Film School Rejects: Exclusive Report: DLP Spearheads 3D Development

My big problem will probably still be the glasses. I wear regular glasses, and I can not wear contacts. This almost ALWAYS SUCKS for having to put the 3-D ones over them. Some are actually designed to go over glasses, and those have been okay (but heavy).

I'm still on the fence as to whether the technology will ultimately be a gimmick or not, and here's why: it's fantastic that development is making headway, and equally exciting that DLP will be involved, but it's up to the filmmakers ultimately to use the gift wisely.

People keep saying that Avatar will be a game-changer, but it will take a lot more than one movie to show that an entire medium is more than just objects flying off the screen at the audience.

And shouldn't we be working on a realistic Smell-o-Vision again?

3D entertainment is legitimate. There are multiple value propositions here, and the economics are the underlying momentum that will perpetuate 3D now and in the future: 1. Gives directors another method to tell a story and engage the audience - it's more than gimmicky objects flying off the screen; the opportunity is there to match the emotional feel of the scene to the depth of the image - pulling you into the whole scene or pushing the whole scene out into the theatre, not just little objects; 2. Movie theatres can offer higher quality entertainment- this is the first real solution creating more value in theatrical entertainment in many years; 3. Studios receive a higher return on investment - more revenue per ticket; 4. based on professional technology - the 3D technology used in displaying this entertainment (in theatres or on DLP tv's) has been used by NASA, Boeing, BMW, Mercedes, Pfizer, Caterpillar and numerous other major technology firms for 15+ years, meaning it has been improved, refined and is highly complex. If I were you, I'd be excited that 3D is just beginning and the future will only get better. The new 3D is like color was to a black an white world so many years ago.
