Great choice. Hell this is an awesome film. I do think if it hits you at the right age it can be a seminal film (in a good way, I plan no ironic rapes). I first watched it back in January and haven't watched films the same way since.
Also the soundtrack is a staple on my iPhone, bitchin cool.
However, when I was about 15 this came on cable TV. (Sometime around 1980?) My dad didn't really understand the film, but he knew I liked Science Fiction and he knew this film was important. He sat up and watched it with me, way past my bedtime and his, and he didn't say one word to discourage me from watching it or question once why I clearly was loving the film. I'll never forget that act of kind understanding from my father (Who wasn't known for understanding wosdom.) nor the impact this film had on me.
I've read the book seen the film several times since then, on the big screen as well as TV. I'm still continually impressed and amazed by how great an accomplishment this film is and I'm still drawn back to those memories of my dad.
Kudos for the excellent review. I've never heard the song "Singing In The Rain" the same way since.
