7 months ago
I'm with you Fure, that movie was just bad. I get the whole "Look at how ridiculous Americans are that get fat, go to malls, shoot guns, get drunk, and blah blah blah" but it's not funny to simply point it out. There's a line between parody and satire that this movie keeps blurring. And sometimes blurring the line is great, but this goes for the easy joke at every given opportunity. That's just bad writing.

I can't believe this movie is so polarizing. I just thought it was largely forgettable, not worth getting all huffy about.
  • Tron · 7 months ago
Just a question to the people who 'loved this movie'

can any of you (with any level of honesty) say you would have seen this movie if seth rogan HADNT starred in it?

I'm sure the majority of people who saw this did because Seth was in it. And he seems to quickly be becoming the new Will Ferrell (another 'comedian' who just isn't funny) In that it seems he's in a newly released movie every 3 months.

I personally don't find him all that funny. Not HIS fault. Just with a few exceptions I don't find ANY of the characters he plays in movies to be funny. And ok thats just my opinion but i'm wondering if say they had cast.. I dunno some no name as the star if anyone would have seen this.
  • maxwell fleming · 7 months ago
Dude, everyone has the right to their own opinion, and if you didn't like it than you didn't like it. But, to call it unoriginal is f-ing retarded. This film could have easily been an R-rated Paul Blart: Mall Cop with Rogen doing his same lovable, sad-sack routine, and everyone enjoying a straight forward happy ending. But it caught me totally off-guard. I had no idea where it was going and had my eyes glued to the screen the entire time. Half the time I was laughing, half the time I was shaking my head in awe, so pumped that a film like this can be made, probably on the star power of Rogen. The film was an uncompromising creation influenced by Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy. Dark, yes. But entertaining as hell. Roegn is an anti-hero, and sorry if he didn't fit the mold you were looking for. But again, if you didn't like it, I'm not here to change your mind.
