Film School Rejects: Michael Caine Gives Weight to Batman 3 Casting Rumors

  • Trace · 1 year ago
So long as whoever they cast puts in the time and dedication that Heath did, I'm game.
  • Jeremy M · 1 year ago
I think Caine is feeding the rumor machine.

I really hope they stop multiplying villains in sequels. each villain should have his own shot
at a movie. Unless they have a brilliant way to tie two villains together they should be left
alone. The mixture of twoface and the joker was well done because twoface wasn't the
character everyone emotionally invested in. Harvey Dent was. And he wasn't really a 'villain'.

Ugh - two of the worst Batman villains. What poor choices. I hope these are just rumors and slight-of-hand. Otherwise, the franchise is heading into Schumacher territory.
  • HempKnight757 · 1 year ago
Sounds good to me they both could def. kill the parts just as long as Depp doesn't come off like he did in Secret Window more funny than scary & Phillip doesn't shart himself again or however its spelled.
  • Jason · 1 year ago
I think both could be awesome in the roles. I was watching 'The Prestige' the other day, and as you may know Andy Serkis (Gollum) is in it, and I thought he could play an interesting Riddler. Who knows.
  • Sam · 1 year ago
I love Hoffman, I just don't know about The Penguin character for the Nolanverse.

I think I made an argument before (and other people probably have) that the Riddler makes sense as a villain if he's turned into a serial killer, and not some silly guy in tights who does way too much coke.
  • Cole Abaius · 1 year ago
Sam, as a guy in tights who does way too much coke, I'm offended. This is an outrage.
  • Sam · 1 year ago
Well, Cole, I think we can probably find you a place in the live action ambiguously gay duo as a consolation prize.
  • JMoney · 1 year ago
i agree with Sam, the penguin can't really fit into this realistic Batman universe, i don't think people really want to see a movie about a flipper baby.

But the Riddler could work as a serial killer, but I'm not convinced Depp would be good in the role, sometimes he is too over the top for me, and it would be hard to reign him in. The riddler would have to be very dark and i cant see depp pulling it off

I wouldn't count out Depp as the Riddler, I think he could handle that part pretty well. He has a lot of range and experience playing creepy characters in films.

But I agree with Sam about turning him into a serial killer, Jim Carey's Riddler was idiotic at best, just some fruit loop in tights who looked zonked out on coke most of the time.
  • Jeremy M · 1 year ago
The riddler could be like jig saw from the saw movies! OMFG
  • Rid & Peng · 1 year ago
Johnny Depp would be perfect to play the part but for Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Penguin? Maybe. I can see why because of his top performance in 'Capote" I would see it but Penguin would be unreal. I could imagine Catwoman or anyone else. I love Nolan for what he does best and I think he can make it work.
For Caine's remarks? I think he is feeding rumours but they are good ones. Not the Cher or Stallone in Dark Knight.
Oh BTW, I don't Like Dark Knight Returns as the title, it seems overdone too much with "Returns" in the title (like "Superman Returns", "Batman Returns", etc…). How about the "Dark Knight: The Caped Crusader" sounds dark and awesome. Well thats my opinion.
  • Sam · 1 year ago
@Rig & Peng, I'm just going to throw this out there, but The Dark Knight Returns was a comic book mini series by Frank Miller in the 80s.
  • HAGE · 1 year ago
also, rid & peng, this was the only batman movie title without the word batman in it, and
the caped crusader seems a bit much for nolanverse. TDK the novel was such an icon, that
nolan definitely knew what he was doing when he decided to use the same title. I just hope
the next sequel doesnt go for the dark knight strikes again. LOL

I think Johnny Depp has the range for Riddler (think Sweeney Todd but maybe less
vengeful), and PSH is equally ranged but he has to be pretty damn dedicated to his
    role.

I'm kind of curious what it would look like if for one, they replaced Heath with Paul
Bettany or Daniel Day Lewis. I know the latter of the two is a little old, but I'm
convinced he can play anything and Paul Bettany is pretty underrated out there and
to my understanding, he was the first one to cross Nolan's mind as the Joker's role.
And we all know the Joker SHOULDN'T be finished, but I mean if he is, that's fine
    too, I guess.

Also, I'd like to see someone like Black Mask, he's twisted and psychotic, perhaps
almost as much as the Joker.

Finally, I would not be too disappointed if they got Angelina Jolie for Catwoman
even though that is also a rumor. I know sometimes the big names can get in the
way, but I feel like the strong cast has a huge influence... and plus like the studio
says, they need to top Heath some way and somehow.

I see the Riddler more as the Kevin Spacey character from Seven, and i don't think Johnny Depp can play that restrained
  • Amol_Ghadi · 1 year ago
Yes, Depp is TOO LOUD an actor to play the Riddler. Also Depp has a Larger Than Life image of himself among movie watchers. And no Actor can be larger than the Character itself. Or else, the movie is doomed(sorry for the forbidden word). Remember, Ledger was a Nobody when compared to the immortal Joker, The Batman's ultimate nemesis. Hell! No one even imagined for Ledger to play the Joker. And to begin with, The Riddler himself is just like a miniature Joker IMO. And the Penguin? In the Nolan World, he may be a character, difficult to but not impossible to handle. Penguin will be challenge. Batman Returns' Penguin was a nasty, too serious character created not keeping adolescent and children audience in mind. In fact he was not enjoyable even for adults. He was that serious (in a Batman movie or not).

I also presume watching Nolan's Batman, we are not children anymore which was a period in our life when we used to pull the ponytails of and fight with our younger (or elder) sister unconscionably and carelessly. Atleast I, as a grown up man, would not like to see an angry, vicious Batman beating the hell out of a hapless Female Villain. Females are meant to be loved and respected and NOT beaten and fought with even if they are villains(Catwoman, Talia-al-Ghul, Harley Quinn,...).

As somebody said, If any villain fits perfectly in the Nolan's world it is THE BLACK MASK who is dirty, dark and evil enough with no jokes. And also I would like to see justice done to the character of Batman-Back-Breaker Bane who was wronged so horrifically in the dust-bin movie Batman & Robin. Also (if possible) Mr. Freeze should be done again. If not in the 3rd then in the 4th Part if Nolan or any other competant director comes at the helm of Batman 4. Because The Black Mask deserves a place in a Batman movie.

    If Harley Quinn- Zooey Deschanel
    If Poisen Ivy-Alicia Witt
    If Riddler- Johnny Depp
If Catwoman- Shannyn Sossamon, Rachel Weisz, Olivia Wilde, or Connie Nielsen

Forget Depp as the Riddler. I think the perfect choice would be to go for Crispin Glover. He's perfect for the part. He's the right build and he could totally play a psycho like the Riddler.
  • Helen · 10 months ago
Harley would be an awesome villain, but as much as I love her character Harley is just not as good without her puddin' (Joker)
  • Helen · 10 months ago
pardon, the movie would not be as good without both Harley and the Joker
  • David G · 10 months ago
It doesnt seem plausable that Depp would do Riddler just after doin the Mad Hatter for Alice in Wonderland. I doubt he'd do it. But I agree that a darker and psychotic Riddler would be great. As long as they use someone else. The Penguin thing has got to be a joke, he'd be ridiculous.
