Film School Rejects: First Look: Ray Stevenson in ‘Punisher: War Zone’

  • Steve · 1 year ago
Yes, especially since the first Punisher was so spectacularly good that it requires a sequel. And frankly, Stevenson looks entirely too much like Steven Seagal for my tastes.
  • Neil Miller · 1 year ago
Steve -- I was thinking the same thing. At first I thought wait, is that Steven Seagal? And that is never good. Especially if you want people to take your movie seriously.
  • Tommy · 1 year ago
I agree with both of you. That guy looks WAY too much like Segal, I loved the old PUnisher movie, the guy was awesome as Castle
  • Dean · 1 year ago
Shame that this is the first picture they chose to release, because Stevenson looks absolutely nothing like Seagal, but I have to agree that this picture gives that vibe. I thought Stevenson was fantastic in Rome, so I'm looking forward to much better pictures.
  • Robert Fure · 1 year ago
It's a horrible picture to start with. Number one, he looks a bit like Seagal like everyone said, also he looks plastic, like the Ronnie mask in "The Tripper." Also, the gun was a weak-poop looking Grenade launcher attached to it. Totally doesn't look as cool as the M203.

Thomas Jane was a great Frank Castle and Punisher. The Punisher movie was/is way under rated. I really like it. It was a great set up movie. The sequel with Jane was supposed to be dark and would have kicked ass.

Now that Jane left because he didn't like where the script was going, who knows. Poor image. Jane was awesome. Looking forward to this movie less and less. (And I'm someone who wanted a sequel)
  • bugs · 1 year ago
Am I the only one who thought The first Punisher sucked? It sucked, c'mon!
I think Thomas Jane is an excellent actor but he's no Frank Castle. Lundgren was much better but he was no Punisher either. Seagal would have made a TERRIFIC Punisher. Just don't give him any lines and presto!
Any new Punisher movie will be better than the last one. I was ASHAMED to call myself a Punisher fan after that. Bad plot, bad direction, bad script. It was a disgrace. I look back on 86 and I say, THAT movie wasn't bad.
    Information,Surveillance,Planning,Punishment. That's it. That's Castle.
I don't want an introspective character giving us an exposé on our society. I want a ruthless, remorseless and determined SOCIOPATH strategically exacting brutal and relentless punishment on criminals. Why criminals? Because he hates them. Period. That's his psychosis. That's the exposé.
Hopefully, Stevenson will manage. So far, his look is better than Jane's. My opinion.
    Peace.

First thing is first. This film is not a sequel. The only thing it has to do with the other 2 movies is the main character. Read the interviews with the director. As far as not having Tom Jane return as Frank Castle/Punisher I was upset at first, but then remembered how mad I was when I found out he was going to be the Punisher in the last one because he really did not have the size or look. After seeing him as the Punisher I was thrilled and could not imagine someone taking over. Then I seen pics of Ray Stevenson. This man is the Punisher. Give the man a chance, I know he looks like Steven Seagal when you look at the way he is squinting his eyes with his face hidden behind the rifle, but unlike Steven Seagal, Ray Stevenson can open his eyes all the way up again when he’s done shooting. Sorry mister Seagal.
The launcher on the rifle is seen on a lot of Heckler and Koch weapons (I think Ray is holding a HK 416 and not a M4).

i wanted a sequal so bad but now not so much because Jane is the true punisher in my heart nowon else.

The Jane Punisher was awful. A B-Film, at best.
Suddenly, the death of his wife and kids wasn't enough to illustrate the depth of his loss. They had to wipe out his ENTIRE family (about 50, what?), conveniently gathered together, hours after their death certficates were issued, to have that particular ramification impressed upon us with the pathos that it desrves. "Oh, so he wants to kill them all, ooohhhhhh, I didn't get that." Movie was 5 minutes old and I was out of it.
Piecieng scenes together straight out of the comics while depriving us of the IMPACT of those scenes. Brilliant. The lollipop scene. The Heck Thornton scene. His neighbors. The Russian fight! It's like they purposefully set out to mangle that character by crafting crappy rip-offs. Who was Travolta supposed TO BE, anyway? Oh yeah, the signed actor to sell the concept to the producers.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Punisher supposed to scare the hell out of people? Thomas Jane couldn't scare a kitten. He's good against sharks, though, I'll give him that. How did he get the part? By auditioning? Hah! By being the only FACE anyone recognized.
I look at the picture up top and yeah, the guy does look like Seagal.
But he also looks like The Punisher. Anyone says Jane did has to give me the name of their oculist.
I look forward to the film as look forward to everything the Punisher does.
I am confident this movie won't be as awful as the previous one(s).
  • Marshall B · 1 year ago
If you read the comic book especially the Welcome Back Frank Series this new guy looks much more like the Punisher then Thomas Jane. I thought Thomas Jane did a good job but I am excited to see how this movie is.
  • JamesBond007 · 1 year ago
I really liked Thomas Jane in the last one, and I wanted him to come back so BAD!!!! But Ray Stevenson does look way more like Frank Castle then Tom Jane does, and he did an excellent job in King Arthur, so i'm looking forward for this movie. One last thing, I saw the trailer however, and the script isn't that great in my opinion, but you'll have to see for yourself.
  • tsagabbar · 1 year ago
I for one would've loved to see Steven Seagal as the Punisher.

But even more so: Henry Rollins :-)
  • Paul · 1 year ago
Jane didn't have the look as The Punisher to me.Acting wise he did a good job but he was no where near as muscular or tall enough for the part.In some parts of the movie I felt he was trying too hard to be a hard ass that wasn't believable.

Not a Seagal-look-a-like in the set

Ray Stevenson will be a great Punisher, Don't mid this picture, it's a bad one and yeah he looks a little like Seagal in it. I sae some othe pictures of Stevenson as Punisher and he looks badass, just like hime. Jane was terrible, I have higher hopes for this new movie.
  • Eldospinks · 1 year ago
I think this picture makes Ray look like Gary Numan.

    Now I'm showing my age.
  • wolfebd316 · 1 year ago
I'm really looking forward to this new Punisher film, although I loved the Thomas Jane Punisher (who I think should be in the 4th Spider-Man film), It's sad he's not returning, but we as Marvel fans have to adapt to change. Ray has a great likeness of the Tim Bradstreet Punisher, I trust there will be better photos posted soon because I'm dying to see what Jigsaw si going to look like. I guess what I'm saying is "Give him a chance, I'm pretty sure he'll give us a bang for our buck!"

    Take care.

P.S. Punisher got his start in the Spider-Man. series
  • Tony · 1 year ago
So did the Power Pack, Wolfe. You want them in Spider-Man 5? The Spidey movies are for the whole family, Punisher is for us freaks. We like or social conscience served pulping raw at 200 rounds a minute. We like are Justice delivered with a muzzle-flash.
They both protect the innocent and wear a costume but they don't have anything else to really talk about.
Somehow, I don't see Spidey swearing and wading in blood. Or Castle carrying a little girl and shooting people in the shoulder. I want Castle!
Ray Stevenson sure looks like he could pull it off.

ALEXANDER NEVSKY could be the best actor fot The Punisher role. Nevsky looks like the Timothy Bradstreet comics PUNISHER.
  • Dave · 1 year ago
To all you who think Jane was not a good pick for the punisher, fooey on you. Jane was awesome because he was able to play the father and husband figure that Dalph(or however you spell it "I must break you")never could because of his limited range. I don't know much about stevenson as an actor, but I gotta say that I hate the whole greasey mobster looking punisher. He was a cop, not a hood. Cops look normal not like they work at a dock or are part of some type of union enforcer group. Jane looked like a normal person that is why he should be the Punisher and always will in my mind, he is not a super hero, he is just a man,............man.
  • Christian S · 1 year ago
He looks like Segal and i loved Tom Jane as The Punisher and the movie was so great. I looking forward less and less on this movie, like someone else said in here.
  • Tony · 1 year ago
Uh Dave? Was he a cop? That's Ultimate Universe, no? Castle was a Marine, back from the war. I don't think he was a cop in the Marvel Universe. Secondly, he's Italian (Castiglione); his hair is supposed to be that way.
Thirdly and most importantly, though your devotion to Jane is commendable, he's no Frank Castle. Alone in a room with him, I wouldn't be afraid of him. Can't say as much about Dolph.
Family figure? Family figure??? Are you kidding me? This isn't Strawberry Shortcake, Dave, this is The Punisher! Find the bad guys; torture them to find out where their bosses are and then execute everybody in various inhumane manner. That's what I want from Castle. Hey, I want family figures; I watch Oprah.
Thomas Jane is a good actor, got nice presence, sure, but if he's the Punisher then Topher Grace should play Venom...waitaminnit...Anyway, you see my point.
Right off the bat, Stevenson's got a much better look.
Perhaps you can direct me to Punisher series that shows the contrary?
No? Then I'll say it again: The Jane Punisher was aawwwwful! Dolph's was better.
But you know what Jane would be good in? A Strawberry Shortcake movie. For real; I'd go see it!
  • brody · 1 year ago
The first Punisher was not very good in my opinion. I was so amped when I first heard it was coming out and then when i finally saw it, i was sort of disappointed. I expected a lot more mindless violence and killing from the Punisher rather than some clever scheme to turn the bad guys against each other. And i suppose the fact that the execution of his family took place in Tampa Bay rather than New York City sort of bothered me too. Travolta as the villain? The list goes on and on, but that's just me. The fight scene with the Russian was dope though. I did like Jane as the Punisher though. I was REALLY anticipating a sequel cuz i was not too satisfied with the first one and when I heard Jane dropped out, I was more than upset. For the sake of consistency, I would have really liked to see Jane in this film. He had a cool look and he pulled off a pretty sweet voice too. But i don't know, as someone said before, Stevenson's look seems to be following the Bradstreet cover art which is pretty cool i guess. I'll give the next film a world, it will probably be better than the first but it ill suck not to have Jane coming back as the punisher.

oh, and no more explosions that form a skull at the end please. thanks.
  • adam · 1 year ago
as long as they stick with the hardass anti hero look with the leather jacket then i'm cool with it.
  • Pumkin Man · 1 year ago
I saw the trailer. I liked it until I saw the Punisher spinning around on a rope, upside-down and shooting at people. They teach you that at Fort Bragg?
I liked Stevenson's look. He looks angry as hell. That was cool.
I liked him holding on to that M-14, or 16, or whatever it was, and moving down a hall with his eyes always to the sight. That was cool.
I liked that there are finally some guns! And not stupid bow and arrows like in the Jane movie. How many of our boys are holding on to bow and arrows in Iraq?
Let's hear some artillery go off! Bow and arrows indeed. He's killing criminals, not "honouring the fallen prey". They got no honour; shoot'em, already and multiply your productivity!
I didn't see the M-60 in the trailer. My friend said it's there but I didn't see it.
Please. Show me the pig. I love hearing that monster go off.
I liked the Punisher's suit. I believed it. It made more sense wearing body-armor than running around in a cut-off T-shirt. Ummm...what if you get shot? Doesn't that tend to happen in your line of work, Mr Punisher? Wear body-armor! And put the skull over it. Done. Easy. That was cool.
I hope the movie doesn't blow it. The trailer looks great but you know how sometimes...the movie...doesn't measure up to the trailer?
Either way, I can't wait to find out!

I have footage on www.fullmoon316.net on PUNISHER: WAR ZONE, from the footage, it looks likes an NC-17 PUNISHER movie. If you have Nero installed on your PC, it will play (AVI).
  • Sean · 1 year ago
Let's set this straight, everybody complaining about Thomas Jane not being in "Punisher: War Zone" and "how great he was as Punisher" needs to do some research because it is very obvious that they are not true Punisher fans in the sense of its history and genre. I think most of the complainers are too young to know how Punisher should actually be. As some true fans have already expressed: Punisher should be rugged, with a very physically imposing look that's ready to kill with prejudice against criminals, not some dude that's weary and ready for a nap. In this sense, none of the actors that have played Frank Castle so far has been able to capture this look. In my opinion, even Stevenson looks soft!

The first two Punisher (89' and 04') film attempts were so horrible that I lost hope in ever seeing an accurate portrayal of my favorite childhood comic book hero, so to see this third installment of an attempt is thrilling for me but with I'm thrilled with reservations. I don't think anybody will ever get it right unless I directed it. But anyway, it seems this latest portrayal is the most accurate with even Microchip (who's this: look it up) making a appearance.
  • bugs · 1 year ago
That's what I'm talikn' about, Sean. I bet your movie would be pretty good too. Maybe almost as good as mine.
The Dolph movie wasn't great. But when you compare it to Jane's, it's a work of art that rivals the great Da Vinci. That's when you realized that Dolph, despite his "range", could still play a BIG, BAD-ASS, mother-*er. Jane CAN'T, no matter how "buff" he gets. He AIN'T scary. The Punisher is scary. Dolph was mildly scary. Stevenson looks scary. Jane ain't scary. And that's it. Oh, and the fight choreography was 10x better in the Dolph version. Better bad guys too.
The Jane movie was INSULTING on many, MANY different levels. Dolph's wasn't. My opinion.
That being said, the Stevenson one looks particularly vicious. Looks bloody and brutal. Lotsa guns; lotsa explosions. Sprinkled with a little torture? I'm in.
I'm not to excited about seeing Jigsaw, though. The Punisher doesn't HAVE nemesi. He KILLS THEM all. Hello? His enemies don't LIVE LONG ENOUGH to BECOME his nemesi. So for me, the Jigsaw thing is just gonna be goofy. Hope it ain't. But I fear it is.
I don't wanna hear Castle talk to much either unless it's an inner-narrative drenched with black humor the way Ennis does it. No melodrama. No "oaths". No frills. (speaking of Ennis: "The Slavers." Best Punisher I ever read.)
No capes, no masks, no mercy. Remember?
    So thrill me, Ms Alexander.
    Peace.
  • Van Johnson · 1 year ago
****ing great post, Bugs! I couldn't have said it better myself.
I guess that has always been the problem to bring the punisher to the movie screen. He is one-dimensional. Just killing. That's hard to explain to the maerketing dep.! LOL.
The true fans know that its his craziness that makes him interesting. He never has to say a word but when he just gives you his look, you have to change your shorts! I understand exactly what you mean about Thomas Jane not being able to convey that. It ruined the movie. The guy has to be Terror-Incarnate.
And what was the final body count? 10? Dolph had killed that many in the first 5 minutes! Either way, Jane lost more family members at his BBQ than he killed bad guys in the movie. That was so stupid!
Another poster said the same thing earlier. Losing his wife and kids wasn't enough??? Why change that so dramatically? It IS insulting, I agree.
Wake up! We love Frank Castle for what he is, not for the stupid changes YOU WANNA MAKE because you THINK it'll be better.
I also think the Jane movie was EMBARRASSINGLY bad. That being said,I saw the R-rated preview of the War Zone. Oh. My. God. It kicks ass!
  • Tina222 · 1 year ago
Hey bugs. You forgot "If you're guilty, you're dead". That pretty much told me everything I needed to know. My husband is actually the comic freak; if it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be on this page.
I first picked up the Punisher series b/c I liked Ennis on Preacher. But after the first few issues, it seemed that that both Ennis and I had been wasting our time for three years before. Punisher is a much better series than Preacher.
I fell in love with Frank Castle. Not like Painkiller Jane, but for the character. I knew he had been around Marvel for awhile but I was never into gory comic books, or mindless violence.
But I realized that it wasn't mindless. Far from it. I read almost all of the back issues since. The Punisher rules, as the kids say. The most dangerous man to ever walk the earth.
I read "The Slavers," bugs. I agree. The best. When Frank gets his hands on the slavers, you couldn't WAIT for him to get mindlessly violent on them. B/c they had it coming...
The visceral pleasure of punishment far outweighs my abhorrence of violence.
    Thanks for reading!
  • Mac · 1 year ago
I have to agree with the last few posts...we don't want to see Frank's back story, that's the LEAST interesting part, and one reason the Thomas Jane Punisher movie was mediocre at best. At least Lundgren's movie was smart enough to jump in to the meat of the story, but even IT made the mistake of still making it about revenge on the people who killed his family. We want the Punisher who has LONG SINCE buried all those directly responsible for his family, and is still killing away! We want the psychopathic, mass-murdering, serial-killing, MONSTER! We want the Punisher who the bad-guys check their under their bed and in their closet for at night! We want the boogie man who haunts the DREAMS of bad guys, the predator of predators! THAT is the Frank Castle we want....it appears from the trailer that Stevenson's Punisher at least understands that!

I SEEN ALL THE PUNISHER MOVIES AND WELL DOLPH TRIED BUT THE STORY WAS VHS PRODUCT. THOMAS JANE WELL HE DID A GOOD JOB LIKE KURT RUSSELL DI IN ELVIS THE MOVIE. BUT JOHNNY TRAVOLTA WELL SOMEONE LET HIM SLIDE IN THE STUDIO DOORS THAT DID IT FOR ME IT TURNED INTO A B MOVIE THEN...WHY NOT HAVE ADAM WEST SHOW UP? IM ROOTING FOR RAY STEVENSON HE GIVES THE LOOK I HAD IN THE ARMY..NO MERCY. THE MOVIE WILL GET MY MONEY AND EVERYONE ELSE'S. I HOPE THE BEST FOR MR STEVENSON. BUT LETS FACE IT HOLLYWOOD MAKES MOVIES AND SHELVES THEM FASTER THAN PAMPERS MAKES DIAPERS. THE MOVIES MAY BE CRAPPY BUT THE PUBLIC WILL STILL BUY.

I think that Thomas Jane looks like a much better Punisher. This new guy looks way to over the top.
  • Cole Abaius · 1 year ago
If you mean "over the top...tan," then I agree.
  • rkl_3000 · 1 year ago
sigh..... i really think that thomas jane should have stayed as the punisher, he was great in that movie, the way he doesn't show emotions when he kills....
  • wolfebd316 · 1 year ago
I really think Ray is going to do the film justice, he's got that Tim Bradstreet look that we've been wanting to see. I'm glad that Marvel is staying with the R rating because there is no way in hell you can make that character PG-13. The DVD of course will have additional scenes when released. Thomas Jane did a great job as the Punisher and I would 've liked him to stay onboard the project but not all change is bad. I believe Marvel Studios is aiming towards a Marvel Universe film
  • infernus006 · 11 months ago
I just got back from watching the movie, War Zone. And I liked it. I look forward to buying the DVD. I also liked the '04 movie and thought Jane did a decent job at portraying Frank, but I think that Stevenson owns as the Punisher. I think his looks, attitude, and voice are perfect for the role and I was impressed with his talent. So if they make a sequel, I really hope they can get Stevenson to play him again. That said, now I am off to play some Punisher video game before crashing.
  • infernus006 · 11 months ago
Oh, and by the way, if you want to see a better picture of Stevenson as Punisher than this crappy one they posted here, go here: http://www.red-carpet.org/wp-content/uploads/2008...
  • Travis · 10 months ago
I enjoyed Jane as the Punisher and I watch the movie all the time. It was great.
At first, I was distressed that Tom Jane wouldn't be reprising the role in the sequel (back when we all thought it was going to be one), but after finding out Ray Stevenson was going to be stepping into the Frank Castle's body armor, I had high hopes, seeing as I'd been a fan of his after seeing him in Rome and King Arthur.

Having seen Punisher: Warzone on opening day, I can most definitely say that I'm far from disappointed with it.

As for the Jane/Stevenson debate, I'm 50/50 because, in all honesty, I think they're different sides of the same coin. Jane was dark and brooding, more philosophical, if you will, while Stevenson is more direct and in-your-face. And brutal. Oh man, was Stevenson's portrayal of Castle brutal...

*One person's opinion. If anyone reading this doesn't like my opinion, well tough sh!t, because I could really care less.
  • lethal · 7 months ago
just saw the film on the boobtoob; good enough, for a comic book movie. everyone has a fav actor who portrayed their hero/ idol. lundgern was terrible -in anything he did. he did "masters of the universe" for f*ck's sakes! jane did an acceptable job, i guess; how he managed not get killed running around in a t-shirt i'll never know (although he did drive a cool car). stevenson hit the nail on the head: he looks pissed - all the time, which is the way the punisher should look (kinda reminded me of my father-in-law). that angry, haggard, haven't slept in days look was perfect. loved the outfit. loved the way he stalked thru that hotel snipin' bad guys and taking the time to plant another bullet in the ones that were still moving *lol* a very conscientious killer. body armor was cool complete with trademark skull print logo. you could put that suit on anyone and they'd look like a total badass (except segal - he's probably too fat now to fit into it).
the villain "jigsaw"? wtf was that? a little ridiculous if you ask me (not that anyone did). a regular vicious mobster with a healthy hate on for castle would have been enough. and his mental case brother? wasn't he the guy that played the liver eating "tooms" in the x-file series? *lol*
overall, i liked this punisher movie than any of the others. a dark gratuitous violent flik that fit the bill. peace out.

Stevenson rox - THAT'S ALL. He gave the vibe to this movie. Respect for the other actor but he looks more like a 'good college guy".

i agree, i liked the one with tomas jane better mainly because you get more of a feeling that hes the punisher
