Film School Rejects: Lesson Learned: America Loves Crossdressers

Mladen · 9 months agoA little suprised you didn't mention the classic comedy: "Some Like it Hot" with Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Maralyn Monroe

Adam_Sweeney · 9 months agoDamn it. I actually had written Some Like it Hot down in my notes! I was going to point out how even in a conservative era, we still were okay with characters crossing over (So long as it was in the attempt to get Marilyn Monroe. Although Jack Lemmon does imply that he will stay with the guy hitting on him at the end, yes?)

flameyheadgear · 9 months agoThis phenomenon isn't restricted to cinema: it contributed a great deal to the success of Monty Python and Kids in the Hall, as well. It isn't something you see as often on American television, but up here and over in the U.K., it's de rigeur. Those programs did do quite well in the U.S., though, if I can recall...

ANGRYBROOMSTICK · 9 months agoI fuckin love Rocky Horror Picture Show... other notables may be PARTY MONSTER and HEDWING AND THE ANGRY INCH.

ANGRYBROOMSTICK · 9 months agoI'm also a huge fan of "The Birdcage" and the late 70s European original, La Cage Aux Follies.

Adam_Sweeney · 9 months agoThanks for the reply. I'm aware that the phenomenon isn't restricted to cinema. However, this is mainly a film site, so that is why we focused on that particular area. :)

flameyheadgear · 9 months agoI know, m'dear, just an observation that we seem to like crossdressers enough to embrace them as frequently as television programming allows. Characters crossing over is less and less a novelty, I think, because of television. I should 'ave said.

Adam_Sweeney · 9 months agoI think that's a good point. I do think there is a big difference between what we accept in the realm of media and what we would tolerate in reality.
