the way he provides balance to someone like superman. there are several great stories about the trust between them. how superman gave batman a piece of kryptonite incase he ever lost control. the way he interacts with the justice league. he's a member, but hardly there and generally creeps many of them out.
the OMAC crisis was a terrific example of this.
as interesting as batman is on his own, i think that's what we expect of him. his "bat-family" and the way he deals with them is awesome. as an example of that, i like the War Games story from a few years ago. reconciling the return of jason todd, nightwing's excessive force, the loss of tim drake as robin and then the death of the spolier was amazing. his city was burning, the police turned against him and his allies divided, he still solidered on as the beacon of hope in gotham. that's what makes him interesting.
Also he's a bit like Iron Man(whom we all love) but a darker version. like our inner bad guy who gets the chance to kick some serious ass...dressed as a bat of course. I reckon my inner bad guy is a penguin...cant get better than a pengoo bit*h slap
Sure, it doesn't make any sense that the FBI, CIA or NSA hasn't seized control of his wealth, burned down his mansion and thrown him in prison. But we don't WANT that story. We want the guy that gets away with it... as long as "it" is the right move. And then, by "right move", of course, I mean the choice we'd like to be able to make.
Let's face it, if we thought for a second we could, we would beat the crap out of that guy robbing the gas station, or casterate the pedophile. Batman kicks the bad guy's ass. No red tape, no restraint... just "This guy is bad and deserves an ass-whooping". Yea, it's believable that a man could feel that way. And it's believable that he would go through with it.
Not to mention... Batman's toughest fight is with himself. We can all feel that one.
Stay strong my people....stay strong. For yourselfs and for Gotham. Well mostly for yourselves as I am going on vacation in a few weeks to Japan and this city will be RIPE for the picking come crime time.
Wait...how many people read this? Eh...maybe I should have never said the part about the vacation....heh..
As for the 'why' in the Dark Knight, well I'd say that it is pretty primitive: he is one of us. A human being. A man driven with dark intentions; and like Jeph Loeb's dialogue exchange between Supes and Bats, deep down we all know that Batman isn't necessarily a 'good' person who would smile at the kid after saving him. No, he isn't driven by the notion of 'With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility' (No offense Stan, but I'm comparing the heroes here, not writing credibility; you're still the Man). Batman is the sort of person who makes that power about him and resumes the responsibility; it isn't a moral lesson his parents taught him, but something the cruel and dark elements of the world forced him to learn: emphasis on the word 'dark' Okay so i sound like a rip-off, but the truth is simple; Batman's a figure who faces the same things we all know exists in the shadows; he's the one who's in street level with the rest of the human race showing us what we could do if we too are driven. Then there're the terrifying things about him that mirrors not only who we are, but what we know could happen to any human being surrounding us. Having said that, there has also been a great deal of popularity with the not-so-dark Knight back from the 60s; and i think that the reason his popularity has endured for so long is not because of his gadgets, or any of the superficial stuff of heroism and comical fantasy, but the realism that roots itself deep within the character's role: in a world where we know that the challenges he must face are real and can happen to any one of us. Be it an orphaned, disfigured Cobblepot from Burton's masterpiece, the psychologically challenged misfits in Arkham Asylum, the corrupt officials from Year One, the gangsters or even the catastrophic calamities in No Mans Land... when the Dark Knight, a symbol of hope in a hopeless world, had to battle against desperation.
So Bats, here's me telling the rest of these board members something about what we should be doing; after contacting Mr. Fox for another dozen sky-hooks.... "Lets put a smile on that face!" HeHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA
-RIP Heath Ledger, You have proven me wrong.
As a self-confessed Batman-oholic, (all my things are Batmannized), you have just made my day good sirs. A very good read, with none of those stupid banters about how this superhero is better or that. I mean, i'm not even sure if you guys have been long time fans of The Caped Crusader, but you really hit it with your comments.
I keep telling my friends, Batman is human. He's human. He CAN be killed. one lucky shot by a punk is all it takes. but he still sacrifices his life EVERY DAMN DAY to make the world a better place.
Superman said it best in the BATMAN/SUPERMAN comics of recent publication; Here's Bruce Wayne, with him, devoid of fear, just amazed at the man, wondering if he was human, would he be brave enough to be like Batman?
Not only is Batman believable, he is an awesome inspiration. I use his training to inspire my workouts. I use his studying in all my reading. Heck, i sometimes even use his driving when i'm driving my car! The ultimate bad-ass. The ultimate hero.
The Greatest (Super) Hero of ALL-TIME.
because he can kick superman's ass anytime
he is the first mortal man to kiss diana (wonderwoman)
he certainly more popular than god himself
