Film School Rejects: Fantastic Fest Review: The House of the Devil

Holy shit. I was going through the Fantastic Fest reviews looking for a name of a film I can't remember that I thought I saw was reviewed here and I had no idea this film was reviewed. I agree with everything you stated, but I would have given it a "D". I do not understand why Slashfilm's Hunter Stephenson loves this film so much. I fell into the hype and shelled out $9.99 to watch it on Amazon. I should not have done this. Why is it so boring? Why is the ending so predictable? The film does look great, I'll give it that; it actually looks like it came from the 1980s, but that is it. There's nothing else to like about it. Just like the pizza, it left a horrible taste in my mouth.

I must admit that in principal I agree with Dr Abaius' review although I personally would have given it at least a 'B'. Despite the look and feel of the film perfectly resembling an 80's horror flick, I think that if this was released in the 80's it would have been up with the best of them.
The film benefits from the fantastic acting all round, and yes, it's predictable (you can see that much from the trailer) but it still works, and im my opinion is well worth a watch even if its just for nostalgia sake. The problem that any horror film maker is going to encounter in this day and age is that to shock people you'd have to have actual footage of something grotesque
taking place in real life, and society is not at the point where people en masse, will pay to watch real torture/suffering/murder for entertainment. We have a psychological safety net of knowing 'Its just a film', and unfortunately for horror that is it's undoing.
The House Of The Devil is definitely one of the best true horror films since '...Emily Rose'.
