Film School Rejects: In Regards to Your Film, ‘I Love You, Beth Cooper’

I haven't seen this movie, but I agree with you 100%.

    Cole,

I think you missed the point of the movie. This movie is for 13 and 14 year old kids. I have not even seen a preview for this movie.. therefore they are probably only shown on the Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. Ack the 14 year old girl what she thought of the movie when she walks out... i bet she liked it. And for the record I only read the first paragraph of your letter.

Oh you. I missed you like the sun misses the flower in winter.

And, as a personal anecdote and answer to your theory. You're wrong. I was in a theater where 4 teenagers walked out, and the ones that stayed were really pissed walking out. It's a dumb movie - teenagers shouldn't even waste their time on this one.

Amen! I knew somebody had to write the gospel. Could not agree with you more. To be honest, I was so close to violating the 'no cell phone' policy in the theater to call a suicide hotline, but fortunately the movie ended just in time. Good analysis. Well written, well thought out.

Wow, a review of a teen comedy from Dr. Cole Abaius... oy! Seriously! You're arguments come off as bitchy and whiney rather than thoughtful and credible. You're complaining about cliche's? Give me a break! Forget the cliches, the question is do you care about the characters? I did. The movie didn't go down hill after Denis's announcement as you think. That was just the beginning of a journey of self discovery for both the main characters. Sure it was done in an outrageous and silly way but there's many ways to tell a story. Chris Columbus went the comedic route and there were plenty of great laughs and clever humor. Also, casting was great. Maybe it's just personal taste but Megan Fox is not that sexy. Hayden is so much hotter than Fox, she can act, can be funny and endearing.

Why did you care about the characters? Denis is fairly decent, although the actor that plays him is pretty average overall anyway. But I'm curious as to why you gave more than a shit about Beth Cooper. What personal discoveries are made? How do the characters change? What did you laugh at?

Also - I'm highly suspect when someone can see cliches for what they are and care about characters.

I LOVE teen comedies. This one just isn't funny. Or interesting.

I love your open letters. They're funny AND accurate! The best of both worlds.

Damn boy. You get your PhD in ranting?

I haven't seen the movie, and I'll probably agree with you, save one thing:

    Hayden is fucking smoking hot.

    That is all.

Ohmigod. Really? You really legitimately think this is worth this whiny rant? Get a job you tool.

Well...I've read the book this movie is based off of, and although I haven't seen the movie (and won't), I agree with you 100%. I put down the book with some of the same questions in my head as you had walking out of the theater. Needless to say, when I saw a movie was to made out of it, I (and not for the first time) seriously questioned the crap that Hollywood-types think will make good movies.
