    Oh... God, no!
This on really makes me pissed! Fanboy OUTRAGE!

Although I appreciate that it's not touching the real canon, good on them for that

Buffy is nothing without Whedon. Look at the original movie.. it sucked... i think it is cute but it did suck. The television series was a hit.. hollywood needs to step back andlook at themselves. Without Whedon.. Buffy will be nothing.
    And
"But, as expected, it looks like the movie won’t touch on the television canon in any way. Probably a wise move."
That is NOT a wise move at all. completely idiotic.

What I meant was that trying to tie in a film to the already huge canon of the television show (or even trying to match it, especially if they are trying to make the tone way different) would be a mistake.

But the biggest mistake is not including Whedon. Of course.

I love(d) buffy. (well season 1 - 5, 6 and 7 the writers clearly stopped trying). Various reasons for that, known to most any fan.

but yea... seeing a whedonless buffy woudln't interest me. and i do agree that if anything they should go near the tv canon, as it'll (mostly) be fans of the tv show seeing a buffy movie. (odds are someone who hated the show.. NOT gonna see the movie, it's that simple).

also. without whedon and ignoring the tv series i have grave fears that we're gonna get 'buffy.. now with emo wrist slitting action!' (just look at twilight... but not for too long it may cause permanent blindness)

a Whedon-less Buffy is not a Buffy I'm willing to see.

Never watched the TV show. Watched the movie. Enjoyed it. Bring it on. I'm no Whedon fanboy (Firefly was awesome, Dollhouse is OK, didn't really care about his earlier movies) so I don't give two shits if he's involved or not. Hot Cheerleader vampire slayer, please.

My kids are Buffy snobs, they'll be most unhappy. I'm not thrilled either. However, I know we'll all give it a chance. The girls would watch it just to see Willow and Giles again.

After 8 seasons on TV, reruns, and the continuance to comics I think they are going to find that canon for buffy is Joss Whedon's version. Its been a while since it was on TV with new episodes but not so long that everyone has forgotten. If they can find someone to out-write Whedon then awesome but I wouldn't take that bet. You're also going to have to find a cast that can make people forget about the TV cast. This may be easier than out-writing Whedon but I think only slightly. There's a lot of time invested in this story and a lot of fans there. The real question: Why the hell would you alienate a built in core like that?

Agreed. I didn't realize, when this went up, that the film would be far removed from the series. This doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense. Write a script decent enough to lure back the original cast, and the rest takes care of itself.

(My oldest is 14, and both a Twilight AND a Buffy fan. You make a BtVS without Spike, Angel or Giles, you can just forget it. Besides, she's still got that sparkly, dirty English kid.)
