Film School Rejects: Goku? Oozaru? Or Just Someone’s ‘Dragonball’ Halloween Costume?

  • curt · 1 year ago
I had a strict policy not to see movies that are about balls flying into people's faces. Then I saw Dodgeball and had to stop that policy. What could go wrong?

Wow. And here I thought it couldnt get any lamer than "Double Dragon" and "Super Mario Bros".

In the anime series, Goku's Oozaru form resembles a giant gorilla not unlike King Kong. A fan of the old animated show would tell you that whatever that thing is supposed to be in the live-action flick is ridiculously inaccurate and a slap in the face of millions of die-hard DBZ followers everywhere.

And to answer your question, Rob Hunter: It is NOT a good thing.

Remember that time Piccolo wasn't green?

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! All around! What they are doing is an abortion to a beloved anime and I am tired of Hollywood and other film studios doing this type of crud! I refuse to see this movie and do not recommend it to anyone who, like myself, is an actual fan of the DBZ or who isn't and gets talked into support this joke of a film by some lame or their kids who don't know better.
  • BigWord · 1 year ago
& whatever that stupid looking monster is supposed to be, it is most definitely NOT Goku's "beast form". So BOOOOOOOOOOOO again!!!
  • Mikey · 1 year ago
I think they should do us a favor and stop production altogether. They always manage to make the movie look lamer than it already was.

When I look at the picture all I see is Goku mid transformation, so if you were to make that thing much bigger and color it in, it has the potential to be a really good looking monster. Dragonball is about a bunch of good guys loving each other and asking bad guys not to hurt anyone for 20 episodes before they finally have to cut them in half. It's perhaps silliest to expect this movie to ignore that heartwarming story premise, and from what I've seen and heard the identities of the characters are all well represented. Add in the awesome special effects and you have Dragonball.

okay its unpainted, its uncomplete, and when its head turns why the hell would it look
rubbery, its a model theyll make a CGI version for movie, and the movie cant be to dragon
ball or it would turn out really gay, magine someone with realistic goku hai or a deep green
person it all looks gay so they had to modifie a few things

Notice the fact that he's still wearing his uniform. That shows that this is Goku at the beginning of his transformation. Otherwise he would be gigantic, CG, and would have already ripped his clothing. This is a transitional form, obviously.

this movie looks totally retarded. I will not see it, as it is an insult to my enjoyment of the DBZ series and an insult to my culture as a Japanese. Don't even bother finishing the movie, as I always feel, if you are not going to do something right, do not even do anything at all.

I think the people that see this and say it's incomplete are missing the point completely. This movie should never, EVER have gotten as far as it has. I don't understand why large film studios are trying to ruin my childhood. This was my favorite show when I was younger, and I remember rushing home to watch it. Now this. It's a disgrace, and I honestly do not understand why it is necessary to make it into a movie. It was a great show, even if it was a little drawn out. That doesn't mean you have to turn it into a movie. Why can't people just be happy with great work? They have to keep sucking the fun out of things until there is none left. I don't care how awsome it looks when it's finished it won't make it a good movie.

as somebody who works in concept art I can tell you right now that the excuse you've just given isn't correct. It is painted and is finished, look at it. They obviously already went through the art phase and its already wearing the outfit on top of that. Do you think they'll dress him up and then apply the makeup and paint on set? First of all the only reason they look different is because some asshole who probably doesnt know shit about dragonball is in charge of this and just has to make things look "cool"... regardless of what fans think. The challenge of the artist is to bring the characters to life while staying true and make them work in the real world annnnnndddd they havent done that. Do you remember teenage mutant ninja turtles? the old movies? That was a successful transfer that stayed true. This is retarded.

Not everything is CGI, this is far too developed to just go and scrap it for a computer based rendering. They would sketch it, they make a clay version, THEN make the cgi. not make a life size model first.
The whole green is gay thing... have you heard of hellboy? big red guy, ever seen the films? was he not cool or realistic in the modern setting?

the pic is of mid transformation, goku does turn full oozaru in the movie, except he's not 30 feet tall more like 7 or 8 but he does fully transform, dont worry about it, its not perfect, given hes not 30 feet tall, but it still looks just like the cartoon oozaru, pointed snout and all, altho i dont think he has a tail tho. granted tho cant technically call oozaru the great ape seeing as apes dont have tails lol but for it being a live action movie i was surprised they put oozaru in at all, and it does fit. i was more pissed off piccolo's antenna are sunken into his head not hanging out front. lol and no krillin! but shenlon is in there and looks exactly like it. only other gripe is roshi isn't bald. beyond that i expected worse.

T-T i know for a fact that my childhood will be ruined when this comes out. Bulmas hair is not shortand not blue wtf I mean if your going to make a movie of an anime I think that you should; A:watch the anime so that you get the jist of what there is to follow with characters and how they look. B: Don't piss off die hard DBZ fans with a movie that could really suck. and i guess C: When it comes down to it LEAVE ANIME ALONE COMPLETELY! If it was an anime it's anime for a reason.
  • Xorcyst · 7 months ago
yea but this hasbeen mentioned to many before, this movie is based off of DRAGONBALL not DBZ this comes before anything in dbz, maybe you should go check out dragonball and you'll see it more closely resembles that than what you think, i like all dragonabll incarnations and i thought it's not bad for the first time anime has been adapted to live action. gotta start somehwere.
  • omniblast · 7 months ago
yeah this movie wasn't as bad as people made it out to be, the special effects were great, the fights were good. And the fights and effects will continue to get better as their powers progress. That is why I am hoping for a few sequels. The only real thing that I had against the movie, was Goku's crush on Chi Chi. They should not have changed Goku's personality as much as they did. But all in all I thought it was entertaining. Sure it wasn't exactly like the anime, but why would we want it to be exactly the same.
