Film School Rejects: Judge Dredd Will Hit Big Screen…Again…For Some Reason

  • Rhinocerouslip · 11 months ago
To me Judge Dredd is the best ongoing comic strip on the planet. The depth and emotion that writer John Wagner has brought to this one dimensional facist cop is nothing short of staggering as well as a masterpiece in storytelling. And i think its a good collaboration with DNA films. 2000AD ran an adaption of 'A Life Less Ordinary' before the movie came out. Ok not a good movie but it showed that Danny Boyle knows his 2000AD. A one off of 'Shaun of the Dead' story was also entitled 'There's Something About Mary' was also featured in 2000AD prior to the films release, written by Edgar Wright & Simon Pegg (both of whom are huge fans). There are many 2000AD stories that could hold down a movie in the right hands and hold the attention of dumb u.s. audiences whom no know nothing of these well crafted characters.
So i for one as well as many have got a lot of faith in this news.

Thank fucking God Someone British will make a Proper Judge Dredd film.

I predict: it will slap you in your hooker mouth so hard you'll rip your diaper on the way down to the curb.

    Quote me on that.

I liked the first Judge Dredd movie as a sort of mindless awesome excuse for Stallone to flex and kill things. I'm actually excited about a new Judge Dredd movie.

And please, Cole, if Dredd is what convinces you that Hollywood is shit, does that mean you consider all the other remakes intelligent revisits of classic characters?

There are enough good Dredd stories to make several films. Personally I would like to see a CG animated version, especially if it took the style of the best and most underated Dredd artist, Ron Smith.

I'm with you, Robert. The original Dredd film, while seriously flawed, is a pretty good movie. Get rid of Rob Schneider, the fact that Dredd removed his helmet within the first 20 minutes, and a few other things, the movie could've been... maybe not great, but at least better than it was. The ABC Robot was damn cool, and I thought Armand Assante chewed the scenery nicely. Plus the score kicked some serious ass.

Hopefully this new one is more nihilistic, and sans Stallone.

Cole, you failed to mention that Danny Boyle might be attached to this movie. If that is the case, i, for one, am looking forward to this remake a lot. Danny Boyle is a hugely talented and intelligent director, in the mold of Chris Nolan, and im sure he could give the proper sci-fi treatment to Judge Dredd.

"filmmakers can now claim ‘epic failure’ as an excuse to re-envision a character"

    Hulk, anyone?

Dredd is a British comics legend, it is about time that they can deliver his awesomeness to the world in a (hopefully) proper way. I am a long time fan of Dredd print media, I've long been hoping for a Guy Ritchie re-boot, but I'll take another chance on seeing the Judge take on some mutants any damn way that it is presented!

Another good film to be reanimated!! Can't wait for a RoboCop, the Wraith and FLY remakes too!!

I have to go along with the pack here. I went to see the first movie and was impressed with a lot of it and disappointed with some of the movie, simply cut out Rob Schnieder and it is much better.

Gotta admit that I've only ever read the Dredd-Batman crossover, but isn't the fact that Dredd NEVER removes his helmet kind of a running joke through the books? And V proved that there are actors out there who don't need the face time that Stallone obviously demanded. It'll be interesting to see who gets picked to play Dredd...
