Film School Rejects: Jack Nicholson is ‘Furious’ Over Heath Ledger’s Joker

  • Robert Fure · 2 years ago
Shut up, Jack. His Joker was kind of lame. Definitely wouldn't fit in with the new direction Batman has taken. Ledger needs to be a darker Joker and stick to the comic inspirations.
  • Keith · 2 years ago
I liked Nicholson Joker because it fit the mood of the film, but this just seems a bit like sour grapes. I'm sure that a lot of actors cast into remake type films or tv shows don't care about the original actor, they want to bring their vision to the role. Lump him in with Dirk Benedict now....
  • Maggie Van Ostrand · 2 years ago
One of the many reasons Nicholson rules is that he's honest. Maybe it's because he's been a major star for so many decades that nothing the media can say will hurt him. Whatever, it's refreshing to read that he's "furious" about this.

The prior post may well be correct, about the new direction Batman has taken, but it doesn't change that Nicholson is in a unique (in Hollywood) position to say exactly how he feels.

Betcha Ledger gives him a call now, just to talk about the interview.
  • Zap Rowsdower · 2 years ago
Anyone who says they should have gone to Nicholson in regards the Joker role needs their heads checked. Also, Nicholson and Burton didn't go to Cesar Romero for the '89 flick, now did they? So fuck them.
  • Luis · 2 years ago
Heath kissed a man and looked like he enjoyed it the Joker wouldn't do that
  • cavs2334 · 4 months ago
hey tard ITS CALLED ACTING do you think that heath ledger would have actually killed people in real life just for the sheer enjoyment? answer that question then you can talk.
  • Texan_2112 · 2 years ago
Don't forget that Nicholson's Joker was itself modeled to some extent from the wonderful TV portrayal by Caesar Romero. So there's a kind of tradition. Leger's Joker seems a bit too existential for my taste, when it comes to iconic comic fiction.

did christian bale talk with micheal keaton?
  • Michael · 2 years ago
The Joker needs to be darker.
  • Gerlach · 2 years ago
I'm not sure of how much Nicholson actually know about 'Dark Knight', perhaps he thinks it's more of a sequal than a remake, but I like that he's still so committed to his character and takes it's personal. I would love to see Nicholson cameo in the film, but not as The Joker. I'm convinced that Ledger will prove him self worthy and deliver an unforgettable perfomance. I think Bale and Ledger could have some serious chemistry and will blow our minds. I think it might even surpass the first movie. And now I'm bound for disappointment. Ah well...

yeah im deffiently not a fan of the new kieth ledger joker i think that the character was always supposed be portrayed as like an eccenrtic comical relief character and jack pulled that off well unlike this new one
  • Phil · 1 year ago
Hmm.... Its difficult... i reckon, play it true to the comics, but also, take essence from Nicolson's Joker, and combine it with Ledger's Joker, To make a Hybrid, both really true to the Joker's Character. Apparently, what i've seen, Heathe Ledger's Joker does'nt have that cheesy (yet somehow freaky) grin that Nicholson's has all the time. instead, Ledger's grin is kinda... "painted on". soo... thats not so true to the comics... Joker's grin is supposed to be permanent.... is it not? i can't really remember.... but hey, either way i think Both Jokers are going to be equally good.

    "The Riddler says:

...i think that the character was always supposed be portrayed as like an eccenrtic comical relief character and jack pulled that off well unlike this new one"

Yeah...i'm sure everyone laughed when he beat Robin to within an inch of his life with a crow bar and then blew him up for good measure. Or how about when he crippled Barbera (Batgirl) Gordan?

Do you actually know anything about the character outside of the movies?

I think it's been blown out of proportion, in the interview it says Nicholson laughed as he said he was furious. If he really is serious though then that's just sad :|

Nolan did a good job with Begins, so i'm giving him the benefit of the doubt till it's out and then whine like a bitch if it sucks :p

The original Joker (as in the comic-books) is a psycho drug-fu#$ed (at least acts like it) madman, not a cartoonish ponce who has spinning flowers and wears purple suits like Nicholson.
  • paul · 1 year ago
Jack, get over it your like 2,000 years old.I'm sick of people putting Jack Nicholson
on a pedistal as well as the first Batman on a pedestal like they can't be touched.Don't get me wrong I grew up on the first Batman but this series is for a new generation. When I seen Batman Begins it blew the originals out of the water.I loved the way they did away with the over the top cartoonish style and gave a realistic tone that made you believe that Batman could exist.Burtons version was a classic no doubt but his version was more fantasey oriented.I've seen some of the leaked tralers on livesearch.com and trust me Ledgers vergion of the Joker looks like something serious. He makes Nicloson's version look like Ronald Mcdonald.
  • paul · 1 year ago
Oh yeah by the way Christian Bale is the ultimate Batman hands down!!(Sorry Michael)
  • Naoto Yuki · 1 year ago
Isn't the Joker SUPPOSED to have a certain theatrical perversion to his role? I don't see Heath Ledger as theatrical as Cesar Romaro or Jack Nicholson... he seems to "serious" to be the Joker. The whole idea is that the Joker is a dark but colourful homicidal genius with an unstable emotional essence, which is captured in the Art Gallery dance to Prince or his Waltz atop the Cathedral in Tim Burton's Batman... I think the real argument could be whether Christopher Nolan is even an ounce of what Tim Burton is as a director of a Batman movie... Batman Begins lacked so much that it makes you puke!
  • Paul · 1 year ago
In response to Naoto Yuki's comment who gives a rat's a$$ about The Joker being "theatrical".Personally I think this version of The Joker will fit the direction the new series is going the way it should be.I think people are tired of seeing the same old pie in your face ,whoopie-custion version of the Joker thats been done to death. Nicholson's Joker was too family friendly, Heath's version would scare the piss out of you If you've seen him in a dark alley.

  • Lisa · 1 year ago
Why would Heath speak with him about a whole new Joker. Fuck Jack, that was 20 something years ago, this is a new film and a new Joker. Jack just wants to cash in, like he did back in the day.
  • jacqueline delaura · 1 year ago
The dark knight is more dark than Jack N. charactor, ie looks like heath is the darker new face. brandon lee in the crow ie sinister. Looking forward to the
new movie in the summer of 2008
  • Misia M. · 1 year ago
Naoto said it best: Heath's Joker is too serious to be Joker.

In fact, if it wasn't for Heath's death putting things in perspective, I would be just as furious as Jack. Heck, if I look at things from a merely cinematographic standpoint, I might as well be twice as furious as Jack is. As soon I saw the first picture of The Dark Knight, I was speechless. I was like "p-p-pleeease, gimme a break! What the hell is this? A redneck man's Joker? ". He looks downright offensive. He looks like an average guy using make-up for the first time in his life. In particular, that lips-to-cheek red stripe is a total mess. Once again, it looks like your average gutless guy's miserable attempt at wearing lipstick without looking too gay.

To quote that man Nicholson's Joker used to dance to: sign o' the times.

if jack is serious, he can go fuck himself. "well, i warned him" my ass. jack should be arrested and charged with "being a dickbag."

Mr. Nicholson is just intrested in money i bet a lot of you didn't know he got a percent of the profits from the first movie. Ledger was in it for the role Nicholson is in it for the money...as simple as that. If he doesnt like it let him come after me :P

  • The Title · 1 year ago
When is someone going to mention the title of the movie to rebuke Nicholas the clown? Frank Miller opensTHE DARK KNIGHT comic with a psychopathic Joker doing a mass murder. Miller made the Joker a real criminal and not just a clown who comits crimes... as Jack had protrayed him? It seems Heather (et al) made him a little more crazy.
  • mortyr · 1 year ago
Jack Nicholson is a good actor, but, He like many others are comming to the end of their era. What makes him think everyone wants to see an old, fat balding Joker? He along with Harrison Ford, Clint Eastwood, Sylvetser Stallone etc. are getting too old to be playing these action roles.
  • Jonny B · 1 year ago
Jack is an old fuck who needs to stop living the past. Time for a new generation to step in, out with the old and in with the new. Jack is way too old to replay the Joker and if he would have played his role of the joker again, we would have seen the same shitty remakes just like Die Hard 4, Rocky Balboa, Indiana Jones, and even the worst...Rambo. It's all about the new generation of the Batman series and I give the directors and actors mad props for creating their own vision.
  • Just Some Person · 1 year ago
Naoto Yuki's post is absolutely correct. The Joker is a very theatrical character. I think that Ledger portrayed the character in the script very well, but the character in the script wasn't The Joker. The character in the script was too serious. That combined with the terrible make up and hair styling made The Joker seem like a homeless drag-queen out for revenge. I didn't feel any essence of the comic-Joker throughout the film.

I also agree with Tedronai, I doubt Nicholson would laugh if he were truley furious the film. A little jealous, maybe, but not furious.
  • Brent Hightower · 1 year ago
I was a little surprised to hear this comment by Jack Nicholson. I struck me as being a touch insecure for a man with his established and well justified reputation as an actor. No actor owns a part. There is no actor who can claim The Joker any more than any actor can claim Hamlet, as his sole province on the stage. It is unfortunate because, to me, it represents something that is deeply wrong with America as a whole. For a nation of such undisputed accomplishment we seem to forever be insecure about ourselves, and therefore fixated on competition, when at this juncture of history we so desperately need to rise higher. Come on Jack, have the dignity to share the stage with a young man who was so talented and troubled. It wont detract from your reputation, it will enhance it.
  • annie · 1 year ago
agreed with the commenet above... i've seen some of movie trailers for the dark knight and was really impressed due to all of the action and thrillness involved. That is what Jack's movie lacked... excitement. With ledger's serious yet comical role , the audience becomes scared everytime he makes his way on camera, which is what a villian should do. With this terror also comes some humor, which is the perfect combination. I personally am more of a ledger fan, but jack's version is also a classic.
  • Ryan · 1 year ago
Jack was a good joker, but this mpvie is darker. Heath Ledger had an AMAZING!! performance in this movie. Jack should shut his mouth. Heath ledger will definately win an award for his awesome performance. He did a much better job as joker then Jack Nicholson did. Heath was scarier and Jack's joker looked like he was a clown for little kids. Heath was so good and this movie was SO MUCH BETTER!! then Tim Burton's in '89.
  • Ryan · 1 year ago
I think Naoto Yuki is wrong. I like the way Heath plays the joker.Jacks was not serious enough and Jack is like 90 he wouldn't be able to play the joker anymore. I think Jack should retire. I agree with Daniel Jack is all in it for the money. And Die Hard 4 was an awesome movie. So, was Indy 4. I like the way they made the Joker darker.
  • Todd · 1 year ago
Dear Jack: (like he'll read this...lol)

Wow, Jack um I don't think Heath Ledger or Christopher Nolan needed your help buddy. Don't get me wrong you are one of my favorite actors but in the direction that this movie NEEDED to go I think Heath smoked you out.

    P.S. Move On!
  • Scott · 1 year ago
Jack Nicholson should realize that what Heath did was/is so amazing in the fact that another person took the role of Joker and did just as good a job as he did. That is truly amazing because Jack is the perfect Joker. NOW Heath is ALSO the perfect Joker.

Jack should realize this and the Academy should let Jack be the one to hand out the award for Heath. That would be quite classy.
  • John · 1 year ago
Heath Ledger is best JOKER out of the two. Jack Nicholson was not as good as Ledger.

It's tragic that Heath is gone. I dont see anyone out there including Jack, who can do a better job than Ledger. HL is the best actor for this movie.
  • why so serious? · 1 year ago
Jack nicholson is such a doushbag. in his role as the joker he didnt try to alter his voice and his laugh was terrible, something the joker should be remembered for it was basically just jack nicholson wearing makeup. he brought no electricity to the role and the outfit they have him wearing looked like a gay ringmasters circus attire. Heath actually tried and did one hell of a job portraying the joker as a dark and sadistic killing machine. afterall the joker needs to remembered as an iconic villain not jack nicholson with green hair and painted up like a french whore. for jack to even consider this role at what 70yrs old? who'd he think was playing batman? micheal cain? i doubt theyd be able to digital edit his walker out of every scene. maybe they can cast him as a new villain in the next one.. grandfather time. as for the old batman movies the older they go the queerer they get and u cant get much gayer than the first one. the new remakes are remarkable as blockbuster hits and pretty much sets the new standard for batman moveies
  • Trey · 1 year ago
The way I see it, Jack's Joker is from a past generation. He fitted that Joker perfectly, cause the Batman film then had a different vibe and feel to it. Heath's Joker now blends perfectly well with The Dark Knight. This time around, the Joker was played more justified. You didn't see just some actor, or Heath Ledger, you saw a psychotic, mass-murdering, remorseless human being who had no rules, and wanted to set the world on fire just for his own amusement. You can saw whatever you want about Heath Ledger, but you cannot deny how much effort, heart, emotion, and committment he put into this film to make it come out the way he did.

I'm sorry Jack is "furious". Maybe it's just cause he feels threatened that someone could play a better role than he could. I don't know. Maybe not. But either way, there's only one way to look at it... Jack and Heath have two different styles of acting. And they both justified in both of their Batman movies. But, Jack was then. Heath is now.

Jack Nicholson is a great actor, but he is too old for the role at this point. Heath Ledger's performance is worthy of an academy award. It's unfortunate that Hollywood has always been adverse to giving Best Actor or Best Actress awards to actors playing in action movies, otherwise I'm quite confident he would receive one, albeit posthumously, for his role in The Dark Knight. This fact alone completely justifies the decision to give him the role.
  • Ricardo Dirani · 1 year ago
Burton's 1989 Batman is based on the 60's TV series, which is said to have been a parody of the campness of the Batman golden age comics. Since then Batman has been revisited in great graphic novels such as Allan Moore's The Killing Joke, Frank Miller's Dark Night and (my favorite) Neil Gaiman's Arkhan Azylun. At the same time, the super-heroes genre, which had been forever plagued by awkwardness, has been turned into serious and highly successful action movies such as X-Men. This is the context for Nolan's Dark Night.

One can measure it also by how we remember the actors portraying Batman. Michael Keaton is a joke. He is good for pastiche characters like Beetlejuice. Valk Kilmer had his time and never went much further then being Iceman, or Jim Morrison. George Dr. Dough Ross Clooney... puh lease. Now for Christian Bale all we need to say is "Patrick Bateman" to cast him up on a totally other level. Hell, Bateman was probably the best Joker possible. Just picture him ranting on Phil Collins to Jared Leto's Paul Allen, dancing around him, and then giving the "Try getting a reservation at Dorcia now, you f*ing stupid bastard!" line. It's one of the funniest and freakish scenes in movie history.
  • Nathan Lund · 1 year ago
I've seen The Dark Knight four times, and I've loved every second of it. Anyone criticizing the cinematography should present reason for the vlaue his or her opinion. Many of the camera choices were great, and perfect for the action genre. The script is dynamic, and the audience isn't spoonfed unformation, except for Lucious (Morgan Freeman) Fox's monologue on the utilization of cell phones, and the presented moral dilemma of invading privacy. The Dark Knight is a two-and-a-half-hour movie, which seems normal length; it is engaging, and requires the audience to be thoughtful.

This movie truly raised the standards of not only the Batman series, but of the entire superhero genre.
  • Fred Ingram · 1 year ago
Jack Nicholson was the best Joker ever. Ceasar Romero was also good. I wish that Jack Nicholson had played the role of the Joker in the last film. He would have added so much to the Dark Knight movie. You will never have an actor top Jack as the Joker. He was true to the classic DC comic and had me laughing so hard when he played that role in the Batman movie back in 1989 with Micheal Keaton.
I saw Jack as the Joker when I was about 20 years old and now I see this crap of a movie with that Heath Ledger. I think young people these days have no class to say that Ledger was a better Joker. He was terrible. The Joker is by defination a comedian who is a killer. Jack looked and played the role perfect. He was great. Ledger depressed me and was not humorous in any way. I do not think Ledger even came close to being as good a Joker as Jack. Jack's laugh was superior and I really think Ledger's laugh was awful. I don't even remember Ledger's laugh to be honest. I miss movies that were entertaining and had great actors like Jack.

Jack looks like an ant in front of Ledgers acting as the joker !!!!
Heath Ledger has set new standards of how good a person can act and not just as the joker
    !!!
I wasn't able 2 like any movie after watching Dark Knight.
The Dark Knight was a good movie but it was better only because of Ledgers acting.
