"As a revenge film, there aren’t enough cathartic thrills and kills, and as a drama there’s too much pointless behavior that prevents you from getting truly invested in the characters."

This is an interesting summary. It's not a conventional revenge movie, where there might be three pretty gruesome hollywood-esque setup killings - this movie is much more subtle than that (like Batman's Lamborghini). You say the movie can't be a drama because of pointless behaviour - something I don't really remember standing out for me on this movie - but it has been a while since I've seen it. Also, I suppose it can't be a drama 'coz of the twist... Anyway, I enjoyed it (and it was filmed relatively close to me) and might watch it again soon - 8/10.

"Shane Meadows, who per IMDB has directed several films I’ve never heard of before and probably won’t be seeking out on the basis of this movie alone."

I would like you to rethink that statement and go out, find and watch This Is England. I remember this movie being released, but I didn't see it because it didn't really appeal to me. However, it was on Film4 (a British movie channel) and I watched it... wow. It was brilliant. However, it may not have an audience outside of the UK, which is a shame but it's a very interesting look at the right-wing BNP and skin-head society - 9/10.

To me, This is England was a huge disappointment. Meadows' best film is by far 'A Room for Romeo Brass' - it also stars Paddy Considine and one of the actors in This is England, Andrew Shim.
