Film School Rejects: Is True Blood the Adult Substitute for Twilight?

  • AngieBatgirl · 1 year ago
I thought True Blood was great. I am a fan of the Sookie Stackhouse series. I can't wait to see some of the other characters.

I haven't read Twilight yet but I have a feeling I won't like it as much as Charlaine Harris' vampire series.
  • Robert Fure · 1 year ago
Adults don't swoon over anything and eat it up blindly like teenage girls. Well, except for Obama apparently. So that means that while we adults may vote a Vampire into office someday in the future, we wont propel True Blood to the upper echelons of CHA-Ching. It is a good show though.
  • CJ · 1 year ago
I think True Blood is not only an "adult" sub for Twilight, but I like how it reaches viewers on an intellectual and contemporary level. I have read the Twilight series and find it entertaining most of the time. For me it was too predictable and I wish the writing were a bit more sophisticated; however I know this is suppose to reach a much younger fan base, so not really too big of a deal. While I have not read, and am unfamiliar with the Sookie Stackhouse series (but I will be looking for it now) I am more excited to see where this story goes. I was very impressed with True Blood and I have recommended the show to a few friends who I think will really enjoy it.

I have read all of the Charlaine Harris books and love them. I would not compare them to the twilight series except for the fact that vampires are present. The rest are your typical night venturing, fang bearing, blood sucking vampires. She is funny though. Extremely funny! Stephenie Meyer is in a world of her own and her books can’t be compared to ANYTHING!
I watched the 1st episode of True Blood and look forward to more!
  • Wray · 1 year ago
Although I haven't read all of Harris' books, I would compare True Blood more to the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton rather than Twilight. I have read the Twilight books and enjoyed them, but the only thing they really have in common with True Blood is the vampires. Twilight is first and foremost a love story. As for True Blood, I am waiting to see how (or if) they bring all of the outside elements in the viral campaign into the show. The show should really be able to stand alone. I know LOST does these things too ("mobisodes", RPGs, "stolen" film clips, etc.) some of which are canon, some not. I'm excited though!
  • Cole Abaius · 1 year ago
On a high-concept level, True Blood and Twilight are the same. Non-vampire dates vampire. It's not totally original, but it's definitely a shared aspect.

Plus, you throw in the idea of vampires being able to survive without killing humans, and the similarities continue.

But for the most part, it just seems like the only "adult" aspect of True Blood is the rampant sex. And the visual layout of how it's presented. Twilight has a ton of sex. Just not very graphic. I'd say the result of that sex is pretty graphic though, and probably more fucked up than most things True Blood can do on screen.
  • celticbikerbabe · 1 year ago
I think it is too early to tell if True Blood is going to be a "must see" every week. So far, I found it entertaining and interesting. Even the opening credits were cool, although in many ways they seemed like a copy of a NIN video..

The casting was fairly well done, the creepy couple who tried to drain Bill in the parking lot really looked like authentic junkie trash. However I thought Anna Paquin just seemed a little too ditzy and vapid. I know the character is supposed to be "innocent", but the frequent blank faced, open mouth stares were a bit much. She did a better job as Rogue.
  • kelsey · 1 year ago
I never read the series, but I can promise you that it's better then this show. The accents are absolutely awful. The fangs look so fake. Twilight pulls you in and makes you think that maybe somewhere, something like this could be true. There is nothing genuine about this show.
  • Angela · 1 year ago
I am an adult and I have read all of the Twilight books and I also tuned in to catch the premiere of Trueblood. I must say I enjoy the Twilight books better. I am very interested to see where Trueblood's story goes, but I have a lot of issues with the show in general, mainly that the actors suddenly and often lose their southern accents (its not subtle) and that some the choices they have made in terms of actors leave much to be desired. The character of Tara is over the top and enough to make me stop watching the show. Meyer's universe to me was intriguing from the very beginning and held my interest til the very end and I am excited for the movie adaptations. I'm not sure Trueblood has the stay power of Sopranos, but we shall see.
  • Lisa · 1 year ago
I read Twilight and liked it, but I did acknowledge that the characters were really flat and the series relied too much on over-the-top romance. True Blood, on the other hand, seems like it will blend romance with interesting characters and plotlines. I like that Sookie is not-quite human vs. Bella who had the really boring "I'm just an ordinary girl" quality. Anyway, the series really shouldn't be watched with comparison to Twilight, since the subject matter of vampires has been around a lot longer than Stephenie Meyers' books.
  • Christin · 4 months ago
It's like comparing Harry Potter to Lord of the Rings. I'm in my early twenties and I just loved the Twilight books and their stories but also I'm really digging True Blood. Okay there is much more blood, violence & sex but that's totally fine with me. You see things on TV you're normally don't see - they push boundaries and I like the accents and stories. It's like a mix of Buffy, Twilight, X-Files and so on. I like both in their own ways and I'm really looking forward to watch'em :).
  • xtascene · 1 year ago
i am going to watch some of the first season of Treublood tonight, and i gotta say, i'm excited. I can't help but wonder, though, why HBO chose Sookie Stackhouse to flesh out rather than Anita Blake. The stuff i've read of Charlaine Harris seems a bit tame compared to LKH, funnier more consistently, but a less fully realized alternate reality. From the commercials, at least, it loos like the HBOers bought the rights to the Stackhouse character and took the color and spirit of Anita. Can't wait to actually see it, tho...!
  • sunshine · 1 year ago
I definitely do not agree with the article. Don't get me wrong, I adore both Twilight and True Blood. True Blood is more of the real world, with sex, blood and gore, whilst Twilight is little more whimsical. Not a subsitute, at all. I think True Blood (The Southern Mysteries series) is akin to Anita Blake verse.
  • Amanda · 1 year ago
As a fan of both the Twilight saga and the Sookie Stackhouse series I really don't find they have much in common other than the vampires and definetly agree with the rest of the comments about True Bloods being more comparable to the Anita Blake series. Which also might be turned in to a movie/tv series.
  • H. · 1 year ago
I can agree. I happened to be reading the 3rd installment of the twilight saga when i caught the show one night. i do find many similarities between them, but i also understand the adult factor of true blood vs. twilight. i do like both, for each their own reasons as well.
  • Joey · 1 year ago
Comparing twilight to true blood? NO chance. I see the little similarities...but first off twilight is like the harry potter of books right now. So all of a sudden a show comes out with a few of the same ideas. Except wayyy more adult. I can see why to get the same audience (more of the young adults over 17). But Twilight is a true love story, its a make u melt and makes u wish you could have that excitement. Pure genious. True blood is enjoyable as a show but i wont take it as serious as twilight. Twilight is a never forget lingers in your mind and this show ..when the series is over its over..
  • Lila Diamondz · 1 year ago
Oh my God first twilight now true blood!! Give me a break, why would they bring out a show about the same genre (vampires) that is dominating half of the world right now. Look twilight is the best, everyone want's true love, some one who can be there for them, protect them, make their heart beat fast. I want to believe that it is not only teenagers or kids that dream of true love, adults want it as well!! And twilight gives all of that. True blood and Twilight are basiclly the same thung but True blood is just (adulty) with sex!! Well, i personally think sex is universal any man can fuck a woman but not every man can make a woman's heart beat more than a jack hammer, that is even better than the adult shit!! Come on twilight all way.
  • Stan · 1 year ago
Oh my Goth!! I read the article, it mentioned that television can go places where books can't, well i don't think so. I mean you can carry the twilight book on the train but you can't carry your whole tv set!! And one of my mates is in africa and they have no telly but at least she has the twilight books to read!! you see even africans know what twilight is, thanks to the book.
  • Twilight Crazy · 1 year ago
I love twilight. I think all of the books are amazing and i am totally obsessed with the. I did
get a chance to see true blood however, and i thought it was amazing too! yes, it was very
racy, and there was alot of nudity, but that is real life with most people...i thought the
whole thing was incredibly sexy, but keep in mind that they are adults. wheater you agree
with Stephenie Meyer not putting in the sexual stuff, it was because they were in high
school. I think there is room for both in our hearts!
  • avery · 1 year ago
okay im a teenage girl almost 16 and i watch alot of vampire shows and i dont think its a adult show, i dont care about the sex its what ball thinks of vampires" he thinks of them as a sexual beast"
  • Laceyg · 1 year ago
I saw True Blood and it does have a few similarities to Twilight.. the main character can read
minds of everyone except her vampire love interest. It's kind of Twilight backwards haha.
But I beg to differ with the article.. I love film and think it's a very cool way to tell a story,
but for me books are the deeper medium. True Blood is very explicit and has a lot of (in my
opinion unnecessary) adult content. I wouldn't really relate it to Twilight other than the
similarities I pointed out above. It's definitely not for the same audience.
ps.. any Moonlight fans? True Blood made me remember how much I miss that show
    (*tear*).
  • Liesel · 1 year ago
I read all four Twilight books and enjoyed them. I watched the first episode of True Blood (second is recorded on my DVR) and also enjoyed it. I want to read the Southern Vampire books now. There is a different target audience for each of the series and they play off her other publicity wise (in my opinion, I would not have watched True Blood if I didn't read the Twilight series last June.) If I read one vampire book (or see a movie, tv, graphic novel, etc) and enjoy it, chances are I will look for another similar series. If I read one and dislike it, depending on the reasons, I can try to find one I enjoy more, or pick up a totally different novel. I am not going as far to say that the vampire genre is a fad at the moment, because I think it has always been there, but I do think it is pretty mainstream. Which isn't a bad thing, because if you like it, it is easier to get.

I see myself as a mature teenager for many reasons and personally, I am not sure if I want to watch "True Blood." From what I have heard the characters do not have as much depth to them and it is substituted with sexual content. That I am not a big fan of. Stephenie Meyer's series are endearing and widely popular because of the characters and the amazing world she created. I'm a tad bit shocked on some parts...The female lead can read minds? I don't know, I am tempted to be the typical hyped-up teenage girl and say they ripped off "Twilight," but then again they most likely did not. Anyway, I will attempt to watch "True Blood" and form my own opinion on the show because, really, it is not fair to hear something from a friend without experiencing it first hand. Though, I can only say I have a feeling it will not be able to compete with "Twilight."
  • Robin · 1 year ago
I enjoy that True Blood is not only dark and sexy but funny, it takes me in all different directions. Also the characters are so different and interesting. I read Twilight and felt it was awful, this is good vampire stuff.
  • kim · 1 year ago
I am NOT a teenage girl and i am a HUGE fan of the twilight series. i'm also a huge fan of true blood....
True blood is definitely the adult version of twilight.....if you like true blood...you will like twilight! they are both wonderful
  • Petra · 1 year ago
Hmmm, True Blood sounds a lot like Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake series....>.>
  • Isolde · 1 year ago
I have seen two episodes of "True Blood" and I think that the show is entertaining although it is cheesy. The two main characters, which are my favorite, (sookie and Bill) remind me of the twilight characters. I love that series even though I am in my mid twenties and in college! If I had to compare the two together . . . I would say that "True blood" has definately shown that there is animalistic lust between the 'innocent' girl and the 'tainted' vampire. The Twilight series offers readers something more than just lust and attraction. it offers love which more dynamic and tangible.
  • Laura · 1 year ago
I read the first two books of Twilight and stopped. I thought that Bella was too pathetic and Edward too dramatic/ perfect. Maybe I'm a cynic but their "perfect love" got old after the first book. I think that so far Sookie and Bill are much better/ more realistic (if that is possible in this situation) characters. I like that Sookie rescues Bill and has that whole handsome/ugly thing going on. I also like that Bill and the vampire are outcasts, stuck in a different time. I think the actor that plays Bill is wonderful!

Anyways besides that there are so many uncanny similarities b/w the book and the show. The fact that Sookie can read mind, and that her true love is the only one she can't? That Sookie has someone more 'right' for her that is incredibly in love w/ her (Jacob). It makes me think that Ms. Meyer was influenced by the books these are based on.

Bottom Line: I love true blood
  • Sara · 1 year ago
I like the raw/realistic attraction that Sookie and Bill have for each other. Their relationship is very adult like. But I also adore the innocent love between Bella and Edward in "Twilight" (even though they remind me of Romeo and Juilet because of their age and apparent obsession with one another . . . that play is still considered to be the greatest love tragedy ever). I definitely think that one cannot compare the two of them together because they are entirely different from each other. Nonetheless, i still like both. And I will continue to see what happens in "True Blood".
  • Mallory · 1 year ago
Well I LOVE twilight!!!! But I just started watching True Blood and I'm completely in LOVE with it too!!!! There are some things that can be compared. The mind reading, vampire and human relationship, possible werewolf relationship (the dog/sookie's boss) maybe i'm just reaching haha. I love True Blood because it's visual. It's sexy and racy, it's fun, and sookie has morals. I don't think she would just sleep with Bill unless she was in love with him. The only thing I so far hate in True Blood are some of the characters names... Sookie and Bill. COME ON. They could of had a way better name. But so far I'm hooked on True Blood. They are both great and you can't really compare. They are on two different levels.
  • Mallory · 1 year ago
"Laura" I COMPLETELY agree with you!!!!
  • Mallory · 1 year ago
meaning i agree that stephenie probably got some ideas from this author. maybe she read the books and had the dream and dreamed up twilight. hahaha just a thought.
  • Alex(female) · 1 year ago
i haven't seen Trueblood yet, but it sounds a lot like Twilight + X-men = Trueblood. is that why Rogue is in this show too? haha...i'm kidding. what a coincedence. i love Twilight!!
  • Kate · 1 year ago
Stephanie Meyer writes romance and writes it well. She is more accurately comparable to an author named Christine Feehan. Charlaine Harris writes in a genre usually called urban fantasy. It bears more resemblance to Buffy. The emphasis is on the characters and the world building, more than the romantic aspects of the story, and the heroine tends to be far less passive than Bella. And for the record, Feehan, Harris--and Buffy!---predate Meyer. (as does Laurell Hamilton) However, Stephanie Meyer says that before writing Twilight she had never read any other vamp fiction. Don't know if she is on record about watching Buffy, though...
  • Bonnie · 1 year ago
I don't think that True Blood is an adult substitute for Twilight. In fact, even though the show came after the Twilight series did, it's actually an adaptation of the Stackhouse books. I happen to have read the Twilight series and when I heard that True Blood was coming out, I decided to give the Stackhouse books a shot.
I also have to say that I agree with Kate. A lot of the things that Stephanie Meyer wrote have been used before, and quite frankly the predictable-ness can be somewhat annoying. Don't get me wrong, I love the Twilight series (well the first 3 because the last one was just awful to me) but I do not think that there is any originality in her work.
  • Bonnie · 1 year ago
by the way mallory, i agree with you too. = )

hey ok i love the twilight saga so much the books are my life.!!!! and i love the show true blood can't wait for the next eposide to come out.!!!!!! yes the two are simialr in some ways...but very diffrent in others.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Melody · 1 year ago
Yeah... True Blood is indeed based on Charlaine Harris's novels, which incidentally came out four years before Twilight. Also? Sookie has a backbone and is able to stand up to humans, vampires, werewolves, etc without her boyfriend running to her rescue. So, no. True Blood is not the adult version of Twilight. Twilight is an adolescent version of the Southern Vampire series, and by association, of True Blood.
  • Vampyre · 1 year ago
I find the comparisson of Twilight to True Blood silly at best. Compare the books against each other if a comparisson must be made.

True Blood is based on a series of books but is very different from those books in many aspects. The biggest difference is the books are told from Sookie's point of view and therefor not as edgy or gritty as the show.

I loved the Sothern Vampire Mysteries by Chairlaine Harris. I also love the True Blood adaptation. I am trying to read Twilight but I'm not liking it all that much. The main reason is I am way outside it's targeted group of readers.

Anyway comparing True Blood with Twilight is kind of like comparing Superman with the Tick. There are some superficial similarities but they are nothing alike.
  • Katasha · 1 year ago
True Blood vs Twilight Series....Plagiarism anybody? True Blood came out way before. And I'm a huge fan of Twilight Series now feel like I wasted my time!
  • Kristi · 1 year ago
I teach high school English and began reading the Twilight series over the summer out of curiousity. My students were so obsessed with the characters and urged me to read the books; I finally did and was hooked. However, ever since True Blood started playing on HBO, I've been reading the Sookie Stackhouse books. I too feel like Twilight may be plagiarism... The author says she never read any vampire books, but the similarities are definitely there...Twilight just seems like a watered down version. I'd say Twilight is a teen substitute for the Southern Vampire Mysteries/True Blood and not the other way around.
  • Emily · 1 year ago
Ok, so here it goes. I have never posted a comment on the web before but this topic is one of great interest to me. I would have to say that Twilight and True Blood do have several points of similarities but are not targeted at the same age groups, demographic, or whatever you want to call it. Twilight focuses on a young adult audience and contains characters that are interesting, but generic in terms of character development. Due to this, it becomes easy for the reader to imagine themselves in the shoes of either Bella or Edward throughout the series. This is not necessarily a bad thing, and is most likely the hook for most of the fan base, but mature readers expect more in terms of the sophistication and complexity in the works they read. Apart from this, True Blood is a plot driven series, where as Twilight is driven by character development (despite how generic), and must maintain a continual build of dilemmas and action. You also have to consider that with T.V. the audience is a passive by standard in terms of how the storyline develops. Everything is handed to you on the tube. When it comes to reading, the audience is always active in creating and immersing themselves in the world which the story takes place. I would say that the preference of most people really depends on how, and in what form, you want the story told. I personally love both series equally and I am now interested in checking out the Chairlaine Harris books. Oh, and one more random thought, I love the opening to True Blood. Watching this show is like taking the sexuality and crazy circumstances of nip tuck and meshing it with the opening of Dexter. I know that sounds odd, but those two shows came to mind as soon as I watched the first episode.
  • Romney · 1 year ago
Well, I have read the Twilight series and I fell in love with it. I am...okay...over 35 but I still fell in love with the books...and well, Edward ha ha. I have also watched True Blood (religously, thank you), but I cannot compare the two. Twilight is an innocent love story while True Blood, well, isn't. One is HBO, and one is the teen channel. There is a HUGE difference between the two. Basically, one leaves everything to the imagination....and the other leaves NOTHING to the imagination. I guess it is what you are looking for.

Don't get me wrong, I really like True Blood.....but I love Twilight too. I think I need to be "turned". : )
  • Romney · 1 year ago
The Twilight books are not plagiarism, and that is for sure. If anyone has read any Hamilton, Harris, etc. books - they all have the same premise. I have seen the similarities. There is nothing that is "copied". The books are based on folklore.....all of them. It just depends on what appeals to each of us and how we relate. Vampire vs. werewolf has been around for a long time - would you say that the movie Underworld also used someone else's idea? I think not.

There is no reason to attack Meyer. She just wrote a story that kids could read. I happen to be WAY past "teen" years - but the story appeals to me just the same. That is the sign of a great writer....appealing to everyone. Not just teens, but adults as well.

OK, I have put my soapbox away now.

  • Kashmira · 1 year ago
I have read all the Twilight books and saw the move. And i have seen all the true blood shows on HBO. but i havent read the series. To me, they are totally two different stories that just happen to have some similarites. In my opinion Twilight is the better of the two. Its more about the romance and love between two people than the sex. But i wouldnt say true blood was bad. Neither of them are the same. Nobody should compare either of the book series either. This was Stephanie Meyers first book and series ever. So its going to sound not as intelligent as the Stackhouse series. But for Meyers first book series. I loved them.

So to sum it all up.

Both good series. not needing to be compared. different stories with different characters. and people shouldnt get mad when people say one is better than the other. its all a matter of opinion.

firstly Ithink that the vampire in trueblood are way different than in twilight
  • Paul Primera · 10 months ago
While it's futile to argue with the commercial success of Twilight (& my wife loves the story), it's disappointing to me to sell the vampire mythos for the price of a caricature by using it only as a vehicle for romance. True Blood seems clearly more of a tapistry for grown ups. Nevertheless, I think the mythos considered at a somewhat deeper level still begs for yet a smarter vision for vampire mythos... consider: www.InParisDark.com.

True Blood isn't an adult substitute for Twilight. Twilight is a tweenie substitute for True Blood. The books True Blood is based off of were published a good four years before the first Twilight, and Twilight is a shameless, watered down rip-off. Get it right.
  • Laura · 3 months ago
To be honest, True Blood on HBO came out before Twilight opened in theaters. True Blood I believe aired in June of 2008 (correct me if I'm wrong) whereas Twilight opened in theaters in November 2008. In both ways (books and media) True Blood had it first. So yeah, I don't think True Blood is a sub for Twilight. n_n
