    It's Coen, not Cohen.

I blame the copy editor, ugh.

I blame the vile of ether you dared me to sniff before copy-editing.

    It's vial, not vile.
  • akira · 6 months ago
It was the vial's fault, obviously

Everything you said is pretty spot on. I saw this in the theater and laughed my ass off, but my then-girlfriend who went with me didn't care for it. I think a lot of people had to watch this a couple of times to really get into it.

Also, the blond cop is totally the guy from Brisco County, Jr.

"I wouldn't hold out much hope for the tape deck, though..."
    "Or the Creedence."

The only thing I can say about this movie that hasn't been said here or elsewhere is that if you're a fan of this movie, it's so good and so watchable that it makes your life better.

You can watch it again and again.
You can pull it out when you need cheering up.
You can share it with friends.
You can share your love if it with your friends.
When you meet someone who references it, you immediately know they're probably cool.
    That's pretty amazing.

"if you're a fan of this movie, it's so good and so watchable that it makes your life better."

    I wholeheartedly agree.

This movie is so quotable that there are even quotable parts from the terribly edited For Television version:

"This is what happens Larry! This is what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps!"

What other film do you know that has recognizable PG-ified quotes when it's on TBS?
  • Bethany P · 6 months ago
    Half-Baked.

"What's that stuff? We used to eat it back in the day? Oh yeah, PUDDIN'."
  • D Rock · 6 months ago
Snakes on a Plane on FX

"I've had it with these monkey fighting snakes on this Monday to Friday plane!"
  • PaulSileo · 6 months ago
"This is what happens Larry! This is what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps!"

    What does that even mean?

i don't know, but i REALLY love just looking at people sometimes and going "Pilar?"

favorite movie. also, seriously...your lead-in quote? totally brilliant and underutilized. and YES, to brandt. everything he does is great. i declared PSH my favorite actor after my 278th viewing of this movie. best line in the movie? "well, Dude, we just don't know."
  • PaulSileo · 6 months ago
When Bunny says that Brand can't watch, or he has to pay a hundred, the laugh that PSH does is absolutely priceless. The in-and-out flaring of the nostrils is fucking money.

My favorite scene or the moment I fell in love is right after The Dude and Maude Lebowski have sex and he asks her what she's doing... to which she responds "It increases the chances of conception." When he spits out his White Russian and it's caught in his beard. That has me in stitches every single time

    "Oh! So that doctor..."

also, wanted to say... the first time i saw this movie i HATED it. i was forced to watch it once a week for like a year by BIL's college friends. ....after about 6 weeks, it was my favorite movie ever. great article paul. i have now read this thrice.

If you liked the movie, check out The Dude's Last Supper. Its a painting of the last supper with the Lebowksi characters. It's amazing, you have to see it to believe it.
