Film School Rejects: King Crowns New ‘Mist’ Ending Shocking, Amazing

  • Dovetastic · 2 years ago
The ending ruined the film and it portrays cruelty to children in the worst way imaginable and demonstrates an awful pathetic pity towards the intellect of humanity in trying situations in a most implausible way. Don't waste your money seeing this awful film. I do not know what the original ending was but what I do know is this is the worst ending I have seen since they produced Arlington Road. I feel the producer should be ashamed of him self and I think Steven King knows alot better than this as I am a fan of his works.

well, dovetastic, that was the whole point of the movie, of how we humans are mere savages when we introduce a little fear. I thought it was a very artistic film and I very much enjoyed it. As for the ending, I thought it was deep. It was a very bold step and it left me shocked, but it's something different and that's what we need. That was a very difficult movie to create an ending for. Those movies are always hard to end but it was defiantly not a waste of money.

I saw the film today and the ending was very disturbing indeed. i have been a fan of horror and sci fi movies ever since I began going to movies as a kid and I am 57 now. I have enjoyed all the novels and short stories I ever read by King but I have always been let down by the screen play adaptations-except The Shining. For the most part, except for one or two, they all sucked. This one did a number on my mind. Hey- it was supposed to be a HORROR movie, right ?
We all got our money's worth and then some with this one, that's for sure.

I THINK THAT THE ENDING WAS GOOD, it shows what he was going through and
how much pain he was going through loosing all those people and they could of been saved.

The dad took the coward's way out. The should have kept pressing onward. The end was probably written as a a five minute afterthought.
    What utter rubbish.
  • Marcus · 1 year ago
They all lost hope the minute they thought the world had become a living Hell. They crossed human endurance and lost hope. He did what he did so they wouldn't suffer any longer. It's funny how people say it's kind to put down an animal when it's suffering, yet it's cruelty when he was trying to spare them anymore trauma. The ending did what it intended to do as a movie. It left a lasting impression. Good or bad, you won't forget it tonight.
  • Supa · 1 year ago
I liked it, cuz the ending left a moral that humans are savages even of little fear. I also noticed that the alien monsters from the other dimension were not the main subject of the movie. the ending was deep wen he killed his son and everyone. i think the end shows that humanity suffered a big disaster, but did not come to extinction. like an F in math, then u get an A next semester.

I was disappointed with the ending, I felt it left a lot unanswered (what happened to the remaining people in the grocery store?). Initially I thought the ending was going to take a more biblical approach - I was sure that divine intervention would occur before the father killed his son (like God was testing Abraham to see if he would actually kill his own son, as a test of his loyalty) or the religious zealot forcing the few to run to safety and, in a round about way, getting what she had prayed for "to save the good souls".
I guess it was a representation of how easily humans give up when faced with a daunting problem.
  • Judas Priest · 1 year ago
jamie dude, it showed what happened to the peeple that were at the grocery store?

I hated the ending! It was horrible! It showed cruelty to children! When I go to see a horror movie, I expect--always--a happy ending! Why couldn't he make it so that all the big bad monsters couldn't hurt little boys? How could a father be so cruel to his own son!

Ummm...Enchanted was down the hall to the LEFT. You took a right. :)

Personally I believe the ending was cliche and pointless, I just got back from the movie and I have never been so disappointed by an ending in my life. Personally I wish I had walked out of the movie theater as soon as the gas ran out of the car because then I would have loved the movie and placed it among the best "sci-fi/government scandal/alien attack" movie I have ever seen. The little things such as the movie posters from The Thing and Gunslinger, or even the natural way the people acted and spoke. It was all squashed with the obligatory "military shows up 2 seconds too late" scenario that played out.

I know I will get mocked for some stupid reason or another but you guys really need to step back for a second and realize the ending added nothing to this movie, in fact it hurt it more then helped it.
  • tim · 1 year ago
The ending was dumb and unrealistic. It was f'd up and pointless. After drayton and his kid and their amigos survived such an ordeal already, its time to end it all after driving south a bit? I think not, fellow moviegoers! Why not like search around a little, maybe head west, to see how far the mist has spread? You know? How gay this is! We see there are plenty of cars available on the road to commandeer. The food market still stands. Maybe theres a gas station? And other food marts? And so on, and so on, etc. Anyway, i wasnt a fan of the ending. Yeah, it was shocking, so i guess in that moment i was shocked. Whatever.

How can ANYONE be so DENSE to expect all horror movies to end happily ? This is the FIRST great point of this movie--for once we see the hero suffer, not everything is "happy happy, joy joy" --try reading some horror fiction, especially some Koontz or some of King's actual novels--NOT the movie versions--quite dark if you ask me !! The second good point to this movie is the irony of Draytons situation--(that if only... )
Third, excellent effects, and faithfulness to the original story !!!
Fourth, The Mist's ending has one of the BEST bar NONE "reveals" I have ever seen !!! Try THE HAMILTONS sometime--youll see what I mean by awesome "reveals" in that one !
Fifth, I will say this--that one of the deepest themes of the movies IS--now PAY ATTENTION-- Never Give Up Hope--this is the message, we should all see to in our own lives !!! Even in our darkest hour, our lowest point, we should as long as we have breath, we should keep trying !! Remeber what Ollie said earlier on,..." look at what people do in the name of religion and poliitics!!!! " Also, David said to notice what happens when fear is brought into the picture, take away the lights, the authority, the normalcy, etc etc--see what some might do.. True this situation was WAY to the extreme.. But think about this--this was a FICTION movie, allow some DRAMATIC LICENSE---!!!!! Yes, he might have done some things different,--remember time was of the essence, no one would have TIME to debate the issues.. Those who havent read the original story REALLY SHOULD !! You people who knock this movie need to go back to your BEOWULF, Somthing About Mary,, South Park, Friends and Seinfeld forms of reality, and DONT even BOTHER with these kind of FANTASY flicks !
I recommend this movie VERY VERY VERY highly to the true horror fan!!

I just saw the movie like 1 hour ago and loved it to death. When he grabbed the gun off the car I predicted what going to happen. And I was right which made it so much better.
  • ekul · 1 year ago
I personally liked the movie and the ending was a bit weird but I guess in terms of words, they had just given up hope! What more is there to say, the world is in ruins 'at the moment,' and they 'think' that those 'things' are still out there to 'kill them. What would you do? Make them suffer for what you think would happen and hope for the best, or just end it all? Personally, good movie, okay ending, I would say a recommended movie to watch.
  • fderdi · 1 year ago
The ending of this movie is not good, it is virtuoso - one of the best I've ever seen.
Movies are not exclusively for your entertainment, they are mirrors of humanbeing, of society and psyche. The last 2 minutes of the film make the whole thing artistic.
It IS horrible and it does make you feel sick, because the situation is the worst a man could EVER go through. The whole movie is - and so are most novellas by King - about the deep fears of human psyche. It's about analylising what goes on in people in special situations, and those can be reflected on all day life. This psychological elements cause what we call "horror" in King's books, REAL horror.
A good man kills his friends and family. A decision he makes on his own. We hardly can fathom the fear, this man is confronted with - the climax of tragedy. A solution for an ending, that finally makes us think and feel. It's traumatizing horror - simply great.

If you judge this film for its monsters and special effects, you better watch Jurassic Park. "The Mist" is about more than shallow crap ...
  • Nathan Gamble · 1 year ago
The ending of the movie is to show how someone would react and what you would do if you thought there was no hope left.
  • namerequired · 1 year ago
This was one of the FUNNIEST movie endings I have seen in a while. All the main characters of the movie were two dimensional. To put it in other terms they were all in the extremes ends of human nature and they all paid a price for that.

No excuse for this turd of a film. The movie was mediocre at best (fake looking special FX) prior to the completely stupid and pointless ending that presents itself as a great big F YOU to the audience, well in retaliation I think we should respond in kind and vow never to watch another darabont film or read another stephen king book (they're milquetoast anyway). It seems like more and more movies are taking this route these days, it's as if they're thinking "if we can't be good or original, at least we can still try to be shocking." Seriously, who goes to the movies to feel like they got gut punched afterwards, my theory is the only people who enjoy movies like this and accept such pointless endings are those who apparently don't already have enough stress in their lives as it is (kids, mental dwarfs, etc.) Reality is brutal enough as it is, who wants to spend their money and free time being brutalized like this, especially during the holiday season. Darabont, King, Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, anyone envolved with this film should feel ashamed of themselves.

The ending made no sense when you take into account the amount of damage that the creatures caused in such a short time. A tank vs that giant walking monstrosity is a joke, not to mention a bunch of infantry in NBC suits in zero visibility vs fast moving spiders with acid webs. The ending was fine as long as they fought to the bitter end, but instead they just run out of gas and they all give up. They are in the middle of nowhere and could probably make it to another car fairly easily considering how littered the roads were with vehicles. Lets not forget the army is about a quarter mile away looking for survivors, but not using their bullhorns or shooting anything?! I guess all the critters just lined up to be bbq'd. Whatever happened to the flying creatures?

Two major deviations - One - they never clued into the mist creatures being smell based hunters, and Two - how did they close the rift?!? The first could have given them some chance that would have allowed them to get a little farther than the rest (think perfume bombs) and then die properly due to an unforeseen problem (leaky bottle). The second is even worse since the rift would have been *crawling* with critters, and if that giant monstrosity could fit through then the rift must have been massive. I think somebody would have noticed a 100 MT nuke going off which the military would use to sterilize the area (not a direct hit on the rift) and then send in the troops and scientists to close the rift, once the radiation starts to diminish.

    A better ending -
Drayton is back into a corner and has to sacrifice the older two leaving their bodies to distract the critters. He finds a new vehicle and is just starting to drive away when he witnesses the mushroom cloud. David realizes that it was all for nothing, that everyone in the mist (100 km) was killed either directly or indirectly by humans, and dies yelling F'U while holding his son. Now that's horror.

OK, so i love that movie , and some of you guys comments , specially from you people who didnt like the movie , made me wonder if you were retarded or something , 1- you knew you were going to see a horror movie , not mary poppins 2- the ending was GREAt , it wasnt cruelty to children it wasent a decision that the guy mde on his own... i dont know if you saw the same movie as me , but the main caracter killed his friend and son cause everybody lost hope, he sacrificed himself to be able to give a good death to his friends , he prefers killings his son quickly rather than giving him up to the beasts outside , If that's cruelty i dont know on wich planet youre living on ...
ok i admitt the movies had some flaws , like showing maybe a bit too much monsters... but after reading the novel then seeing the move i can say this is one goood adaptation
  • Jesse · 1 year ago
I really liked this movie...but I just thought the ending was VERY unrealistic,an easy way for the director to "shock" everyone. I mean come on...if you are strong enough to survive all the horror that has already happened why just decide to GIVE UP???....I understand that they would rather kill themselves then let the monsters eat them...but at the very least they should have just chilled out in the car for atleast a day or even a couple of hours...who knows who might come along???....and after that they could just go out on foot and try to survive...TERRIBLE ending in my opinion...in went against the theme of the movie
  • Whaaat? · 1 year ago
The film was moving along fantastically until the ending. It totally distroyed the movie for me. What a load of crap.
  • Mark · 1 year ago
First off, I read the short story years ago, and then last year listened to the audio book. For those of you who dont like the ending then listen to the audio book or read the short story.

I have never been so shocked at the end of a movie. Disturbing doesnt come close to describing it. I loved this movie! Please remember that this isnt an award winning movie, its a short story turned into a movie that will make you squirm.

BEST ENDING IN A HORROR MOVIE EVER. And for the twits who complained about what happend to the kid...ITS A HORROR MOVIE DUMMY, its rated R. Is there a law that says that only adults can have something bad happen to them in a horror movie?
  • MovieDUDE · 1 year ago
The ending reminded me of the clue movie with multiple endings. In which some of the endings don't really match up to the rest of the story very well.

I just don't think that it fit the main characters personalities laid out by the rest of the movie.

It really felt cookie cuttered in.
  • P'ed off · 1 year ago
I hope this director never directs agian. Stephen King should be ashamed.

What a cop out ending. See what happens when the real writers go on strike and directors have to make a ending on their own.
  • Duran Bobb · 1 year ago
In my own defense (#11 above) I was being sarcastic with the first paragraph...notice how the second paragraph says: ENCHANTED WAS DOWN THE HALL???

I personally loved the movie and the ending. Finally, years after reading the sell-out, cheating version in Skeleton Crew, I got my ending! Those of us who read the story out of the book should have gotten free tickets over that one.

Want a better story? Write it yourself, I always say. :)
  • drwax · 1 year ago
Like most, i loved this movie until the end, it doesn't matter to me if the ending is happy or shocking but when making a movie like this the people watching want to feel as if they were there! As if they are the characters in the movie going through
what they went through. So tell me how many of you would kill your son who had no say in the matter. you think the kid said sure dad go ahead pull the trigger i got
nothing left to live for anyways. Oh but wait the people that loved the ending are going to say well father knows best. So those people are saying they would kill there children sooner then need be cause well i just dont see a way out right now. Wonder how many sporting events those people left only to find out the home team
scored at the last second. He had the gun it wasnt going anywhere, if the situation became dire then he can still take there lifes. This is so typical of directors these days, what kind of taboo can i cross that will scar the people and well we know all the freaks and mentaly ill soon to be axe killers will love this ending because well hey were offing a 8 year old kill. ( dood did you see the way his kid looked at him right before he offed him? ya i know dood that was the bomb! hey lets go pull wings off butterflys... ya that would be sweeet dood lets go) Endings dont always have to be happy thats fine but they dont have to cross certain taboos to make a buck. I see more people upset with this ending then i do who like it, witch gets back to my point! 10 normal people for every 1 axe killer
  • Jonah Falcon · 1 year ago
The new ending would have been fine had it been in-character. It wasn't - it was completely out of left field and not true to the characters in the film. Rather than being an expansion to the original story, it came off as a cheap joke at the expense of story.

Additionally, it's also a Deus Ex Machina - Mankind is saved, even if the four characters weren't. A cop-out, to say the least. Having the characters continue to try to survive in an unlivable Earth is far more bleak than four of them being shot and the world being saved.
  • Steve · 1 year ago
I didn't like the plot holes. Why didn't the monsters break the glass and enter the supermarket? Why weren't the main characters attacked while driving? Surely they were not afraid of cars or glass windows. And finally, the end...Why oh why didn't they just LOOK FOR ANOTHER CAR. Who cares if it was out in the middle of nowhere, they were on a highway earlier and could have found a car with more gas.
  • Duran · 1 year ago
Steve: in the book, because the mist was so heavy and you could hardly see through it, the creatures relied on smell. Supposedly, if you blocked yourself off from the mist, they couldn't smell you anymore. You were invisible. Like smearing yourself up with insect repellent. That's why the tentacles in the story didn't attack the boxboy until the door was lifted. They put duct tape over the holes in the windows in the story. And the creatures didn't try to attack while they were driving, because they couldn't smell the people who weren't in the mist. Car emissions, I guess, just didn't interest the creatures. And I know what you mean, I would have been out looking for a gas can or a new car before I brought my gun out.

The movie was very good, considering it was a horror movie and was supposed to shock. I found that the religion and politics that took place in the food-mart with all those people flocking around that crazy woman really made the movie interesting. I especially like the part where someone actually decides to kill the woman and end her ravings. The end is another thing. It depends from what point of view you look at it. If you look at it saying, well its a Stephen King story so theres supposed to be a meaning in there somewhere, you can deduce they did it that way to pass the message that you should never give up hope. If you look at it from the point of view of someone who deeply analyses movies, you could see it was really made to be an ironic (but somewhat brutal ending since he kills his own son) ending, because he killed everyone just as the Military/Rescue/Heroic Cavalry/Alien-Killing Pro's were just a few minutes away from arriving. If you look at it from a typical Movie-goer point of view, then you will, not unlike me, be disappointed. I would have expected them to wait a few minutes in the car, then wake up to see the cavalry arriving and join the survivor convoy and have a future *rebuilding the civilization* type of thing. Plus, I had expected the blonde to become his new GF/wife. But anyways, good movie and questionable ending. I hope there's an alternate ending that fits my taste on the DVD-extras.

to STEVE--- were we not paying attention to the movie at all ?? If you go outside, you pretty much DIE--Remember the group who went out, and the guy tied to the rope? They survived maybe 200 feet--and BANG, hit by whatever monsters--YOU DONT KNOW WHATS OUT THERE !!! Do you honstly think you have the luxury of time to dink around, with THAT many unknowns ? Gee the nearest germ warfare center just MIGHT not be close enough---
By the way, for all you ANti-Republican or Anti Establishmant types--heres another latent theme in the movie-- Trust The Governemt, even thoug it screws up, it still saves the day--nevermind the thousands of unnecessary deaths-- How bout that one, eh ?
  • JackMeHof · 1 year ago
Seems like everyone that read the book, like myself hated the ending! Those that didn't know any different liked the ending. Seems that all S. Kings that have been turned into movies have SUCKED except 'Stand by Me' {book:short story called 'The Body'}If you haven't read the book get it and read it it is still very good.
  • EmpressZorak · 1 year ago
WRONG--those that look a little deeper into the story, read between the lines, true horror fans, and TRUE King fans DO know better !!! Better than someone like yourself who obviously can read a good story, but just doesnt get what it means.. Did you get an F in English composition? Think about this--not all things are happy endings, not all of life is a Friends episode--Its about time that someone made a movie with such dark overtones!! Shawshank Redemption, Misery, and Pet Sematary were all fairly good. I honestly dont think you are a true horro fan--Think !, be introspective, ask questions, dig deeper !!!
  • EmpressZorak · 1 year ago
I also strongly believe that a sequel COULD be made--IF they take the time and do it right-- David could be in it too... The whole movie reminded me a lot of a Koontz book I read called Seize The Night--several similarities, you all ought to check it out !
  • EmpressZorak · 1 year ago
To Jesse and Whaaaat?, and P'd Off, and DrWax------ Listen up youall !!!all of you guys obviously didnt get the movie--. Most of it WAS the cookie cuttered version of most horror flicks--the effects the creatures the blood, the fighting back... it is THE ENDING which is the darting departure which makes this movie so incredibly good!!! True, things could have been done differently. Honestly, what is there to do-- Go out and try to survive--did you MISS the first half of the movie ? They had no food, no real weapons, no real idea what else could be out ther ? Besides, seeing that huge one that shook the SUV would pretty much kill any hope you might have left !!! The whole point is this--Not all situations end well, the hero doesnt always save the day, the good guys dont always win, the boy doesnt always get the girl try PAYING ATTENTION!!! did all of you flunk English Composition ???
  • EmpressZorak · 1 year ago
--OOPS !! DARING departure, not darting-- sorry all !! fumble fingers !!
  • orion49 · 1 year ago
The new ending did not work with the overall story. I had a feeling it wasn't the original ending because it didn't make sense for the characters to behave that way. (SPOILERS AHEAD). The people in the car were the one's so determined to survive and help others, yet in a split second they all agree to commit suicide.... I just don't buy it. Especially the main character killing his son. I still liked the movie, but the last 5 minutes did not fit.
  • Hope In A Hopeless World · 1 year ago
I am still shocked.... kinda like after 'I Am Legend'... I don't know what to say...When they drove off in the car, and the people in the store watched them leave (right before the ending), I was ready to see the store people get destroyed, but instead.. nothing happened! This was a sweet movie and the ending is like much like a PANIC ATTACK! if anyone here had a real panic-attack than you can really feel and get the end... by the way, google the song 'Hope In A Hopeless World'... love it and listen to it.. cheers to all of you.... I am ready for 'THE MIST 2' to come out.... that would be sick!
    GOOD NIGHT

I have been a huge fan of this novella. I even thought of pitching a Blair Witch shaky cam movie idea, based on the boy getting a video camera for his birthday, the day of the storm. He would shoot the various events as they happened and the father would borrow it to use the camera's night vision in the backroom, eventually finding the hanging soldiers. At the end of the film, the camera would be left at the Cafe, nearly out of batteries, and you see the survivors get back in the car and drive away.

The movies ending was shokcing, but felt ill timed. I would have liked more shots of them driving past desolation to give a sense of time and distance. A slow drive by a pile of cars at a gas station crawling with bugs. Cut to the gas meter. Drive by another pile of cars that gets stomped on by the Huge Creature. Cut to a water bottle emptied. Finally the car stops. Exterior shot of it lurching to a halt and just sitting there for a full 20 seconds. Shots of the interior as eyes glance at one another, then finish the movie as it is, but with a longer pause after he falls out of the car and before the military arrives. Have no sound then, he stumbes out into the white. Quick cuts from around him as he screams. His mind collapses and he falls to the ground (possibly unconscious, possibily dead), and then show the military fade in. The treads of the tanks missing him as soldiers walk by... Don't show the mist fading away, just the military arriving, perhaps to save the world, but perhaps not.

So, yeah, the hard fighting characters gave up too quickly and too easily. As a new father, however, I fully realize that killing your own child is aobut as bad as it can get.

The rest of the adaptation was very well done I thought.

I prefeer to, well...kill my son that see how those fucking monsters cut him on pieces, GREAT ENDING, i got shocked and with my hand on my head saying: "OH NO NO..SHIT! NO! DAMN! one of my favorite movie now
