Film School Rejects: Harry Potter 6 International Trailer Brings About Darkness

  • Isamu · 8 months ago
I haven’t seen any of the Harry Potter films because I never was a fan of it but this new film now makes me want to watch all of the Harry Potter movies for the first time in my life and maybe read the books of each movie there’re based on for the first time in my life too!

    Read the books first.

No, don't - trust me, if you read the book first, the movies will likely piss you off. I'm a fan of both but I can tell you, the change in director and the tendency to half-ass the subplots has me cringing over this movie. I'll still see it... every trailer I watch makes me more excited to see it, but I have to wonder just what they've left out THIS time.

The time will fly by while reading all things Potter. If you don't read the book, some of the things that happen in the movie will have you scratching your head wondering what did I miss. Many times I called in sick so I could finish the book. I took the deaths really hard, I could not imagine how the young readers were dealing with it. It will be a long time before another story comes along that captures the imagination and make you feel as though you are part of the story. I bought the collectors editions that have additional commentary by JK. Take your time and read the books, you will not be disappointed.

"some of the things that happen in the movie will have you scratching your head wondering what did I miss."
This is especially obvious in the 3rd & 5th movies, but #4 does this too. My DH hasn't read the books so he points this stuff out to me.

"Many times I called in sick so I could finish the book."
I almost did this myself, but I got lucky - book #7 hit shelves just before my 37th b-day, so I demanded it as a present. Took my b-day off and read it in 22 hours, then immediately read the entire series through again. lol

"I took the deaths really hard, I could not imagine how the young readers were dealing with it."
Me too... the one at the end of #6 (I won't say who to avoid spoilers) had me in tears. So did a few at the opening of #7. But the kick-in-the-gut were the last few to die at the end of #7. More tears...

The last book was timed perfectly. I too stayed up and devoured the book. And then read it again a month later, savoring every page because I knew it was the end ;-(.

interesting....when did Gandalf decide to no longer search for treasure and instead teach children how to become wizards...i'm so confused

All will be revealed! Each person picked to play these characters in my opinion were perfectly cast. I perosnally do not like Ralph Fiennes acting, therefore I do not like him in this role. I would have picked someone more menacing. Even the young actor who played Tom Marvolo Riddle was a nasty little bugger.

I would've loved to have seen Christian Coulson play teenage Tom again, but of course he's too old now. He was just so wonderfully creepy!

What a great trailer. I hope Rickman gets a lot of screen time.
  • Isamu · 8 months ago
Alright I will do that first because it is better to read the books they are based on first.
  • jack2jack · 8 months ago
Usually it is not, however the last couple of directors have forgotten that these are childrens stories that we adults just happen to enjoy. Therefore, the last two movies I walked out on.
  • dragonmum · 8 months ago
Yeah I nearly did out of #5... hopefully the direction's gotten better, because it seemed to me in that one that the kids completely forgot how to act!

If ever you don't understand anything Potter, the Leaky Cauldron website will have more back ground information to catch you up to speed.

Sometimes I forget how great the story in these books really is. That trailer brought it back for me nicely, I think I'll set to work re-reading before the next movie comes out, so all the details are fresh in my mind.

They'd better do a *really* nice 8 movie set when all these come out on DVD/Blu-ray!

Seriously, don't read it before watching the movie. I read a bit on a UK site - can't remember the link right now - where some British fans were given a screening of this movie, and they flat out said any fan of the books will be upset over the two characters and the subplots who've been completely removed - they didn't say who or what, so I guess we'll see. :/
  • Kangaroo Be Stoned · 8 months ago
And what you read was false because the film has not been screened in the UK yet. I believe you read that from the rag known as "The Sun".
  • dragonmum · 8 months ago
Yeah that sounds right... oh this is such a relief, I was hoping that wasn't true!

It will be interesting to see the finished product. They picked this director because of his ability to handle the intense scenes in this last book. I agreed that the last book should have been split into two movies. I still have found memories of how Chris Columbus directed the first two movies. He asked his daughter who was 8 or 9 at the time about certain scenes he wanted to cut, however she told him why he could not. Smart move on his part for listening to her.

This is another of those movies where the music alone sends chills down my spine. Beautiful orchestrations.

They should make more books of Harry Potter because they are starting to look good after I first finish reading the first chapter!

When you finish the series you will see why JK finished the books in the manner she did. She could not bear for someone to come along and distroy her work. I happen to agree with her. People looking to cash in on all things Potter would ruin the story. But she has not ruled out going back to Hogwarts. I hope she finds something inspirational to add to what she has already accomplished. Not bad for a woman on welfare who was flat broke. Can you imagine carrying around these books on the papers had them on for years. Facing rejection after rejection. Even her high school teahcer tried to get her to go in another direction when she was first forming her ideas for the books. Tragic how the educational system can squash some peoples imaginative capabilities while not doing enough to curtail the distructive ones. Which of course is every success story!

And since she stuck to her gut, she did some excellent work, and now she's got enough money to never have to work again... if only I could manage that! lol

This is what I don't like about Potter fans. A lot are purists when it comes to film adaptations. Why not do what I do and not compare the books to the films? Film is a completely different medium and sometimes things in novels need to be cut from films.
  • dragonmum · 8 months ago
You're right, it is a completely different medium, and as a fan of both, watching the movie first will make the book much more enjoyable. It's always been my experience that books just do not translate to film well, so why spoil the movie when you can just read the book afterwards to see what the movie left out? If you read the book first, you'll be unconsciously expecting to see certain people or events in the movie that, like you said, are necessarily cut. And you leave the movie disappointed that the particular character you liked so much in the book didn't get any movie time. There's no point in doing that to yourself if you can avoid it.

Jackie - Ok you know that scene in the trailers that we all said wasn't in the book? Where the Burrow was set on fire? I finally got a chance to show this trailer to my 11yo, and she pointed out the ladder at the back of the building - which pretty much clinches it: it's not the Burrow, it's Hagrid's hut. I can't believe I didn't spot it before, but every other trailer showed this as a top-down view. I think she's right, and that scene IS in the book. Leave it to a kid to point out what us adults missed! lol
