Film School Rejects: Kevin Smith to Handle a Couple of Dicks?

I would be very shocked if this is true, Kevin has said many times on SModcast that he has no interest in directing something that he hasn't written. He tried that situation with the Reaper pilot and decided it was not for him. Then again in this economy it wouldn't be a terrible idea to try to score a large commercial gain.

I saw Smith at a Q&A last week and he mentioned that he "closed the book on chapter one of his film career" and moving on to doing other people's stuff. So this news doesn't shock me. In fact I would say it about time.

If he has indeed "closed a chapter" in his life...then I say go for it. I've enjoyed everything he's done so far, and I look forward to him branching out a bit. I know in past interviews he's mentioned only doing things he's written (for example, he was offered a chance to direct a BSG episode a while back, and turned it down for fear of ruining someone else's stuff), but I think it is about time for a new challenge. If it works, great! If not...I'm sure between him and his friends they can dream up some new, quirky stuff.

I love Kevin Smith the writer , but as far as Kevin Smith the director, he could use some help. I'm sure that it will good as long as they use Tracy Morgan correctly, lately on 30 rock he has become more a cartoon character rather than a real person, and I always thought he was way more funny in the first season. Kevin Smith has lost some of his luster after Jay and Slient Bob Strikes back. Clerks 2 was okay but was more bent on being ranchy than dealing with the story. Kevin Smith needs this movie to be damn good.

Boy, I'm torn by this news. I love Kevin Smith as a writer, and I certainly love moveis he has directed. (All of which have been writen by him of course.)

I'm not convinced of him as a director. Smith would have to take another persons vision and project that in a way that an audience would dig. He certainly has a vision for his own work, but does he have a vision for someone elses?

I think ultimately that any Kevin Smith production is going to turn into a Kevin Smith style movie. I'm just not sure how many writers can produce a script that will fit.

I think its gonna bomb. Kevin Smith is awesome and everything but Im not gonna go spend good money to see two cops tracking down baseball cards. I can pick out a random episode of King Of Queens and itll have a better plot than that. But its all good. Hell bounce back. Hes Kevin Smith one of funniest writers in the business. And if the movie works out -great.
